Doesn't really bother me. A lot of lyrics look stupid when they're typed up.

Man, I think Bismarck is pretty solid. There's been some discussion about it pulling loosely from some old short story/article that gives it quite a bit of depth--(can't find the original post of that). And more talk about implicit references to the heroin epidemic in the US. That song has some teeth, and a pretty little chorus, to boot

Had a friend that went to the Florida show on Tuesday. He texted me letting me know a group behind him was wondering when the rest of the band was going to join Dave and Tim on stage. When the main set ended they all thought now was the time for a full band set. So thinking logically about that, these people thought Dave & Tim who have just played for a good 2 1/2 hours if not more, were then going to be joined for another full 2 hour plus set with the rest of the band.... Not even factoring in that it was 11pm at night.

Yea, those lines are in the same vein as this bit from Ants:

He wakes up in the morning
Does his teeth, bite to eat
    And he's rolling

That, typed out plainly, looks worse than the quoted bit from Bismarck.

I think Bismarck is a good song.

No, that's actually bad, even in context and with the music.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. In fact, I figured this would be the most common "stupid things heard at a show" for 2017. I can only imagine how many people think they're going to see the full band. I would assume a majority of that population is people that were offered a ticket to see Dave and they automatically assume the whole band will be there.

As for Bismarck's lyrics, I think that song is Dave in his element, as is Black and Bluebird (regardless of all the hate). THAT is the Dave we all knew and loved back in the 90s. The playful storyteller that manages to tell a story while weaving the words into a fun rhythmic cadence, which in turn the band is able to play to. Bismarck is a great new tune. I would be thrilled to see that make the next album, and maybe even become a single. I think a single like that and Samurai Cop could make for a possible "come back" for DMB.

Let me get this straight. You will give someone the stare of death because they are excited that 41 came on? You automatically assume that they only know hits?

My gf from years ago knew pretty much every single DMB song and it wasn't until her 7th or 8th show that she actually heard 41 (mind you, the mansfield show with Victor Wooten, damn)... what if this was the first time these fans were hearing 41 by D&T? Worthy of excitement? I think so. The first and only time i saw D&T I didn't get to see 41 and Two Step. Bet your ass i will be excited about it come SPAC.

Just be positive man. No need to look down on people or make negative assumptions, or be passive aggressive with a stupid stare of death. Man up and say something if your neighbors are truly being disruptive. Regardless of age or tenure, everyone always started somewhere. Don't be that elitist who thing other people are less deserving to be at a show. Its a pretty dick move is you ask me. If fans like that pissed me off, I'd stay home where I belong.

I really like these lyrics. They're a couple of vagabonds. I'm not sure it matters much, but the shower is AT the truck stop, so in my head you've added a comma in there. It's a "truck stop shower", they grab what little they can afford and move along to sing and pan handle for money somewhere else.

Anyway, even if there's nothing special about these lyrics, there's also nothing offensively wrong with them, IMO.

It dawned on me this morning that I might hear the "oh dave oh dave oh dave oh dave" (to the tune of "ole, ole, ole") tonight at The Mann since that's usually chanted at Camden.

Well said. There is far too much "elitist fan" attitudes on these boards. "You like Cornbread? What a joke". "You think that set looked good?
I guess standards have fallen to an all time low". "You're excited to see a song you've never seen? (insert eye roll) I've seen it 28 times". Get over yourselves. It's music. It's meant for people's enjoyment.

Was at the jack Johnson concert in Chicago last night. Guy next to me saw my DMB hat and went on a 5 minute tangent about how "Jeff Crawford" was better than LeRoi at playing the sax.

It's your own fault when you get sick of songs like Jimi and Cornbread but every single year has its share of songs that go on a 2-3 year stint. I get it. But lets call a spade a spade. The chorus of Cornbread ERUPTS through every single venue, more than most songs in the line up. Everyone is singing it and you can't deny it. One of 3 scenarios occur for these assholes:

    1. Elitists are sulking, which i'd love to witness
    2. Elitists are singing along because they know its a great song with amazing energy when played live, two faced pansies.
    3. Elitists scurry to the bathroom and post on Ants to bitch about it lol.

