Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

In 1995 I spent hours trying to make out the lyrics to "Heathcliff's Haiku Warriors" on a bootleg CD I picked up at a local record store. I was convinced there were real words in there. Folly o' youth right there.

There are definitely some lyrics in the 3/23/93 version.

Was listening to Drive in Drive Out today on Crash. It isn't one of my favorite songs, but I have to say the sound they captured on the studio cut (and that whole album in general) is so BIG. It really sounds like a great live recording. I feel like DMB hasn't been able to capture the great sound in the studio since the Big 3. ED, BW, and AFTW all seem to just be lacking that big full sound.

Hopefully Batson is telling the truth when he says this new album is the best of the century.

I think BWGK has a big full band sound at times.

Luther College is so amazing. And to think, most of the people attending back in 1997 were probably like, “hey something cool to do tonight I guess”

Everyday is 17 yrs old. When it came out the band had only been around about 10 years. Chew on that!

It dawned on me a couple weeks ago that this summer will mark a decade since my first show at Crew Stadium in 08. Just crazy.

The mix of the entire Crash album is impeccable. I was just having a conversation the other day where I said Crash makes the cut for top 5 favorite albums of all time for me. It's the quintessential DMB album. If someone doesn't know DMB, I give them Crash and say, if you're not into this album you won't like the band.

The 1:23 mark of "Corporation" by Jack White sounds a lot like the JTR jam.

Oh, sure. There are some words. A few even occur in order. But at the time I thought it was a complete song--had no idea it was just improvised, with some random unconnected lyrics and a lot of indistinct Dave-noises.

I ended up writing a poem out of the few phrases I thought I could make out in the recording.

All of this talk of what covers to see live, why not something Dave has been apart of? I think Joyful Girl would be a great to see live. Any others?

Just wait until it dawns on you that this upcoming summer your first show was 20 years ago like it has for me.

I'm sure Alpine posted this as a "Dave comes here all the time" marketing thing versus "Dave will be here this summer" but to put this picture out to highlight the 2018 season tickets just seemed like salt in the wound for DMB@Alpine fans.

Bartender has only been played in the encore once full band – 6.20.00 – which was its second full band performance. If Boyd and the Band work things out I'd love to get Bartender in the encore.

I haven't given this much real thought in the last decade or so... but what exactly do we think changed after BTCS? The early albums were dead-up magical, there was something in that music that was unlike anything else I've ever run across. They were art pieces.

Something changed in Dave--with whatever happened in the Lillywhite sessions, and then Ballard moved in, and suddenly the Dave became all focused on "tightening" the songs in the studio. Which always bothered me, because if anything I wanted the band to push toward more radical musical ground, be even more outside the mold.

I hope someday we get the whole story. The back half of AFTW felt, to me, like they were finally starting to reclaim some of that looseness and magic. But I wonder if that was all Lillywhite's influence, and what that means for the next album.

What we have from the LWS is the next logical evolution from BTCS. It's some of the best music ever, but unfortunately it took Dave being in a dark place in his life to create such amazing music. During that period, he was drinking heavily and in his own words was writing "sad bastard songs". He needed to get away from that period for his mental health and physical health. I love what we have of the LWS, but to me that's all it should be, just raw demos essentially, and the raw recording of the songs fits the mood so well. I'm glad he was able to move out of that dark place and yet we still get to hear what was made during that time. People bash him for changing his writing style, but I think it was necessary for his state of mind.

And yeah I totally agree with this. I hear a lot of riffs that remind me of some of the stuff they were writing around 2000, and the whole album overall has a more natural feel to it than the previous few efforts

not putting too much thought into that, it's blatant marketing when they do that. they've been doing that for years now

i'll be hitting the 19 year mark in August which is just crazy

my random thought of the day: there are very likely DMB fans who came aboard in the last 5-7ish years who prefer the newer albums over their output in the 90's

Such a great release. I wish we had more 92-93 shows. That Dancing Nancies on LT 37 is nuts. And the early raw Halloween, crazy Two Step jam, spotlight, “Desperate Hours”, etc. damn, so good.

    All of that.

Boyd jamming freely was pretty awesome. First time hearing full band Angel From Montgomery... had no idea Boyd sang on that.
