I guess I just don't get the mental road block that you guys set up in your head with lyrics. They've never detached me from loving a song.

For me, 27 is a good song that I have no desire to listen to. If that makes sense.

I kinda like the lyrics, even though they suck. They just work with the song. I think the studio version is one of the few listenable moments on that disc, but it's far better live for sure. A guilty pleasure of mine I guess.

ED (I actually rather enjoy a fair portion of this album):

    Angel
    Mother Father (loathe it)
    IIHIA
    Sleep to Dream Her
WTWE (I dont hate hate hate this song, I just dont really like it )

All of those tunes have very uninteresting music to go along with the lame ass lyrics.

    Stand Up:

Dreamgirl (people defend this songs music alot, but I find it uninteresting)
    Everybody Wake Up
    HFTGL
    OOMH
    Smooth Rider
    Stand Up
    SAWG
Stolen Away (dont realllly hate this one either)

All of those tunes have lame uninteresting music behind the lame lyrics.

Write a Song has good music and I really don't think the lyrics in it are as bad as the tunes mentioned above, just a little bit cheesy but definately not horrid.

Little Red Bird has a Beatles feel to it for me, and I think the lyrics are actually rather good and creative. The guitar riff is neat, I actually like the lyrics more than the music to this one, but they both fit each other very well.

Beach Ball has decent lyrics save the first verse. nothing groundbreaking but I think it's lyrics are better or at least on par with most of the tunes mentioned above and the music is kinda cool, I just like Dave's guitar in this one more than anything. the horns are okay as well. Probably my least favorite new tune however.

#27 has always been a favorite of mine since it was written.

And it's not that they are not a big deal to me, I love it when Dave writes shit that makes my head spin and lyrics are actually the first thing I pick up on, even before the music. BUT if he doesnt have groundbreaking lyrics to a tune with great music then I am not going to completely disregard the song.

It's not really a mental road block, I was really looking forward to Write A Song based on the clip. I start listening to the song and think this is not bad, then the cheese "wanna write a song to get you hiiiighh, look at you now.. flyyyy" hits. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

Apples and oranges if I am being honest. Big Whiskey is a good DMB album. Everyday is a good pop album. I can tell much more work has been put into Big Whiskey, but I am not sure if it will have the lasting appeal of Everyday for me. I fairly frequently listen to 3/4th of the Everyday album 8 years later, I hope I will have the desire to listen to that much of Big Whiskey 8 years later.

Can you explain why you like it because I listened to it the other day and couldn't stand it? I get were you coming from though because I love Busted Stuff as much as the big 3. It just is a personal cd for me.

I don't love it as much as the big 3, but a lot of the songs just work for me. For example, I think I Did It is a very cool little song. I love Dave's smartass delivery of the lyrics, I like the riff, I like Boyd's "rapping" part. With WTWE, I absolutely love the groove, I love the keyboard fills (they shouldn't even bother playing this without Butch, he makes it), and once again I like Dave's delivery of the lyrics. I will say I dispised pretty much everything about Everyday for a good year to year and a half before it started to grow on me. It was one of those records that even though I didn't like it at first, something about it made me want to keep listening to it.

Cool deal. Not my favorite, but I'm glad you like it. Do you think it is better than Busted Stuff? I'm only asking to see what others think about this cd because I think it phenomenal. I absolutely love every track on it except Kit Kat Jam.

I'm in the minority with a lot of the people here in that I don't go crazy about the Lillywhites and Busted Stuff. I absolutely adore JTR (it's my favorite DMB tune actually), but the mood is so dreary on those albums for the most part, it doesn't bring me any joy in listening to them. I really like some of the darker music this band has done, but the dreary/morbid (IMO) stuff like Big Eyed Fish is not appealing to me. I realize Dave was in a dark place at the time and he was letting out exactly what he was feeling, I just have no desire to hear it. I readily admit that it's excellent art, it's just not for me.

I see what you mean. I like real depressing music (Kevin Devine and Counting Crows), but I am happy person. Strange

really? you think this album is just average? wow, you've never said anything like that before regarding big whiskey!

in every big whiskey discussion, you will inevitably pop in and denounce the album to the point where it's become quite pathetic. you don't like the album? stop partaking in discussions. instead you throw around your opinion like it's fact and ruin other people's enjoyable conversations. go make a "pig" or "minarets" thread. i'm tired of seeing your name and negative comments when i'm reading. it's annoying. even mistreated lewis isn't this bad.

what are your favorite songs besides your obsession with pre-2000 dmb? or is that all you listen to?
