All of my evidence is anecdotal, but I'm leaning toward ... possibly?
Some albums were delayed. Adele is a big one I can think of. It was due for a September release and I think it's been shoved off indefinitely. It seems like a lot of artists don't want to put something out when they can't hit the road to support it. (Although Adele also said she's done with touring, so who knows the calculation there.)
But then you have artists like Fiona Apple who were like, hey, everyone is sitting around at home right now, so it's actually a the perfect time to release a record
Or folks like Taylor Swift, Charli XCX or McCartney who decided that since they had all this free time that they would come up with new stuff
So my total suspicion is that there probably were fewer big-name releases because they want to secure the bag, but that opened the window to other releases that may never have happened. I can't imagine we get Folklore and Evermore if Taylor spent 2020 on the road supporting Lover, for example.
