It's a 2001 banger music video is what it is. Still stand by the fact that I'd take I Did It over SMLAM at a show at this point.

Dave and Carter Warehouse Sessions is the best thing the band has released in the last 10 years.

The latest installment of the Summer Tour Warm Up series is Sugar Will from 7.02.19

I know I’m in the minority but I like the nice tight Sugar Wills as of recent. It’s not the big hypnotical epic it once was but it’s still cool and I’m glad there’s soundboard audio of it now.

Yeah I appreciate it, I have a couple but the horn mixing is all jacked up in most of them which irks me especially in its current iteration

I hated the black finish, the sunburst suits Dave much better imo lol

It's a hybrid design that has smaller shoulders than a jumbo, but definitely a jumbo looking bottom...it reminds me of what a few manufacturers have called a mini-jumbo, but larger. Yeah, it doesn't make sense...

So much for black being slimming as it def looks bigger than the bursts...

Sugar Will at SPAC this year is pretty much my favorite that I've heard to date. I've liked all three and don't have a issue with being that familiar with the old versions. It just sounds great to me, but this one was the best. Jeff's playing on it was excellent.

Interesting. I think another thing that makes it look even bigger than the burst SJ is that the burst one has the abalone trim around it which gives the illusion that the wood part is smaller. The black one has no trim. Either way, it looks gigantic even on Dave. It makes my back hurt just looking at it

Folks that have seen and loved older versions from 2004 have complained that the way DMB has been playing SW in the last few years is less-than, trash, or sucks. They have a developed preference for a "definitive" version.

Since I'd not heard the song live until 2016 and primarily listening to studio albums, I haven't the notion/bias of thinking older versions are objectively better. While I've since heard a few of the older ones, I can't say they're much more than different...so I can just enjoy the latest takes.

The only thing that "improves" some of the older versions is Roi playing on them. The core of the song, however, continues to sound great to me.

I am one of those people. To me the current versions are greatly inferior to the 2004 versions. But, I think it's not difficult to appreciate both. You just have to look at them as two different songs. The 2004 versions just wouldn't work in this contemporary version of the band.

I asked the clarifying question because I thought it was weird the way you phrased it as one having an 'issue' that they had heard the original versions of the song. I want more issues like that.

Just got done listening to the Norlander interview with Lillywhite on BTCS. I’m sure it’s been discussed on here ad nauseam but what unbelievable stuff.

I know Boyd’s flubs and consistent inconsistency became really well known especially around here, but I found it fascinating how inferior of a musician to the rest of the band Lillywhite made him out to be. Seems like it took a fair amount of hand-holding and coddling to get anything out of him studio-wise.

Objectively he was never a "great" violinist. None of what he played was particularly difficult, but it was part of what we all got to know in the songs and the sound of the band.

His range as a player is such that I still think if he were replaced by a "professional" violinist, people would be surprised at how different it sounds, especially the solos. They'd have the violin back, but it would be quite different from what they'd come to expect from the instrument.

Not that folks wouldn't like it, but the player would almost definitely not sound like Boyd. I know that I wouldn't want them to...

Kinda like how we got a replacement Sax player, but his intonation is entirely different than Roi.

Give me violin that is in tune and in time 100% of the time. A great example of Boyd’s parts being played differently and being fantastic are Buddy’s “violin” lines in Pig this tour. I can’t even imagine how great it would be if there was an actual violinist doing the equivalent of that on all songs that Boyd played on.

Buddy covering the violin lines for me is further proof they don't need a violin but I'm aware my opinion is unpopular

I’ve kind of flipped on this recently, I used to be in your camp but I’ve come to the realization there are some songs that are mandatory violin solo. Mainly nancies and graves; the tim electric solo just doesn’t do it for me.

These are just two examples of classic songs that have no business being as rare as they are the past 3 tours.

I've loved his solos on LIOG this year which is saying a lot considering I'm generally not a big fan of electric guitar and couldn't stand Tim for years, Buddy wrecks the current version with playing organ

I love most of what he's covering with the keys, but I don't really like his violin fills on YMDT. They're a little harsh compared to the rest of the song.

I closed my eyes during many songs at Jones Beach and you really can't tell it's NOT violin on some of Buddy's Boyd fills.

Yeah he clearly was listening to a lot of DMB over the covid break; even some of the more subtle parts underneath Dave singing verses etc are pretty spot on.

Some of the piano solos he’s been offering are fantastic. Just not a big fan of the church organ solos on songs that typically have a violin solo.

From Live Trax Vol. 28 (JP Jones Arena - Charlottsville, VA - 19.11.2010) a great 15’ version of #41 feat. Joe Lawlor who duets with Tim.

Multicam video never seen on official DMB channel

Anyone watch Midnight Mass and hear the cover of Bartender in it? Episode two. Pretty damn cool

Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

Anybody had a complete excel list of the 3078 DMB shows (so far), in the format they appear on Tour Central?
It should have the following fields:
(Date / Venue Location / Rating / Showflow)

I’d like to use it for some excel pivots, which would allow to get some cool stats and charts.
I could take the data from the website but maybe someone has already done that.

I would love to see DMB with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band do "Beginnings" by Chicago. That would be epic.
