It has its pros and cons. I've been up here for 5+ years now. Its a beautiful state, and if you are an outdoorsy person that goes a long way. The lake is an awesome body of water for fishing or other recreation, lots of trails for hiking, and of course the winter activities the state offers. Solid food and beer, lots of farm-fresh options, very "mom & pop" when it comes to businesses.
I do find it very expensive! Granted, I am in a labor union (not a very union friendly state), and my wages are among the lowest in the country...yet the cost of living up here is among the highest. Housing, especially in the Burlington area is crazy (to rent or own). Roads are pretty shitty, could use a lot of repair overall. Winters are shitty (but you know that). Very close to Montreal, which is a nice little get away on occasion. Certainly a different kind of state, very set in its roots!
I dont see me staying here long term, simply cause of the money factor - I can make a lot more elsewhere and that money goes a lot further with respect to the cost of living. But aside from that aspect, I really have nothing to bad to say about this place - pretty cool state, very relaxed and laid back, fairly clean, friendly...just expensive!
