DMB is the Star Wars of the Music World

Upon five or six listens of the new Dave Matthews Band album, Come Tomorrow, it's more apparent now than ever before:

Dave Matthews Band is the Star Wars of the music world.

Three great albums made a long time ago, in a decade far, far away.

UTTAD, crash, BTCS = Original Trilogy
Everyday = The Phantom Menace
Busted Stuff = Doesn't Count as a DMB Album
Stand Up = Attack of the Clones
Big Whiskey = Revenge of the Sith
Away With The World = Force Awakens
Come Tomorrow = Last Jedi

While they've written a couple of good tunes here or there since the Original Trilogy, just like with Star Wars, you really just wished they wouldn't have messed with anything and just let the original 3 live on their own. Having to sith through "She", "Gaucho", "Dive In", "Dreamgirl", & "Angel" is not worth the couple of good tunes that we've gotten over the years.

But just like Star Wars, Dave Matthews Band is a huge cash cow that consistently brings in the dough no matter what they do... so...

On a more positive note: At least there's longer stretches of time in-between each aural abomination than the rapid-fire pace that they're shoving these cinematic catastrophes down our throats.

Excellent analysis, although I disagree with you on the cost-benefit part (so I would take a load of sub-par songs for the beauty that is IOY, Shotgun, etc). Why would you give those songs up for a load of songs you can just skip?

You joke, but both things had multiple producers/directors and someone (Boyd) got shitcanned during the making of it...so I think you’re closer here.

    This thread has my approval.

DMB is still better than SW because at least Dave hasn't desecrated the Big Three with "Special Editions" by adding clumsy electric guitars to UTTAD, a children's chorale to Crash, or thin, canned "Batson beats" to BTCS...and then erasing the original multitrack tapes...

I bought the original theatrical release of Star Wars in 2006, at Circuit City. It does, in fact, exist.

So, what is tLWS, what is Some Devil? Why is Busted Stuff not a DMB album?

Actually, I don't even like Star Wars... never mind.

Re: DMB is the Star Wars of the Music World

You can't just ignore Busted Stuff just because it doesn't fit with your analogy!

    I'd probably do

    Star Wars - UTTAD
Return of the Jedi - Crash
    Empire - BTCS
    Phantom Menace - Everyday
    Rogue One - Busted Stuff
The Clone Wars TV Series - Some Devil
Attack of the Clones - Stand Up
Revenge of the Sith - BWGGK
    Force Awakens - AFTW
    Solo - Come Tomorrow

UTTAD was the first, the jaw dropping original, that got us all hooked.
Crash is the 3rd best of the original
BTCS is the magnum opus, the best of the best
Everyday is the highly anticipated, why the fuck did they do that let down that is made better over time by the ones following it sucking so much
Busted Stuff is the not-quite-the-original level but still really good, doesn't get everything right but it still feels like the thing we loved
Some Devil is the really good product that is separate from the original creators, but still a quality and enjoyable addition
Stand Up is the "holy shit this is awful why did they even....is that an ass crack? Why the fuck did they do this shit? THIS DIALOGUE IS SO BAD WHAT THE FUCK! I WOULD DIG A HOLE TO CHINA UNLESS OF COURSE I WAS THERE? (I don't like sand, it gets everywhere) FUCKING HELL THIS IS AWFUL"
Big Whiskey is the "well, it's better than the 2 before it. Not great, but it's better. It had a couple really good parts to it"
Away from the World is attempt to mimic the original that is serviceable but ultimately falls flat
Come Tomorrow is the tumultuous, "do we really need this one?" product that involves someone getting fired and the original plan changing midway through, which somehow ends up being ok despite it all

Where is The Last Jedi? Technically, it's all of them because every single one of them causes fans to be divided between those who abandon ship and lose their minds over how terrible the album was and how it ruined everything that came before, and those who really enjoy what was made, despite the different directions taken.

Yes, in a 4x3 letterbox, "screw you" bonus disc release of the utmost, subpar quality possible. All of which was 100% on purpose by George Lucas to simply shut fans up. He doesn't want you to watch it, and he made the inclusion of it so awful that you should not want to watch it. I've got it, and I can barely sit through 10 minutes of it.

That said, the original, unaltered trilogy DOES exist in a pristine, 4K scan that a lot of time and money went into. They just haven't released it, and depending on how this FOX deal pans out... possibly never will. You didn't hear that from me though.

    This is a horrible take.

you essentially matched the release order of DMB albums to Star Wars movies.

If you the thing you loved about the Original Trilogy was blaster fire, space ships, big lasers shooting at planets and a quick flash of a lightsaber then yeah, ok.

I like the hypothesis OP, but it needs to be complete. Therefore Busted Stuff is the Star Wars Holiday Special; Sure its still Luke and the gang, its technically still Star Wars. But we all know something about it doesn't quite set right. It isn't Star Wars-Star Wars.

How is not widely accepted here that tLWS is not part of a Big 4? We have the album, the mp3's, streaming if you use local files. Why?

Hey guy, I like Angel. I’ve never seen it live, and despise versions I’ve heard with the lovely ladies (execept for roi). Lyrics are far from great, but parts are at least somewhat clever with the card game thing. I think the music, while kind of boring, is catchy and relaxing. Carry on, just thought it needed some love

Where is The Last Jedi? Technically, it's all of them because every single one of them causes fans to be divided between those who abandon ship and lose their minds over how terrible the album was and how it ruined everything that came before, and those who really enjoy what was made, despite the different directions taken.
There's a lot of ways to go with this analogy.

    Yes. Exactly.

I'm okay with this. Busted Stuff doesn't count in my book because tLWS is just soooo much better. I can't even listen to Busted Stuff. I can listen to WAYG, YNK, and Grey Street on their own sometimes. But that's it. Everything else just makes me want to pop in the tLWS again. And knowing DMB, Busted Stuff would have never been made and those songs would have gone the way of the Dodo if they hadn't leaked online and fans preferred them more. And now that we have those Karmageddon Masters, we don't need Busted Stuff at all.

I consider them part of the Big 4, but I know that the music world does not, so I just argue on their turf.

I disagree. TLJ wasn't an abomination. It was just a messy Star Wars film with prequel-esque garbage seeping in. At least it took chances and was ultimately interesting (which TFA was not).
