Deer Creek N1 in 2013. Could have been frustrated at plenty of shows before this (Like Alpine 2009) but I was still in my honeymoon period with DMB, so they could of course do no wrong.

That night at deer creek I just remember walking out thinking "C-". Show just totally lacked flow and consistency.

Re: The first time you were frustrated

This sounds completely ridiculous in retrospect, but the very first pang of frustration I felt was my fifth show, 6.16.97. The show started like this:

    Dancing Nancies
    Two Step
    Help Myself
    Tripping Billies
    Jimi Thing
    Crash Into Me w/ Bela
    Minarets w/ Bela
    Typical Situation w/Bela
    True Reflections
    #41 w/ Bela and Jeff
    Ants Marching w/ Bela
    Say Goodbye

Up to that point in the show I was ready to call it the greatest show I'd ever seen. But then it ended with:

    So Much to Say
    Anyone Seen the Bridge
    Too Much
    ----
    Leave Me Praying
    Drive in Drive Out

Funny thing is, those songs would all be welcome today! But in '97, these songs were the Shake Me's/ If Only's of the day.

I always wonder what the hell happened in 2006 that caused that tour to go to shit in such an epic fashion.

I saw both Camden shows which were absolutely fucking incredible.. Night 2 had the greatest run I've ever seen this band play, a few days later I went to Scranton which had an awesome set with my first Last Stop, an awesome GIG, Lover Lay Down and a sick LIOG (Granted, the Can't Stop > Bayou encore was beyond horrific, but I left as soon as I heard Can't Stop starting up).

After that I caught both Randalls Island shows which I thought were awesome as well, but holy shit it's like right after that they jumped off a cliff. Some of the worst sets I've seen in a non album touring year.

6/25/08 in Mansfield was frustrating because it was only 15 songs with an encore of Sister and Thank You (last song I saw Roi play). Decent set on paper but short and rough encore. Mansfield has a strict curfew I believe.

I was thinking the same thing, thats one of my favorite shows i went to and to listen to. Sister was really the only dud for me. Granny was supposed to open but some lady had a stupid light up fish sign for big eyed fish and they flipped it.

One of my favorite shows ever. Literally only one song I don't like. How u could give a show that had BEF, Granny, Joyride, Idea Of You, #41, Captain, So Much> Too Much, Recently, Crash Into Me, LIOG, Grey Street, BOWA, and Ants a C- is beyond me. Especially in 2013. I personally like BBN, Rooftop, The Riff, and Squirm too but I know not everyone does. Sister was the only dud for me and that's an E1 Dave Solo so who cares.

6.23.99 at Deer Creek night 2 when I saw Lie In Our Graves for the 11th time in 13 shows, repeated from the night before and a bunch of other stuff played at Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Columbus and Cincy, when they were playing many songs I had never seen before throughout the tour that I missed at all mine. Fortunately I got almost everything I was looking for the next night at 6.24.99, a show experience that cemented me as a lifer.

To me it's absurd to complain about anything before 2001. There were times between 01-04 where you could say a thing here or there but before that there's no reason to whine.

They asked when was the first time you were frustrated. I was frustrated one night in 1999. It's a point a time question. Setlist rotation back then was way worse than it would ever be later. They were playing 50 - 60 songs in 1999. Seeing any repeat from the night before on a three night stand, not even night 3, was reason to be frustrated. You're talking about hindsight, which I agree with. But in 1999, I couldn't see in the future. Therefore, my answer is totally valid.

That show was a mess, it felt like it was about to get good then it crashed time and again. But that was just disappointing.

My real frustration was with Dallas just last year. First, we got Lie in Our Graves with no reprise. When they didn't play it during the song I thought they'd go back to it in the second set or something. Nope, just fucked us out of it. Then we got 7 repeats from the night before in The Woodlands, including 2 of the same acoustic songs, and they changed the encore from Warehouse: Grey Street to Sister: Watchtower, which closed the show the night before.

I was legitimately mad leaving the show.

My point stands for everyone, though. It's no less true for anyone else saying anything pre-2001 as it is for me. The question was when were you first frustrated, not when should you have been based on events that occurred later.

I'd say most of us are. But a lot of fans were frustrated for one reason or another in the late '90's. Hell, some people from the early days were frustrated in 1994 because they didn't like how UTTAD sounded. Seems absurd today, but there you go.

I am sort of with you on this. There have been times where I get annoyed that I have to hear Seven or Cornbread for the 1,000th time, but nothing stands out to the point where i get frustrated. It's not like I'm having a bad round of golf.

    1. The general OP question is a subjective one. If someone was disappointed with a show like 6/29/13 or 7/10/04, then they're not wrong. They're right for themselves if they feel like they were frustrated.

    2. Hindsight 20/20 is the wrong way to approach this question. Yes, looking back, we can objectively judge the band in a variety of ways. But if you saw 30 shows in 1996, and were personally sick of Two Step or Crash, then you have every right to be frustrated about it at that time.

For me, I saw 3 shows in 2005 and was not disappointed by anything at the time. I was still a pretty new fan and was happy to see my favorite band play basically anything. Today I would skip a majority of what I heard in 2005, but back then, I loved it.

Ironically, I was bummed after 6/23/06 for personal reasons at that time. Today I would LOVE that show!

This show was amazing but the only reason I left frustrated was because it was my 6th show and at that point I had 3 What You Are show closers and 2 Watchtower show closers only. The encore was a one song Watchtower (my second time in a row getting that as an encore) and that left me a bit frustrated walking out.

I remember thinking about what an amazing show it was and that I shouldn't care but it was the first time I ever didn't leave on a perfect high.

if I'm being totally honest, it was my first show: 12.4.98. Show was solid and they closed with:

    ______
    Christmas Song
    Crash

like others have said, it's not that I didn't enjoy myself, but the set had so much energy you couldn't help but scratch your head at the encore.

After seeing the band for years with decent to poor seats, i finally scored a pit ticket. Got to the venue at 3 PM with other WH and Ants members. i got to about 2 or 3 people deep right behind Dave, made some cool new friends, and thought this was going to be the best show i've seen considering my proximity to the stage. Edward Sharp was awesome, and i got so stoked when the house lights went down. And then this happened....

The first time I heard I did it. I remember thinking "ugh, what the fuck is that?" Then hearing the rest of the album, you knew shit was changing. Really has only gradually gotten worse since then. Thankfully, I've lowered my standards enough I can still enjoy a show, but I know I'm never going to be blown away by the music again.
