**Ants Top Films of 2019 and of the Decade (Due Feb. 7 and March 1)**

We’ve discussed this on-and-off in the movie thread, but I tend to hold off on creating the annual voting thread until the week before Christmas. As noted in the thread title, we’ll also be voting for our favorites of the decade just a few short weeks after the 2019 results are posted. This marks the first time we’re doing two separate polls so close together, so please bear with me. The only thing I’m certain of at this point is that the best of the decade submissions will be due on Sunday, March 1, 2020.

As for the 2019 voting, the rules are the same as always. Feel free to use this thread to discuss what you liked, what you didn’t like, what you’re most looking forward to seeing, etc.

1) Final submissions are due by midnight EST on February 7, 2020. Results will be announced before the Academy Awards broadcast on February 9, 2020.

2) Votes should be PMed to me here on Ants. Please remember to number your lists in order to simplify things.

3) Lists are capped at 50, with a minimum of 10 entries necessary to be scored.

4) As a general rule of thumb, a theatrical release is eligible if it was designated as a limited release in the United States in 2019. Films that only had festival screenings and no accompanying theatrical release are not similarly eligible. Documentary features are eligible, as are television movies. Miniseries are not. If there are any other questions regarding eligibility, please feel free to ask.

5) Since final submissions are not due for nearly two months, a “secret ballot” rule is almost unenforceable. I love the spirit behind it though and would ask that as the deadline gets closer, people use their best judgment and stop posting preliminary lists. We don’t want to needlessly ruin the suspense of the final results. I won’t bring this up again unless I see it being a problem in the weeks leading up to the deadline.

As a frame of reference, here are the top 10 lists for the last ten years:
2009 – WINNER: Moon
2010 – WINNER: Black Swan
2011 – WINNER: Drive
2012 – WINNER: Silver Linings Playbook
2013 – WINNER: 12 Years a Slave
2014 – WINNER: Gone Girl
2015 – WINNER: Room
2016 – WINNER: La La Land
2017 – WINNER: Logan
2018 – WINNER: BlacKkKlansman

I can't wait to participate this year. I still have at least 10 movies or so I need to see from this year, and a few more from the decade that I've missed. Starting a letterboxd account will definitely help me keep up with everything going forward.

What is Twin Peaks: The Return for the decade list? It’s being named best tv show of the decade most places, and best film in others.

Yeah, that's a tough call. I know we counted it as a film in its release year, but I personally didn't believe it was one then and I don't believe it is now.

okay I was about to come in here to make a joke that the over/under on amount of people giving The Social Network as their #1 answer was 4.5... now I'm shocked to see that it didn't even win its individual year. Black Swan won in 2010?? I literally would've bet very real cash that Social Network had won out at the time. It seems like people still refer to it often in the general movie thread as one of their best of the decade.

Yeah, there’s absolutely no way Black Swan will outrank Social Network for the decade list.

Opinions change over 9 years. I can't specifically recall where The Social Network ranked for me in 2010, but I know it wasn't my #1. It might not have even cracked my top 5.

But it's been my favorite film of the decade for years now. Time has only made it better.

So, Toei Animation are assholes and technically released Dragon Ball Super: Broly in Japan in 2018. We got it in Jan of 19. Can I use it for this year, or do I just have to overrank it on the decade list?

Looks like the only US screening in 2018 was the LA premiere, which I'm sure none of us had the credentials to attend. The January 2019 U.S. public release is what we'll go by, so it counts for this year.

I really want to get a jump on this but it's hard when some great stuff (1917, Parasite, Just Mercy, etc.) is still in limited release and won't be available for me to watch for a minute. Not living near a large metro area sucks when it comes to seeing films when they first come out.

We're all pretty much in the same boat with the bolded. Neither of them gets a wide release until January 10th.

I think I might limit my list to 20 this year. Or not include anything below a 3.5. Is that better or worse for the rankings in the end? I know participation has gone down each year.

It'll likely only make a minimal difference. Once you get that deep, the only real impact it will have is to affect a film's overall average placement. That's not a crushing blow, though. We'll also probably see fewer films qualify overall seeing as how as you're one of the few who consistently submits a lengthier list.

Minimum will be 10. Haven't decided on the maximum yet, though. It'll either be 50 or 100, probably the latter.

Best of the Decade voting tidbits:

    1) Final submissions are due by midnight EST on Sunday, March 1, 2020.

    2) Votes should be PMed to me here on Ants. Please remember to number your lists in order to simplify things.

    3) Lists are capped at 100, with a minimum of 10 entries necessary to be scored.

Please feel free to post questions regarding a film's eligibility.

Three lists have been submitted in the last couple of days. I'll soon be sending out PMs to our regular contributors to further remind them of the Friday night/Saturday morning deadline.

I posted in the movie thread but you'll have my list Friday. I have Waves and JoJo Rabbit left to watch then I'm done. I'm not going to be able to see 1917 before lists are due.

Just sent in my list. I'll send a list of the other categories later.

Would El Camino be eligible? I personally saw it in a theater so it definitely had a super limited theatrical run.
