Re: Songs you SHOULD love, but that you hate

Ive always felt the people who dislike shotgun and IOY just get too caught up in the lyrics and let that consume their attention during the songs.

IOY is very much quintessential DMB.

I don't know how you could get 'caught up' in the lyrics of either. I think they suit the music phenomenally well...

I have no problem with IOY’s lyrics. The chorus has always felt so choppy and forced with the up and down “I FAAAAAALLLL so HAAAAAARRRRD.... “ I just don’t find it pleasing to listen to; at all.

As far as being “quintessential DMB” we’ll all have to disagree.

But that’s the great thing about music. It’s all a matter or perspective and opinion and there’s no right or wrong answer.

Some bloke on the previous page said they don’t like Recently or TSTJL. That’s something I can’t wrap my head around. But to each their own.

    Different people hear different things.

EDIT: just listened again to the Fenway version... yep still don’t like it

Satellite! Despise this song, been played at 18 of my shows and haven't sat thru any of them. Didn't like it 20 years ago, still dont, never will. All good, gotta pee sometime (though the bathroom / beer lines during this song have gotten longer and longer over the years, so not sure how unpopular my opinion is anymore)

With you on all points. Even when it was beloved after UTTAD came out, I could not get into this song. Hands down my least favorite song on that album. Never understood the hype.

I don't dislike them but Say Goodbye and Tripping Billies are two classics that don't do much for me

    Shotgun.

And of the Big 3, I would say Dancing Nancies ranks pretty low for me overall (but I definitely don't hate it - just don't love it).

I felt the same way for a long long time. Then like a light switch i loved the song, i saw a great live version, don't remember which one, and now i love Shotgun.

    Really?

I honestly thought there was some love out there for some of these. It's good to know I'm not alone!

You've legit listed 40 DMB songs or covers here. I've determined that you don't actually enjoy the Dave Matthews Band and have no business posting on a DMB fan forum.

I have a theory “Be Yourself” and “Drunken Soldier” were subtle jabs at Phillip Phillips. Even during the lyric of Gaucho

    *gasp*

To each their own, of course. It's just strange to see such a classic ranking low. For a long time, Nancies was my No. 1 fav.

Oh, I definitely think there's some wordplay going on in Drunken Soldier about that, although I think it's subtle enough. Also, that bit goes:

    Fill up your head
    Fill up your heart
    and take your shot
Don't waste time trying to be something you're not

(I also think "That's not a star, that's a satellite" is part of this, but man, if you're gonna get burned by Dave Matthews you couldn't ask for a classier line)

...That's just off the top of my head.
I actually agree with you on everything but the bold. That's not to say I don't sometimes enjoy those other songs, just not usually.

It's crazy to see people not like Raven or The Riff. Those songs are both excellent to me, and I wasn't aware that those two were viewed negatively. I guess The Riff makes sense because it's off AFTW, but Raven is baffling.

I think it cut even deeper because he wasn't just some low-key DM wannabe. He was on national television winning a popularity contest by pretending to be Dave Matthews. Otherwise I'm sure Dave would have let it pass by without comment.

Yeaaa, I don’t think so. Don’t think Dave gives a shit about Phillip Phillips...

Yeah, I thought Drunken Soldier was written in the Stand Up sessions. And even if the lyrics weren't the same then, the ones for the album had to have been finished in 2012, and that's when Philip Phillis started popping up, the timing is too close. Also, I'm pretty sure that song was written from the band to their children. I Don't think Dave would be that petty.

    Why can't it be both?

You must really hate the Proudest (tease) -> Satellite combo then!

I was carrying on the joke, I thought everyone was joking about this?! Unless you've taken it to next-level joke, in which case

Raven and Idea of You keep popping up on here. I get it for Raven, I didn't like it massively till a while ago (it's now top 30%), but I don't understand Idea of You. Super smooth, really chilled but intense too, huge sound whilst not being overbearing, passionate.... but then I hate Cry Freedom and IBYU, so I can hardly talk about what should be liked haha
