Re: Star Wars: Han Solo (May 25th, 2018)

It was Kathleen Kennedy's birthday this weekend and the Star Wars social media channels posted it was. The twitter post was taken down but the Facebook one is still active. (I don't see one on Instagram so maybe that one was taken down too) Can only guess that the Twitter post saw a ton of harsh feedback. Great work, folks.

I get being disappointed by a movie but all these people acting like SW has killed their first born and raped their family. Do these people not have a grip on their sanity or something?

Yeah, see... I really don't agree with this sentiment. I don't think it's 'most'. I think there's just platforms now for the ignorant minority to be heard at volumes.

    not really

I'd assume that SW fandom is a large part of their identity and that accounts for the overblown action they take

I understand having SW as part of your identity. It's a cult following. I guess I just don't understand the depths of hate. Like at the end of the day if you're so upset that they killed off your favorite character and you start sending death threats then yeah, you don't have a grasp on your sanity.

It's this way with any fanatical fan of something, not just Star Wars. Have you been to DMBc at all? The people that act this way about 'Solo' are the equivalent of the people who have a fucking meltdown every time the band plays Smooth Rider or You and Me.

People grow up with something, become attached to it, and they feel a sense of ownership over it. They become so connected to it that they end up with a warped perspective that this thing that they have invested so much in belongs to them, and when that entity changes or moves in a direction that doesn't fir their definition of what that thing "should be," they react emotionally to it. The Star Wars fanatics might bitch to high heaven about Solo and diluting the franchise and whatever else, but they just keep showing up anyway. Just like the DMB fans that keep going to shows year after year despite how much they complain about the quality of said shows.

Hell, DMB is a pretty good parallel - the original Big 3/LWS era is like the original trilogy - it set the standard and is basically universally loved by the fan base. The Everyday/Stand Up era is like the prequels - widely panned "what the fuck were they thinking?" period. Then the Big Whiskey/AFTW/Come Tomorrow is like the new generation TFA/TLJ/R1/Solo era.

Some people are capable of understanding that it's just some silly movies, or it's just a band. You may like it, you may not, it's not the end of the world either way. Some aren't!

I get why you would go the way you're thinking. And I do think the prequels are shit and was an Everyday hater until Stand Up made me realize that Everyday is good pop music done by the wrong band and Stand Up was bad pop music done by the wrong band.

But that being said the comparisons are pretty apt because you have people who HATE the prequels but then people who grew up with them and actually like them better than some other SW movies.

But then you have folks who rank Rogue One second behind Empire (which is crazy). If someone was to rank like Big Whiskey second behind BTCS I would question their sanity.

Totally. And I mean, of course they're not *exactly* parallel but the way the hardcore fanbases react to things is pretty close. Like my nephews love the prequels movies while I can't even sit through Phantom Menace or Clones at all. (ROTS is marginally better for me but Hayden Christensen still makes it pretty unbearable. )

But they grew up with those and that's what they were introduced to, so it makes sense. Just like someone who's first exposure to DMB was say, The Space Between or American Baby has a totally different take on this compared to me, who wanted to fling myself out of a window the first time I heard 'I Did It.'

Apparently Lucas's vision for the sequel trilogy centered around midichlorians.

would've been really tough to pull off, and I have zero faith that GL could have done it properly. But it would be interesting to see a really good sci-fi writer tackle it in the form of a book.

I haven't seen too many #NOTMYDMB comments or any of the band members shutting down their social media accounts because of backlash yet so we have a ways to go.

I do follow Fonz but he still is on there battling back against his haters. And the comments he receives aren't personal attacks on his looks or his playing.

watched last night. meh. it was pretty pointless, color by numbers. Glover as Lando was outstanding.

I backread, but I'm not worried about the continuity stuff brought up in here. Han accidentally funding the rebel alliance was more "IDGAF I'm leaving with Qu'ira" than doing it because he believed in their cause. In terms of how he and Lando left things, there's roughly 10 years between Solo and ANH. I kinda just assume they have other experiences with each other along the way

Much like Dave, I don't think he's out of touch so much as he just doesn't care. He had the story in his head that HE wanted to tell, and he isn't interested in serving what the fans want.

Whatever you think of TFA/TLJ/R1/Solo....we should all be thankful he finally decided to let go of it when Disney backed that dump truck full of money up to his house.

I'm curious as to what could have been done with the Prequels if other people directed them instead of George like he wanted. George was surrounded by a bunch of "Yes Men" who just agreed with his every decision. Now if someone else was in the directors chair that doesn't necessarily mean that the script would have been any different. Maybe George would have said "these things need to take place" and someone else could have fleshed them out or had better dialogue. But it might have at least gotten better performances out of the actors.
