Now that the tour dates have been announced for Summer 2018, what are your thoughts on if Butch Taylor were to rejoin the band?

They don't need more instruments on stage.

With the wall of sound that the band has become they do not need an additional instrument adding to it. Anyone that thinks Butch would help bring back an older "jazzier" sound is absolutely fooling themselves. The Charlottesville show proved that. It would still sound like current DMB with an additional instrument.

Would LOVE Butch to come back. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Carlos Malta joined them full time.

Or, it'd sound exactly like current DMB and you wouldn't even be able to hear that extra instrument 99% of the time.

Would love Butch back. I think it would add a lot and could be good for the band. I don't think he will be back, but I would love for him to play with them this year!

The whole story behind how he even came into the mix for the Charlottesville show leads me to believe the band has, and had, no plans to work with him again. If I remember correctly, someone on Ants met him at Dave's winery a day or two before the show and he mentioned that he contacted Dave to get involved. They showed him in a wide view, but not once did the camera focus on him. You'd think after 10 years of him being absent from the stage that Dave would at least say something along the lines of "it's been a while, but over here we have an old friend on keys...please welcome Mr. Butch Taylor!" Instead Dave quickly dropped his name and moved on. Maybe he pops up at a show or two, but I feel pretty confident he'll never make a full return.

Obviously in the minority but I would be just fine if Butch never hit the stage with the band again.

I think some people think that if they brought Butch back he would come equipped with a magic wand that reverts DMB back to the year 2004. If that were the case, then yes, sign me up, but he wouldn't. He'd just add to the already muddy sound. It would be cool to see him make a few guest spots on songs that would highlight his playing, and that may still be in the cards, but I don't see them doing anything beyond that.

His departure is one of those stories that I've always wanted to hear. I've heard maybe one or two rumors, but would be curious to know the full story.

If we could get the Butch from the earlier years where he mainly played fills and rounded out the sound, I'd love for him to come back.

If it's later year Butch with 10 minute keyboard solos during Two Step, I want him to stay far away.

Yea, agreed. It's a moot point. No mention of him returning in the tour announcement today sort of puts an end to this discussion as well.

I'd definitely like to see him come back, but maybe dial back his roll to what it was in the earlier years, as others have previously stated. Once Butch started doing scat singing solos during Jimi Thing, in addition to 10 minute solos in LIOG and Two Step, it was time for him to go. Why did he quit originally, anyway? Or was he fired?

I kinda like that Dave didn't make a big deal about his return in C'ville. Just "Butch Taylor on the keyboards!", like he never left. That alone has me a little bit optimistic that he'll show up occasionally. I think if he were properly utilized, he'd help round out the sound very well, and maybe give Tim cause to tone it down a little. Hoping to see Butch again this summer.

IIRC during the Charlottesville show, when Dave introduced the band, he introduced Butch in no different way than anyone else. It would’ve seemed like he had never left. This leads me to believe that there’s a decent chance of him sticking around for the tour.

I wouldn't mind handing Tim acoustic instead of electric and turning up Boyd, but I would personally hate to see RR go. Always loved him and what he brings. Also, would love to hear Boyd do the Violin part in the middle of Belly Belly Nice. I have a feeling he would kill it live