The way I see it, most DMB fans are modern day hippies. Everyone is careless, they are there to have a good time, let their hair down, and enjoy a great performance regardless of their knowledge of every single song. If you are going there to be critical of the band, stay home please. Someone else will enjoy that ticket a lot more.

That 41 was amazing when Dave's intro explained how "lets go boston" to him sounded like "victor wooten." Plus they did the Sojourn interpolation, my ultimate favorite. I was super excited... if i ever saw someone giving me the death stare i'd make sure they had an appointment with their dentist the next day. Stay home you miserable fuck lol

I just gave it a listen again and the chant was "Let's go Bruins" since the B's were playing Chicago in the cup. They had won the night before in OT an Dave ended up saying "Double over time, shit. Nobody needs that kind of tension!" Then goes into the chant sounding like Victor Wooten.

Video for those who are interested in what we are talking about!

Its not as much being tired of jimi and cornbread is as its just a large group of sub-par songs that fill up sets consistently year after year when great songs sit on the shelf for years and years at a time. There isnt enough overhaul year to year anymore.

Just look at this D&T tour. D&T used to be a place where experimentation and rare songs lived... now these shows look like a full band set. It doesnt mean theyre bad, its just, well Ive already seen this show a bunch of times, why go out of my way to see more? Dave is just complacent and not driven to be that creative anymore.

Its okay to point that out. I still enjoy going to shows, but the way things have trended the last few years makes me want to go to far less of them. Surprises of any kind are just non-existent anymore, and thats really disappointing, because it was one of the things that made going to DM shows of any kind so much fun.

Completely understood and you bring up logical points. Sub-par songs are subjective to everyone so its very easy to grasp the fact that the older crowd who were hooked in the 90's don't share the same affinity as newcomers that probably like the newer stuff and don't know to appreciate the older stuff. In addition when you look at his older stuff, all of the songs were great but there were still similar opinions and when you think about it, a lot less songs to choose from compared to today.

I'm an optimist. The shows are still very energetic (for the most part) so for a band that can pull this level of performance and entertainment after 27 years, i couldn't care less what the setlist is like. I remember years ago being disappointed about not hearing rare songs that i've been chasing for a while. Then it clicked one day. I decided not to give a shit and thats when I started enjoying the shows as much as my first several shows I went to.

I mean I dont go into shows with expectations and never have, but its still kind of lame when you see essentially the same show in back to back years with a few songs swapped out for generally less quality songs.

I dont get disappointed when a set doesnt have a rare song, but I get disappointed when a set I see it lacks classic great songs that have been or should be in play when I see cornbread and y&m for the 10th time out of my last 13 shows. Thats where the disdain comes from. Just throw us a bone here and there, you shouldnt have to trek to a special venue to get it, but thats how things are.

Yet again, well said. Every time I hear a live version of Cornbread or see it in person the crowd is going nuts (9/13/15 is superb by the way). Same with Jimi Thing. All anyone was doing when we walked out of N2 at the Gorge was "Sexy mother fucka shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass!" Not sure how you can see that and not have a blast. Funny thing is that I've been one of those complainers about Jimi Thing (I rarely complain about much when it comes to DMB), but every time I see it I have a great time. There's always songs that I may have seen or heard too many times, but what do you expect after 30 shows and years of listening to tapes and live releases? So I choose to roll with whatever they throw at me and enjoy the show.

Best approach to take Be positive and make the best out of it, they've well surpassed the typical shelf life of touring bands, every show is a blessing at this point so to me, there is zero room for any negativity or criticizing.

With all this being said, there are some stupid things said and done at shows. I don't pay much attention to what people are saying and if they say something incorrect about the band, chances are they are probably just mistaken and (thanks to alcohol) outspoken, so things like that I rarely pick up on, let alone discuss on a forum.

I have however come across many interesting individuals and met a lot of people who were legit from outer space with some of the shit coming out of their mouths. Always up for a good laugh a couple times a night with the folks I run into.
