Acoustical perfection.

By far my favorite DMB related release.

It is an amazing recording, but would many people really put it above RR95? Just wondering.

I would... RR95 is good, but dmb hadn't matured to the level of awesomeness that the 98 tour brought. One of my favorite dave songs is DIDO, but i can't stand the rr95 version b/c dave hadn't written the words yet! I prefer chicago98

I still listen to Luther College all the time. I am so intrigued by the '96 Dave and Tim Winter tour. I do really enjoy the Live Trax release of the 2/19 show but to me it doesn't sound nearly as good as the Luther show. I feel like something special happened that night where it turned into perfection. All of Tim's solos and fills, Dave's voice, setlist, crowd, and not a ton of stories or davespeak between songs. They seemed to stay really true to the songs and songwriting - somehow performing practically the best version of every song they played that night. It does blow my mind that no pictures or videos exist from the show, I feel like it adds to the mystic of whatever happened that night. I will definitely be listening to this for the rest of my life.

I was at this show. Last night of 3 night Iowa run we went on. Met them afterwards, quite easily too, as we were basically the only non-LC students at the show. My guess is they saw four scruffy lookin kids from Boulder and noticed we looked different than the Lutheran students. Show was incredible. Fans there really only knew UTTAD songs. I yelled out Cry Freedom, which Dave promptly played after starting a few notes into another song. You can actually hear the "Freedom" part of my shout out on this CD right before he plays it. We talked about it afterwards. When he and Tim realized we were hopping back in our car to drive 14 hours back to boulder in the middle of the night, they stopped signing autographs, came over and took pictures with us, and walked us to the door. Memorable night.

First off, how fucking crazy is it to think about three consecutive nights in Iowa for D+T. If only that sort of thing could happen again.

Second, aside from the radio hits, Christmas Song from Luther College is the first "deeper cut" song that ever really hit and stuck with me. So it's fun for me to go back to this release. Not to mention how beautiful it is as a whole. That doesn't hurt.

Throw on some good headphones, sit back and relax in my own little D+T universe.

I agree with this. But I'll expand a bit.

Both are great shows, but I like the set on LT23 better than on Luther. Similar shows obviously, but LT23 basically has everything Luther has plus more. I really like the Warehouse opener, much more than the OSW opener on Luther. Add that to a (really good) LIOG, Leave Me Praying (or Weight of the World or whatever), Hold Me Down (holy shit is this little one off song a gem) and a Tangerine cover in the encore, none of which are featured on Luther, and I can honestly say:

    LT23 > Luther College

The mixes on both are outstanding, so those cancel each other out, and Dave's vocals and Tim's guitar were both on point pretty much every show of that tour, so there's no real advantage there for either. The only thing Luther has going for it is that badass version of Deed Is Done (which is fucking awesome, and the best I've heard, full band or just D+T).

edit: forget about the Watchtower on LT23. One of two released D+T Watchtowers, and the much better of the two IMO. Another +1 in LT23's favor.

Live at Luther is the PERFECT Dave and Tim release. They could put anyone of our dreamsets together and perform it and it would still not macth Live at Luther. Dave's voice, for one, was incredible and so crisp.

Tim's presence was perfect. I prefer the 90's Tim much more than the 2008 and on Tim. He had nice, detailed and original solos. He didn't mask his notes with effects and it was just the two of them and their guitars. I have a friend who really has no interest in DMB or any of their music, but he absolutely loves L@LC. I don't know how else to explain this show other than it is Dave and Tim at their best with only their guitars.

I do like the Little Thing on Luther better than LT23. I think the Crash version on Luther is stronger than LT23. Though I enjoy covers, I think Luther is cool that it's all originals and so good. Granny in the encore is great and the only Halloween on the tour. I enjoy Satellite by itself without Proudest Monkey in front of it. I enjoy the OSW opener without the swim naked outro and also the speedy version of Tripping Billies. Tim's solo on Typical Situation is superb and this version of Stream is one of the best I've heard.

The Center for Faith and Life was the venue the show is from. It boasts a plexiglass shell over the stage which makes the room's acoustics unique to most other places I have heard music. I am guessing the acoustics of this venue were one reasons why this show was chosen for an official release in the late 90's.

Here is the link the venues site....they have a 360 degree virtual tour if you wish to see what it looked like. Link is below.

If I had them I would. Remember, this was before college kids having cellphones. And I learned to never trust a pothead again with the responsibility of developing or NOT losing a disposable camera. Still angers me. The venue was cool. We ate in their dining hall and took a walking tunnel from there to the venue. Their winters suck and they have these tunnels for the students. Wild night all around. First night in Davenport, Iowa was a cooler, old school opera type theater.
