Re: Blu-Ray is awesome

People make fun of me for still having the Netflix Blu-ray mailing program.

I laugh at them for watching movies all in shitty streaming quality without HD audio.

I'm probably as picky as anyone regarding high quality presentation. I have a dedicated media room for watching movies. If it's a movie I don't own and I care about it's presentation, then I use Redbox. There are plenty of movies I watch on Netflix though where I don't care that much about the presentation (indie movies, documentaries, limited release movies, etc.). However, things like Marvel movies or Star Wars movies I would never stream for example.

I watched the UHD blu-ray of Saving Private Ryan last night at someone's house that has a JVC 4K projector and Atmos surround sound with 2 dual 18" subwoofers (4 subwoofer cones) plus Crowson tactile seat shakers. It was pretty fantastic. The image quality on the UHD is very impressive.

Fuck yeah, that sounds like an awesome set-up; I've heard the new Saving Private Ryan UHD is reference through and through, will be one of the first discs I pick up when I finally move to 4K hopefully early next year.

I just don't make very good money unfortunately, and I can't go half-assed otherwise it won't be an improvement over my Panasonic 1080p plasma.

    Black Friday this year!

I am watching AVS OLED LG Great Deals thread daily.

Almost pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago when Green Toe was selling the 65 inch C8 for $2499 with no tax and shipping and it comes from an authorized dealer....and apparently if you have a CC with price protection you can price match it with one of the shady bait and switch companies and possibly get even more back...

I figured you already know this stuff....but just in case I found it interesting.

I posted this in the vinyl thread also, but thought some folks here might have some insight as well.

I've been looking to add a SACD/DVD-A player to my setup at home, and thought the best way to do so on the cheap may be by going for an older generation DVD player that has SACD/DVD-A playback capabilities.

Looking at the Pioneer Elite DV-45A. Would this be a solid option for those purposes?

Probably. Pretty much all Oppo blu-ray players do it too. I have two Oppo players and they are amazing. They handle all media and can be controlled through a phone app if desired, which I use.

Yeah, the Oppo blu-ray players are more expensive though, and all I'm looking for is a SACD/DVD-A player for my 2-channel audio setup. I've already got a UHD player for my home theater. So, not super concerned with needing a phone app or video playback at all, just something to play SACD's.

That was my first 24-bit player back in 2005, if you're going with analog interconnects I'd highly recommend it - due to no HDMI and no high res digital outside what's supported by optical/coax, it has wicked fast load times and response times. An excellent player and you can probably find a decent working one for $35~$65 if you look hard enough.

Excellent, thanks! And yep, just using regular RCA connects so I think this should work fine. SACD is such a niche thing that I didn't want to sink a ton of coin into an expensive player, but I'd like to ability to start collecting some of the better titles.

    Thanks Doby and Benny!

For what it's worth, certain models of Oppo players can be used to rip SACD's. My Oppo 103 can do it, so I've ripped all of my SACD's and I simply play them from a hard drive I have connected to my Oppo player. It's really convenient to be able to control using the phone app then without ever needing to get up to change discs.

I watched the 4K blu-ray of The Matrix last night. It has Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It's quite nice! The surround effects work really well especially during the final climax scenes of rescuing Morpheus. The bass wasn't quite as strong as I would have preferred or guessed it would have been, but that's my only minor criticism. The picture quality is great with lots of clear detail in most scenes. In a few scenes the pre-2000 era special effects do look very slightly dated, but overall it holds up pretty well all things considered. One thing is for sure, The Matrix has never looked or sounded better than this version.

I also watched the 4K Dark Knight blu-ray earlier this week as well. That was really fantastic too. It still only has the same 5.1 sound mix as the previous blu-ray, but it's still a great soundtrack. Very dynamic and creates a nice wide soundstage with good bass. The picture quality is also fantastic in most scenes, especially the 70mm IMAX scenes.

Love the sound mixing on Nolan's movies.

Have you enjoyed either Interstellar or Dunkirk in 4K yet Benny? The low end in either of those will satisfy even the most cracked-out basshead.

Only the regular blu-ray versions of those. I plan to buy the 4K Interstellar when the price drops a bit. I have a price watch on it. I do own the regular blu-ray version of it as well.

    Has anyone tried out rent4K.com?

I wish Netflix would add UHD blu-rays to their dvd/blu-ray plan. Apparently Redbox is testing them in a few markets right now, but nothing near me.

Got a good deal on Amazon Canada for Interstellar 4K, CDN$19.99 (US$15.25) - can't wait until hopefully around next summer to upgrade my HT room to 4K. Have a quote already to get the ceiling redone and remove the crappy shite 80s fireplace I regret not gutting in '09 when I first moved into the house. Getting a great price on the 65" Panny 4K OLED right now, US$2200 for the flagship 1000-series model.

Interstellar is quite something, same audio track as the Blu-ray obviously...can't remember too much else working out my subs like that.

Happy my local video rental store gets in 4K discs, will come in handy next year as I usually only watch new releases once unless it's something huge I love like Interstellar, Inception, etc.

    What's a video rental store?

Actually, I should check that out. I have a Family Video right near me - they seem to be everywhere and how they are still in business baffles me because I literally don't know ANYONE who still goes to a video store outside of Redbox.

LG just rolled out a 88" 8K OLED yesterday. Might as well wait for 8K now, ha!

Actually, I should check that out. I have a Family Video right near me - they seem to be everywhere and how they are still in business baffles me because I literally don't know ANYONE who still goes to a video store outside of Redbox.
Surprisingly these guys are pretty busy, they do used video game sales / trades, have an adult video section in the back hahaha, and they get in 20-30 copies of new releases and usually in first week of release you'll find it hard on a Friday to get a copy.

My area is 140,000 people and I think there are perhaps 2-3 video rental stores, but I only use the one as it's the big one. They sell vape stuff, import a lot of horrible US pop/candy but also get in some of the good Cadbury's UK stuff, every night is rent 2 get one free (and tuesday is rent 1 get one free) and it's CDN$13 then for 3 Blu-rays.

Saves lots of money, paying basically $4 to watch Avengers.

I know there are full Blu-ray rips on places like rarbg but I prefer getting the real disc even if it's just a rental, and not risking legal BS with my IP and can't be fucked to do VPN.

    Re: Blu-Ray is awesome

Fairly new to 4K, got some good deals on a handful of movies the last couple months - Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, The Matrix, The Big Lebowski, The Martian, Goodfellas, T2, Argo, Braveheart, BBC Planet Earth II / Blue Planet II, and I think one or two others. Been extremely impressed, have watched all of them except T2 and Goodfellas (just tested the BBC collections, cant wait to give them a full watch...look amazing). I have a modest standard blu-ray collection, 200ish titles. Looking for any recommendations on must-have 4K titles, maybe acclaimed movies that are worth the upgrade (i.e. Saving Private Ryan), or personal favorites that might get overlooked? Obviously there are only so many 4K options at this point, but I really have no intention (even long term) to upgrade everything, pretty content with standard HD for your "average" movie.

    Re: Blu-Ray is awesome

I was looking for this thread.

I've recently - oh my gosh - got into Blu Rays. Mainly for titles I can't easily find on DVD. Or all-time favourites that I'd like an extra copy of, with more features, etc. Like Zodiac director's cut of King Kong 2005 extended. Have the DVDs, along with 1000+ others. But it's nice to have the extra bonus stuff. The Master BD has stuff the DVD doesn't.

Now if I can just find some of them new for reasonable prices. I've searched locally for used copies of several faves, but I'm sol right now, and since the Canadian dollar sucks ass compared with the American... the prices on Amazon.ca are garbage.
