This is probably unpopular, but there are so many amazing live releases from certain classic years, that I would much rather get a unique newer show released, because it at least is something different. Something I love about DMB is how much they have evolved as a live band over 30 years. I find myself listening to a lot of clips from the Gorge this year, because it was basically a Dave and Friends show. It was a musical Dave Matthews experience I have never heard before...for better or for worse.

When would y’all say Boyd was at his best? Honestly there isn’t a ton to choose from, but what was his prime? Sometimes I honestly wonder if it was early/mid 90s. Sometimes I hear things from early 2000s, or even late 2000s and I think, maybe that’s it. There are exceptions in every period but just curious y’all’s thoughts

Boyd had a really cool talent where he was really great at his instrument every other Lunar Eclipse. There's really not a set year for when he was consistently good, it's really just a show by show, song by song crapshoot.

Whoever is selecting shows for the LT series and the Live At/In…. semi-series is doing an AMAZING job. They’re killing it. I’m going through my LT collection (I have all of them) and I love the show and set list diversity within it throughout the years! My only complaint is we have too many D&T selections….

i do too! I think it's a modern day Halloween. I'm fine with it closing shows or encores too on occasion. Think it's a great intro, great riff that builds into a crescendo at the end and the lyrics are top notch Modern Dave. Not 90's Dave. Post 2000.

I DON'T like it when they used it before two step, and then dave just sang the chorus of it again during the intro to two step. It was very redundant. I get he's trying to tell everyone that was where the idea for timebomb came from, but 2 tours of that was too much.

Agreed! Honestly, I like post 30 more than pre 30. Less predictable IMO. I still love 1-30, but think 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 40-48, 50- now are some of the best shows the band has put out. Outside of LIVE AT releases. I would say 47 is the likely my favorite LT to date. The songs Bela Fleck plays on are just mind blowing. What he does on Seek Up alone could be my all time favorite moment to this point.

I think Early days Boyd like 92-2000 is prime. If you go listen to some tapes from that time period or DMBlive shows. I think 92/93 he's the most engaged/creative of any time in his tenure. Tons of energy, he sings a lot more, he's really weaving into the songs rather than just soloing, and there are a few off notes here and there but sounds more like losing himself in passion as opposed to not caring or being gone.


I think he lost something right around the time of Everyday when he switched to the Electric violin. It definitely changed his playing and overall tone. I think for a big band sound it was easier to mix/blend in, but just not the same.

I also think the success thing coincided with whatever drugs or issues he was dealing with. That must have started in the early -mid 2000s is my guess. Losing Roi pushed it over the edge and I think he wanted out after that, but just didn't want to let the fans or band down.

But yes, DDTW stands out as especially bad, although WWYS stands out as especially good

Ya he had 24 hours to practice for 40 songs at MSG with one of his idols. There's an article floating around that interviews him. Dave called him the day before and said Coffin was out with Covid could he fill in? Once he said yes it was on! Dave gave him NOTHING to go off. He started practicing to the studio versions of songs and then showed up and RR said the songs weren't exactly like that anymore anyways. RR said Dave literally could pick any song from the catalog and they wouldn't know until about 3 hours before the show. I guess he and RR rehearsed what RR assumed could be on sets. But a handful of songs Ben had only heard once or twice before they went on stage.

IMO. It was pretty ridiculous of Dave to play Madmans eyes which had only been played once or twice at the time and expect a sub to nail it.

I would bet if you ask Ben, he would just say he did the best he could with what he was given. He doesn't know all the songs. Doesn't know all the parts. And the parts are different on any given night anyways.

I just don't get the love for DYR. It's so cheesy. I didn't enjoy much of Come Tomorrow, and DYR is bottom half of that album for me. Not even close to Big 3 quality

B&BB & VITR are the two best CT songs imo.

There is an Everyday level album that you can piece together among SU, BW, AFTW, & CT. But I emphasize "piece together".

Do You Remember reminds me of the NoDPL protests that Dave visited. That's a good thing for me. A definite summer time song.
