idk. like i said... maybe they run you through a bunch of tests like vanilla sky and ask what kind of adventure you want?

what if he's a guest but agreed to be vulnerable to make it more realistic?

but he gets to start over at the beginning if he fails until he saves the princess?

just a thought.

or maybe he is a robot and loses his shit.

but i think he's definitely the hero.

I think it's at least plausible because otherwise why were the robots killing the dad?

ed harris mentions that he gave up easily "that time," so the whole situation could be something requested or set up by him on a regular basis (to get to the girl)

yeah, ed harris can be a guest at the same time as marsden.

which explains marsden's surprise that harris wasn't killed when he shot him as well as marsden's shaky hand and refusal to pull the trigger when his muzzle was on harris' forehead.

it's possible they are both guests on different payment plans (one higher, one lower, allowing one invincibility and the other not).

but to the extent that neither knows that there is more than one paying guest playing the game at the same time...

    make sense?

    Marsden is a robot.

I am less convinced that Harris is a real person.

    Just finished the first episode

I'm on board for sure. Concept is great. Dialogue is shaky but whatever

The young guy who comes in the train has to be an AI right? He's repeating the day and he "died"

Towards the end of the episode when they are gathering the defective robots, one of the workers says she has two more, the last two over here. Those two were marsden and the girl. Both are robots.

Yeah I was wondering what that represented.

She went from saying she never killed a living creature just a few minutes earlier to killing that fly...wonder what the meaning of that was, or if it's an omen that the robots have figured out a way to override their ability to not hurt guests/living things? Does Dolores still remember the message from her dad?

lol I didn't think the show was confusing at all. Apparently this thread did.

Which is funny, because I am usually the idiot when it comes to shows like these.

I guess my biggest question is the about the basement. It kind of looks like an old shopping mall or something. I wonder if Westworld was built on top of something that existed before.

Also, do we know when this takes place? Is it the present or in the future?

I saw it as some sort of higher level of awareness. The show began with a fly crawling over the eye of one of the androids, and it didn't even blink.

Earlier in the episode it was said that Anthony Hopkins had been secretly manipulating code and adding specific, nuanced responses to the hosts. However, I would guess that Hopkins manipulations go far beyond nuanced, pre-scripted responses. He is rewriting the base code for the hosts, giving them a sentient awareness, which leads to the more lifelike responses, such as slapping the fly.

    Host apocalypse season 2!

I think it's safe to assume this takes place in the future. During the discussion between Ford and Bernard regarding the reveries, Ford says something along the lines of "we've cured all disease..."

As far as location, the r/westworld subreddit has posted some interesting theories about it either being on another planet, or underground.

Highly recommend surfing r/westworld if you're interested in the show and have questions.

    second watch...

i think everyone coming in on the train is a guest. evident by how they're all talking together about their first time, and how awesome it is and "it better be with how much we are paying for it". there can be multiple guests at the same time. but they can all have different payment plans with different depths. this is why i think marsden paid the highest package to make it as real as possible and to be able to be killed and restart again.

that's why he knew the woman and said that "he came back for her". he's been coming back for her to save her. she's his princess and she needs saving. it's just a big video game.

What? You're making things up that have no support based on what we know (as are many people in this thread).

After his first death two women on the train see him and one says, "Oh my God, they're so lifelike. Like that one - he's perfect." His dialogue upon returning is identical each time. Guests recognize him and know him by name from a prior visit. And again, he was being repaired.
