That was amazing. Still so gutten he's gone. I didn't think anything would hit me harder than Cornell this year but this is just too much to handle. So unexpected. Just saw 2 shows this year and always thought there would be another.

I thought Miley and her dads Wildflowers was pretty cool.

    Sad Petty is gone.

Miley did an excellent job on Wildflowers. Not really impressed with the Gator tribute though.

What's not impressive about a stadium with about 90,000 people singing a tribute to the man?

90k or 100k or whatever number signing a song together doesn't automatically impress me. Nothing personal towards you.

Crawling Back To You might be my favorite TP song ever, and that's saying something. It's such an amazing example of how great the Heartbreakers are as a band.

"Our family sat together this morning with the Medical Examiner – Coroner’s office and we were informed of their final analysis that Tom Petty passed away due to an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications.
Unfortunately Tom’s body suffered from many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip.
Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury.
On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.
We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.
As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.
On a positive note we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40 plus year career. He was extremely proud of that achievement in the days before he passed.
We continue to mourn with you and marvel at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' incredible positive impact on music and the world. And we thank you all for your love and support over the last months.
Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately.
We would be grateful if you could respect the privacy of the entire Heartbreaker family during this difficult time.

    Dana Petty and Adria Petty

Michael? Or was that different drugs? Different circumstances, but still “accidental” od.

No, it was determined he died of natural causes.

I thought Michael was because of the mix of drugs rather than one specific drug. I didn't think he was on opiates either.

    Could be very wrong though.

Eating dinner and drinking a beer to this tonight. I need to buy the DVD. My dad had this on DVD when I was growing up, some of my earliest memories of Petty are tied to this performance. I remember being maybe 9 or 10 and my parents and their friends would be absolutely lit howling along to "Jammin' Me" "Runnin' Down a Dream" "Breakdown" & "You Don't Know How It Feels."

It's super 90s but I think that adds to the charm for me. Lots of memories were tied to and soundtracked by this man and his band.

Posted this in the vinyl thread as we were discussing it there, but thought I should drop it here as well. There's a countdown clock on TP's website leading up to an announcement tomorrow morning. If you have Sirius, they made the announcement early tonight on Tom Petty Radio.

It is NOT, unfortunately, a Wildflowers box set.

It *is* a box set called 'American Treasure' that features 60 tracks of previously unreleased material, both studio and live. It was compiled by his wife and daughter, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, and 'longtime studio collaborator' Ryan Ulate.

They played the first 'single' from the collection, an unreleased song from the Long After Dark sessions called 'Keep A Little Soul,' which at first listen was a really good tune!

The full details will come out tomorrow morning.

Just scratching the surface of this release so far with great live tracks and b sides. Burning one for Tom! Great collection for fans. Was waiting for Keeping Me Alive for a while.
