Nice list. A Love Supreme, Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn, Entertainment!, Marquee Moon....I need to find a copy of that one in particular.

I also have Station to Station, definitely one of my favorite Bowie records.

Here's most of what I have....haven't fully completed this list, plus it's missing all of my classical LP's, which range from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring to Beethoven's 9th...

Re: **The Official Vinyl Collectors Thread**

Excellent thread! I've just fallen in love with Vinyl recently (hence the item on the last Podcast), and am already building quite a collection:

Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets
Ben Folds Five - Self-Titled, Whatever and Ever Amen, Reinhold Messner
Radiohead - In Rainbows, OK Computer
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
James Taylor - Sweet Baby James, Mud Slide Slim, Never Die Young, That's Why I'm Here
    Billy Joel - 52nd Street
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way
    Fleetwood Mac - Self-Titled
Wilco - A Ghost is Born
Huey Lewis & the News - Sports
    Chicago - GH and 2 other double-LPs
Robbers on High Street - Tree City (signed!)
Ben Folds - Ben Folds Live
Emily Haines - Knives Don't Have Your Back

I picked up an Ion USB turntable for cheap - works for the time being. There's an old Symphonic Console in my basement that I'm working on restoring.

As for why vinyl sounds better than CDs/mp3's - here's a VERY brief once-over:

Sound is an analog wave. (Remember from physics in high school?). Picture it like a rope held between two people, and one of them snaps it. A vinyl record has a perfect reproduction of that wave, grooved into the record, which the needle rubs over and outputs that sound wave. A digital recording has to take snapshots of that sound wave, and on a CD, that is 44Khz, or 44,100 shots per second of the sound wave. Sounds like a ton, and it is, BUT - what if a snare drum hits JUST in the middle of two of those samples - the digital recording won't accurately reproduce the true sound and you've got distortion. Plus, many CD's released now are victims of the "loudness war" (wikipedia it), so the levels are turned up so high, there's no "depth" to the sound, no little nuances to listen for, no sonic range or dynamics. With a vinyl, you're looking at a pure representation of the original recording, most of the time.

That's a quick once-over and I'm sure it contains technical inaccuracies but that's the basic gist of it.

Bottom line: I love vinyl. I can't wait until DMB releases their entire catalog on it.

yes. and it still sounds awesome, even though most picture discs lose some quality.

So do you open yours up and listen to them then? I love music and I like to collect things so this sounds like something I would like doing. Just not sure if I should leave them packaged like a Star Wars figurine collector would or actually use them.

I have an OOP LP that I was planning on just keeping wrapped, but I asked the guys over at ts if I should keep them wrapped up or crack it open and listen. The response I got was: "Open and listen, no fun in collecting to appreciate in value, you buy stocks for that...."

Yeah, I just picked up that Lateralus the other day. It was just sitting in the record store on the 'new releases' shelf, and I was all like , then bought it.

Re: **The Official Vinyl Collectors Thread**

I got into the vinyl collecting world just after the 1st of the year. Had been wanting to...but never made the leap. Purchased a simple sony $100 turntable and connected to my home system.

why did I get into it?
sound, collecting, the understanding that vinyls are made to last. also, i knew that the "album" experience is inevitable. The method of listening to music really promotes listening to the entire album. And that is the only problem that I have with itunes and the direction music is headed. there is something special about listening to an album the way it was recorded (both in its entirety and in its sound quality). even further - not only listening to an "album" but also going to your local record shop. used, new, rarities...the search and persue is enjoyable.

    what have I learned?
there is a lot of interest and availability. could help that i relocated to Chicago and there are record shops a plenty. but there is so much more i could get into as far as sound, collections, etc...with a lot of $$ to throw around i guess. right now i am just enjoying listening and searching.

Oh - and to address the "should I buy a turntable that converts to MP3?" I would say that this kind of defeats the purpose. I guess I do not know the quality you can get out of these, but understand that when you buy music you may want it avail on you iPod or elsewhere. A lot of vinyl albums these days include either a cd or code for digital download of the entire album. something to consider. I think of the music i have purchased, roughly 30% has included the music in another form for free (Rilo Kiley, Jose Gonzalez, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses).

Yeah - as long as you take good care of them, you can still "show them off" in near mint quality and still get use out of them. They sound fantastic new, too.

Those coupons are a great idea; however...they may only be for 128kbps MP3 files, which suck, especially compared to vinyl. With a USB turntable, you can rip audio at an uncompressed rate, and then convert it to whichever format you like, so you save quality that way.

Most of the ones I have recieved have been 320 kbps (Ratatat-Classics, Spoon-Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Built To Spill-Made Up Dreams, etc.) and some have been actual CD's...either way, it's just too good of a deal to pass up.

This is the one I have:
http://www.ion-audio.com/ionttusb05 - picked it up for $60 off craigslist - it's brand new. They have them for $80 refurb or $100 new.

    http://www.ion-audio.com/ionttusb
This one is a little more advanced - $90 refurb.

I'm not sure how ION is perceived in the audio world, but for a starter turntable, I love mine.

If you are looking for a nice turntable, check out VPI.

But, you've got to see it as an investment.

VPI may be a bit above what he wants to pay

but kenny, I would check out the pros and cons of USB and regular turntables...and you should be prepared to spend at least over $250 if you want a lasting, solid performing piece of equipment...if you can spare it I would look for one in the $500 to $750 price range

thanks, everyone, for the "new vinyl" tips. I only have one store in my area that I know of which sells records....and the only new stuff they have is like hardcore rap. Which, actually, is somewhat weird because the record store is really good about indie stuff and things pretty much the OPPOSITE of hardcore rap.
