Home Repair/Remodel Thread

I didn't see a thread on this topic so I figured I would make one.

My house flooded last week and was virtually gutted this week so I'm having to start all over.

One thing I want to do is no longer have carpet. I like the laminate floors and I've heard about LVT flooring, which is like laminate, looks like wood, but is waterproof. Anyone have LVT or any suggestions on non-carpet flooring that is waterproof/water resistant?

This is LVT for those who haven't heard of it:

    get the wood looking tile.

yeah, more expensive but it's a selling point as well. it's also nice in bathroom/showers and as an accent wall in a dining room.

that said, i wouldn't advise NO carpet. leave the carpet in your bedrooms. it dampens sound and just makes for a much more comfy situation.

I'm in the middle of building a desk. It's slightly imperfect, but it's a long project I plan to keep building for years to come (eventually building a computer into the desk surface encased in glass) and it's rewarding as fuck.

I would say no carpet at all. Especially if anyone in the house has allergies.

And yea the wood looking tile.

This. I work in an architecture firm in Boston, so it may be an North East thing, but none of our clients want carpet. LVT and engineered wood are the two most common applications

I'm seeing this wood tile everywhere but I feel like it's too trendy and that it'll go the way of all-wood paneling in rooms in 5-10 years. Not my asthetic at all.

Our basement also flooded last night. We just moved in a week ago tomorrow. We're going to have to address whatever issue is causing water to get into the basement first. Probably going to just tear out the carpet and padding and leave it concrete until we can ensure that no water will get back down there. We weren't planning on remodeling the basement for a few years anyways so the concrete down there won't bother me. This new water problem is going to delay me being able to build my new deck until next summer probably

I installed a Nest learning thermostat today and now the a.c. is blowing hot air. I'm pretty sure I wired it correctly but maybe not. Anyone have any advice?

My dad and I installed recessed lighting in the kitchen last summer, but we used to have soffits that we removed so we were able to leave the rest of the ceiling intact and we just put new sheetrock up where the soffits were and cut out the holes for the lighting fixtures.

The house we bought has hard wired smoke detectors which honestly seems like a pain in the ass when it comes time to replace them

It's not terribly difficult. No harder than replacing a light fixture. But it's still more of a pain in the ass than it needs to be. Just make sure you turn off the correct breakers or it'll be a pain in a lot more than your ass.

lol yeah I just watched a YouTube video. They were just installed in August so I should have a good amount of time before I need to replace them

    Re: Home Repair/Remodel Thread

Went through a big master bed, bath, and closet remodel last year. So glad that's behind us. We had to live in the guest room for three months.

What was cool was how we designed it all ourselves, from a little bit of CAD work I did at the office and ultimately actually on my phone (where I came up with the final layout). And my wife was key in a lot of the finishing touches like all the colors, tiles, fixtures. So much went into it.

Luckily that's the last big thing we'll have to do like that with this house. Got our first kid on the way so there's a spare room to be painted and decorated but that's about it.

The "remodel" after a pipe burst was the most miserable three months of my homeowner life.

Yeah, water damage is no joke.

But, I basically was forced into doing the remodel I wanted to do eventually anyway, I just did it in a few months instead of over time.

Just finished building a big storage shed in the backyard. Finishing up my privacy fence next week.

So it’s been almost 11 months since we moved into our new house. Our basement flooded five days after we moved in as I posted above. Today will likely be my last day of working down there touching up some paint around the trim and baseboards. What a feeling! My dad and I did basically all the work, save for plumbing and electric. I’ll try to put together some before and after pics later today and post them in here. Pretty damn proud of what we were able to accomplish.

Look into retrofit LED lighting. Just bought a house and installed these. Wicked simple and they look awesome. I can try and post pictures if you want?

That sucks. Within a month or two after moving into our house we discovered a leak in the guest room ceiling. Was right below where the roof meets the chimney. We knew there was an issue up there after our inspection and the previous owner was supposed to fix it, but we think she just had some schmuck throw a bunch of tar on it and make up a bullshit invoice.

Had to get the roof fixed for $600 and my father in law and I replaced the whole ceiling. Wife and I repainted the whole room. Fun start to first time homeownership.

As a pro flooring installer, I see the flood damage all the time. It does not discriminate in home price either. I see the $5m lake homes get flood just like the trailer houses. Heck, I just got done putting sheetrock up in my basement closet because we had master bath leak that was in the shower drain so it was super slow going until we noticed that it smelled musty in that room. Frick.

They told me the LVT I installed was waterproof, so next time we flood I won't have to replace my flooring. So I had it installed through the whole house.

The only thing you’d have to worry about it drying out the substrate that gets wet. But yes LVT won’t need replacing.

If you had it glued down the water may affect that but should be too damaging

That is correct. If you take it apart carefully an use a piece of blue tape to write which cut pieces came from which row then it should go back just fine. The stuff with the cork backing can mold pretty easily so it’s more important to lay the planks cork side up and let them dry asap.

Good lord. Is there anything more frustrating than electric? Maybe plumbing? Not even kidding...I just spent three hours replacing two regular outlets with GFCI outlets. I don't even understand how that's possible.
