Local Musicians

Hey All!

I've been a musician for years and after a few year hiatus and a recent move to Providence, I'm back at it. I've always regretted not pursuing a career in music, and with my wife recently completing grad school and my recent unhappiness in my job, I've decided that at 35 it's not too late and want to begin the pursuit again. I'm still debating going back to school, and if so what I'll go back for. Either education or audio production. In the meantime I'm working on writing more, practicing more, recording more and performing again. It's not easy, especially when you move to an already active music scene and don't know anyone, and you're working a day job. But I've been meeting some great people at the local open mics around me and trying to support the local acts around town when they have shows. I know there's a musician forum, but let's face it, maybe 5 people check that section once a month. I see threads for new bands to check out and new albums to listen to, so I thought it would be cool for the other active musicians on the site to share what we "local musicians" have been working on and maybe gain a little exposure. I hope this thread is alright here in nDMBc and if not, my apologies. It's not my intention to grovel for new listeners, but just a chance to support some local talent that haven't "made it big" and are looking to get feedback on what's sounding good and maybe what we can work on.

Looking forward to hearing some of your music and maybe some of the music from your area. This is not a thread solely for music acts. If there's a local band in your area you want to share, please do!

Here are the links to my SoundCloud, YouTube and Facebook pages I hope you enjoy, and I'm always open to feedback.

Nice tunes man. I'm a songwriter too, released an EP two years ago and just finished recording my first full length record. Took about 14 months to record (between work, grad school, etc.), and I'm just about to start the mixing process with Matt Boynton who mixed Kurt Vile's "Wakin'" and "Smoke Ring," so I'm pretty stoked on that. Definitely trying to make a go of it in the NYC music scene. Just formed a band and we're going to start playing gigs next month. It really is crucial to just meet people in the local music community, never know who you'll come into contact with. Happy playing.

I dig this thread! Always down to hear new music. Word of advice, I wouldn't recommend going to school for audio production unless you know absolutely nothing and have no access to live music venues with experienced audio engineers who would be willing to show you the ropes. Otherwise it's just a waste of money. Source: live sound engineer who spent way too much money learning what I could have learned for free had I been patient.

    Anyways, here's my contribution:

    https://soundcloud.com/sethward79

On a related subject, I think it would be cool to get a bunch of musically inclined ants together to record a song or two. Obviously nothing too complex but could be fun.

Thanks for the advice. Definitely noted, and thanks for following me on Soundcloud. I'd be curious to get your opinion on how my recordings sound (we could talk via PM). I did them all myself with no schooling and very little resources. I've never been happy with how most of them come out, but I just want to get some music out there. Question, is there a difference between Audio Production and Music Technology? Some schools list one and others list both. Not sure the difference.

Dug your stuff on Soundcloud. Many Years is great. It has a very McCartney feel to it (which I dig). My other favorite is Everything is Alright.

I'd definitely be down to get in on an Ants "band" project. That could be really fun.

    Thanks!

That C Major Light Instrumental is really cool. Some cool stuff on your page. You should incorporate your guitar work with the electronic music!

I'm pretty psyched. I think the last official gig I played was fall of 2012, so it's exciting to see dates being added to the calendar.

Thanks to everyone that's shared some music so far!

I play, but I don't have anything recorded. My best friend on the other hand, his SC is filled with his different projects (EDM and Pop Punk), so I'm going to fluff it out on here, and post his SC if anyone would like to give it a listen.

Nice going KTH! Let us know how they go. Any plans to record either video or audio?

I may try and record a little. I've been pretty hard at work recording some stuff at home. Trying to put together an "albums worth" of material so I can start sharing that at shows.

My band has started to dive into my original material and I'm pretty psyched. It's not the best quality, but my cousin (lead guitarist) got a GoPro for Christmas, so we took a video of one of my newest tunes from last night's practice. Looking forward to working on more original material this year!

Thanks for checking it out! We don't. We have a Facebook page, but we're in a transition phase at the moment. Had a few changes in personnel over the course of the past year since the band's inception and decided to regroup and change direction. I've been writing a lot more lately and we've decided to put more focus on some of the original material. Just got a new bass player and are working on a name change as well. Once we get our sh*t together I'll probably work on a website. For now if any interest in my original stuff you can check out my SoundCloud page.

I found my violin buried in storage and finally got it back from being fixed/tuned. Digging playing it again once in a while. Was surprised at how much I retained despite the 8 year gap. I've only been back at it a week and am belting out all of the classics with ease...Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Absolutely slaying right now.

That's how it was for me when I picked the drums back up. Hadn't actively played the drums in quite some time until a friend of mine sold me his electric kit for wicked cheap a couple years ago. It took me about a year to get remotely close to where I was 10-15 years ago.

Hey all! So I'm a bit out of touch these days with what's happening in the current music scene. Since getting into vinyl I've spent the last couple years in the past. My band typically plays music from the 60s up into the 00s, but the last decade, and more so the last couple years, is not represented well in our set. We've been working on more originals, but we have a show next week at our better venue we play (cover song type show), and the last time we played there some of the younger crowd asked if we new anything newer. I'm looking for suggestions of songs that are more current and can keep the party going. Just a few to fill out the set. Keep in mind our sound is acoustic driven rock (we still play fun songs like "Africa" by Toto), so something more in that range would be best. Much appreciated!

I play solo acoustic and have some of the same issues in terms of not being all that connected to current music, here are a few things that have gone over well ..

    1. In the Blood - John Mayer
    2. Tennessee Whiskey - Chris Stapleton
    3. Ed Sheeran in general, from what I've heard I can picture your band killing it on some of his uptempo songs
    4. I love playing Ray Lamontagne's version of Crazy, it's not all that new but most people get into it and it's not music from the 60's
    5. Bon Iver

Thanks! Really looking forward to getting some more shows catering to original music, but hey, there's money in covers. You're North Shore aren't you? If you feel like taking a quick hike up to Nashua next Friday to see us at The Peddler's Daughter, we'll be there!

I am, that might happen! One way or another I'll definitely be seeing you guys at some point, your cousin is a good dude.

Awesome, that would be great! Thanks. It's pretty cool to see his progression. I moved out here from OH in 2004 when I was 23 and he was only 15. I remember dropping him off for lessons a couple times. He's like another brother to me, and to see the way he plays now and to finally be playing together as adults has been really freaking cool.

We recently changed the name of the band and have updated our current pages. We are now The Stone Road Band...Landstanders sucked to say to a crowded room over a muffled mic, and apparently one of those Urban Dictionaries offshoots gives it a pretty awful meaning involving a man and a goat :

We don't have much on the SoundCloud page beyond 2 originals (one of which I have not shared - "Brutus" - Check it out!) and a cover of Toto's Africa. Slowly but surely! Thanks to anyone that checks this stuff out. I know local music doesn't always make much of a blip on people's radars, so it's appreciated, and any feedback is welcomed.
