Re: Is DMB your favorite band?

They are my favorite band. I used to think I hated them. I used to be such a music snob, I was super into Progressive Rock, Jazz Fusion, and Classical when I was going through high school. I was always judging bands/music based on, basically, how "talented" I perceived the musician's to be. By my senior year, I started getting into Phil Collins solo career sorta as a joke, but then fell in love with him and "pop" in general. It was a big step for me to get out of the "it's not good if it's not complex" mindset. I still love Jazz, and Prog as they've shaped my musical tastes, but I've found so much more joy in music when it's not a competition of who has the most crazy time signature changes and bass solos etc. After high school I started extensively diving into Pop, and New Wave music, and Funk music and, early Electronic music (like YMO and Kraftwerk), and Folk music while still going back to my roots of Complex music and Jazz. I eventually realized the sounds that I like, and how all the genre's that I enjoy listening to most, are all linked in some way. And that's why DMB is my favorite band. They take all of my favorite sounds and mend them so well into one package. They are a Rock band, but they are so much more than that. I've obsessed over a lot of bands through my life, but nothing to the extent of what I have with DMB. I thank my brother for introducing me to this band that quickly became and will remain, my favorite.

I will always love DMB, but musical tastes evolve and I don't think I can say they are my favorite band anymore. Will always be close to the top.

They'll never drop out of my top 5. I'll never get to run around and follow a band with friends like I was able to do in college with DMB. They hold a special place...not sure if they're #1 right now though

Tool (and Alice in Chains) are up there for me too... but they have so little material it's hard to put them in my top 5.

It means that if you have 30,000 posts on a message board for a band that’s not even in your top 20 then he can’t imagine how many posts you have on the other message boards you post on for bands you’re a fan of.

Without a doubt yes. I hate to say, but there are few things in this world that I absolutely love, and DMB is one of them. Plus, tmi, but with the mental health issues that I struggle with, DMB has not only uplifted me during very bad times, I also listen to them every single day as a mindfulness exercise by focusing on Carter's drumming. I don't think I could ever express how much their music has meant to me.

For sure. I can't think of any other band that I listen to where I would spend x amount of money on to see 24 of their shows.

This used to be easy for me to answer. The 2016 tour was terrible in my opinion and I'm not a big on seeing Dave & Tim live so I didn't see a show last Summer. Widespread Panic is my close second favorite band but after the 8 epic shows I caught last year and the two from Birmingham this year, they are easily my favorite now. Also, with the state of DMB and no Boyd, I don't know what to except this Summer. I'm cautiously optimistic that they will be awesome and in September, DMB will be back to my favorite band again.

My dad used to know some people that owned a skybox at MSG. They asked if he wanted the Straits tickets because they weren’t interested (these guys were in their 60s or so). Anyway, it was the Brothers In Arms tour, I was in junior high. Billy Joel was a guest musician that night and I think David Sanborn showed up and played a bit as well.

A couple of years later he got the same tickets to Pink Floyd at MSG and was going to trade my sister. Plans changed and my sister and I went instead. Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. We snuck down and sat in the lower isles for about half the show...security.ushers never bothered us for some reason. It was also excellent.

The only other singer/band who is on par with DMB is David Gray for me. Fan site forum is dead for him, very few live releases... so, there's not as much money to be spent or fan engagement to be had on David Gray. He seems to be a much better lyricist and thoughtful person.

However, I gladly feed the DMB money machine.

    Honorable mentions:

    Eric Clapton
Harry Connick Jr - pre American Idol/Talk Show
    Hanson
    Sting

Shit, I’d have to add Tool to my favorites list as well. And Tori Amos.

While that’s might seem like a non-sequitor it’s not I need my mind. Tool and Tori share a unique place in my music appreciation. They are so intense I need the depth of their musical expression that I was almost ruled by them on first listen...I was emotionally mature enough to handle the honesty and brutality or the horror and beauty of their music. I’ve thought at times that it might be Maynard, but I don’t particularly like his other stuff. But when he’s playing with Jones and boys it something more, something better...much more powerful.

So my thoughts are as follows. They are my favorite band of all time. I have spent so much time and money on them. I wouldn’t trade that for everything. I saw my first show in 1999 At 16. They opened my my mind and ears to how awesome live music is. I see a ton of shows (other bands) bc of them and music is my favorite hobby and a lot of that I thank dmb for. I also have met a ton of people from touring which is another reason I love this band. But like the quote above this. I don’t think they are the best band right now. But every time I say that they pull me back in. That’s why no one will ever top dmb for me.

Let me fix this as auto correct on my iPad made this nonsensical:

While that might seem like a non-sequitor, it’s not I need my mind. Tool and Tori share a unique place in my music appreciation. They are so intense in the depth of their musical expression that I was almost repulsed by them on first listen...I guess I wasn't emotionally mature enough to handle the honesty and brutality or the horror and beauty of their music. I’ve thought at times that it might be Maynard, but I don’t particularly like his other stuff. But when he’s playing with Jones and boys it something more, something better...much more powerful.

    Addendum (the last sentence):
Dave is somewhat this way too. Dave is amazing, Dave and Tim is even more so, but DMB magic.

This brings up an interesting (perhaps obvious) point. So much of this band is the tour and atmosphere of attending shows. The actual music of DMB 3.0/4.whatevertheyare can take a backseat another preferable artist... but I'd never even fathom spending the time and $$ of the 48 shows I've seen on another band.

This doesn't account for groups in the past, of course. I would have seen a ton of shows spanning multiple artists/groups in the 60's-80's if I had been alive.
