I moved from MN to southern Oregon, (Ashland- which I guess is the setting for Coraline the movie, but not the book. I liked the book much more)

It was about 2000 miles with a 2 cats and a dog, and no children. fit the whole house in 26 foot Uhaul. It was about a year long planning process, and we were fortunate enough to find jobs here. We moved out of the midwest for a couple of reasons:
1) the weather (too cold in the winter, limiting outdoor activities, no ocean or mountains)
2) we (my wife and I) were up for something new, a challenge. I never planned on living my whole life 200 miles or less from where I grew up. we have vacationed out here 7 of the past 8 years (pacific northwest) and we had fallen in love with the area, it was a no-brainer, but a long shot.
3) west coast laid back/smoke friendly/like-minded people i guess we have been here 3 weeks and I feel at home, no regrets

Wow Jay. Awesome story. I am very jealous. To just pack up and move like that! I finish grad school in 2012 and would love to pack up and go. North (Maine or Vermont) has always been my ideal destination. I am in the healthcare setting so I guess ill see what the next 2 years brings. I know healthcare in the Pittsburgh area is quite unstable right now.

My husband doesn't want to move to far from him mom. And we have kids so that complicates the situation a bit.

But kudos to you and your wife!!

Vermont is beautiful and soooooo green! well, you are in the right job field because my guess is by the time you are done with grad school, you can choose where you want to live because healthcare will be in looking for lots of folks.

I understand the family situation, and honestly I don't know if we would've moved if we had children. sometimes you gotta take chances though....

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! zorbazzzzzzzzzzz i fucking love it there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! man, i usually get up to the whitefish chain once a summer i know quite a few peeps with cabins up there, but so far haven't gone this year love getting drunk as SHIT at the wharf and just trolling through the channels

this cabin is actually on Sugar Lake which is right by Clearwater (past Monticello when you're going up 94)

hahah no i didn't go fire one up, they know i blaze though but out of respect i usually do not get baked around them (i'll be bringin sum up north for the week though )

and i wouldn't say the good daughter by any means quite the opposite actually ... BUT they let me use their pool/bar whenever i want and watch my dog on the weekends when i'm not around so i gladly cut their lawn/help with yardwork and snowblow every week for them without a question while nothing is perfect, i'd say i have a pretty good friendship with my parents if anything...

I know where you are coming from about waiting for something bad to happen. Just enjoy the good while ya got it. I am a bit jealous o your upcoming vacation adventure. Have a great time.

For me, I have to clean my castle today. We are having a birthday party here for my daughter tonight. About 30 people here, including all the in-laws. I can feel the joy bubbling up inside of me. I hate having any kind of gathering at my house, especially one that involves many sticky children.

yes! clearwater is an awesome little town...

so this is a little confusing but it's actually not my immediate family's cabin... it's my aunts cabin and she is renting it out for a week to us, BUT my parents owned the cabin directly next to this cabin for 20 years (they bought it when they were pregnant with me) so this is where i grew up basically, it's my favorite place on earth by miles and miles.... anyways my parents unfortunately sold their cabin when my sister and i moved to Ohio, it was just too much work for them with us being gone and my brother lived on his own at that point and wasn't up there much anymore...

so it is nice having my aunt still on the lake, this cabin we're going to has been in my family for 70 years and my mom's been going up to it since she can remember. it's not like we never get too go up there but this is the first time we get to spend a full week up there
