I think Early days Boyd like 92-2000 is prime. If you go listen to some tapes from that time period or DMBlive shows. I think 92/93 he's the most engaged/creative of any time in his tenure. Tons of energy, he sings a lot more, he's really weaving into the songs rather than just soloing, and there are a few off notes here and there but sounds more like losing himself in passion as opposed to not caring or being gone.
I think he lost something right around the time of Everyday when he switched to the Electric violin. It definitely changed his playing and overall tone. I think for a big band sound it was easier to mix/blend in, but just not the same.
I also think the success thing coincided with whatever drugs or issues he was dealing with. That must have started in the early -mid 2000s is my guess. Losing Roi pushed it over the edge and I think he wanted out after that, but just didn't want to let the fans or band down.
