Re: College Football Season

As long as Ohio St beats Michigan's ass next year (again), I really don't care what else happens to the team - I am ready to write it off.

Abe, I forgot what is JT's record against Michgain?

JT got hit with a 10.1 violation. Which is the worst for a person, the program missed the 2 big ones. Ther eare not too many people to survive a 10.1 violation.

We'll see, but we all know what really happened.

EDIT: I think JT should be suspended for the first 11 games of the season.

Nah. It's the NCAA. I'd be shocked if they ever ruled something straightforward by the book.

10.1 violations are straightforward. This will only end when I have JT's resignation speech as my new ringtone!!

I guess that's true. Head coach is the face of the program so you may be right. I think I'm more suggesting that as this is an isolated incident involving a specific number of individuals it's not a "program issue". It isn't a violation that permeated through the athletic department which is where the "lack of institutional control" and similar issues are found.

The University did miss the 2 big ones, but JT got hit with the hardest individual charge.

All this coming out in the heat of recruting is awful for them too.

Yea. Tressel could get suspended for the year. I think that's going to be the big punishment. I think 5 games wont be enough. Who knows though.

Wen if Tressel gets suspended for the year I don't think he'll resign or OSU will fire him.resigning would Just be avoiding the punishment and OSU has made it abundantly clear they want him around. As a fan, I don't think there is any coachn the country that could bring OSU out of this mess as good as I think Tressel could.

In levying the unethical conduct charge, the NCAA writes that Tressel "failed to deport himself in accordance with the honesty and integrity normally associated with the conduct and administration of intercollegiate athletics." If that language sounds familiar, that's because it's extremely similar to that written about ex-Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl in a Notice of Allegations the school received last February. The school dismissed Pearl before the case reached the Committee.

I think of all the articles outthere this morning, this one spells everything out the best. Takes a pretty decent view from all sides.

He's been Bruce Pearl'd. This will probably end with his resignation, depending on how long he wants to fight it for.

That's a pretty good article. I always wonder about these 10.1 firings though. How many of these people were fired as a result of the NCAA punishments levied against the coaches? As far as I can tell, the vast majority of these coaches are fired prior to the NCAA even getting a chance to rule on the cases. In other words, is there any precedence on how the NCAA punishes these violations as opposed to the offending coachs' schools? I'm curious, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

I have looked around a bit, and all I can find is that when a 10.1 violation comes, a coach leaves. Most recent was Pearl, and he never got to the NCAA. tOSU at 1 point is going to have to step in front of this and say we did not know(the NCAA agrees) what was going on and can not stand for this here. JT is a great coach, but he is going to take down the school if it goes further. tOSU has to say that the school is bigger than any 1 man, and move on.

You might be right. I'm really curious to find something because people have been throwing out arbitrary numbers (myself included) as to how long Tressel should be suspended. I don't think there is any documented precedence that indicates what punishment 10.1 violations warrant in the NCAA's eyes. It's just "bad" and "coaches getting fired and resigning". I mean, for all we know the NCAA could view five games as sufficient. They've never done anything to indicate that it wouldn't be. I have to keep digging.

In September 2010, Tressel even signed a mandatory and rather routine Ohio State compliance form which clearly and simply asks if he the coach has knowledge of any NCAA violations. By signing and dating it, he said that he did not.

Wonder if the school knew something was going on, and wanted to cover their ass. If this is something he signs every year, no biggie. If this was the 1st time, could mean bigger things

Its almost a guarantee that its something he has to sign on an annual basis.

As for the comparisons to Bruce Pearl, you can't do it. Pearl was nowhere near as successful as Tressel has been.

So the NCAA is looking at win/loss records? Or are you saying the go easier on big programs? Or, beacuse Bruce was a 1st time offender, and this is a repeat offender?

The school will always protect itself, before the coach. That is why they have coaches sign letters like that. That why all of us with HR dept's go to sexual harrasment classes every year and sign those letters.

I'm not speaking in regards to the NCAA at all. I'm speaking to those who are saying he'll get the Bruce Pearl treatment (aka fired by the university). The simple fact is, they're not comparable. Pearl was decent with flashes of great. On the other hand, Tressel has been towards the top of the game his entire time at OSU.

Postseason champ. Postseason. I know, as a Michigan fan, you have forgotten about that stuff. The simple fact is that Tressel is tied for the most BCS appearances and most BCS wins.

You compare BP and JT because both have been charged with 10.1 violations. There has only been 1 coach to survive this. TN did not even want to go to the NCAA with BP at the school. Did you read the report yet? Nothing there says JT did anything positive. The school is clear, the students are clear, they are coming after JT hard. If tOSU wanted JT gone all ready they would have fired him. But read the hundreds of articles out there, and Robert Smith(former bucknut) on ESPN all saying this is going the same place for JT.

You make no sense. Especially with the bolded. The bolded = duh. Are you forgetting that Tennessee fired Pearl? Pearl didn't get let go by the NCAA.

Maybe that can be his defense in AUG.

JT: Well I did know that the players were selling things to drug dealers.
NCAA: Well did you tell anyone about this at tOSU?
JT: DO you know how many games I have won?
NCAA: Why didn't you tell anyone about the emails you got?
JT: Do you see how many times I have been to a BCS game?
NCAA: Why did you lie about knowing about these violations?
JT: I really wish you would just look at how many games I have won.

I know TN fired BP, duh. They did not fire him when all the allogations started, they fired him instead of facing the 10.1 violation with him. You seem to think this is just about finished, when it is only starting. We have till AUG till the hearing, and than Oct/Nov for the results. They are looking at JT as a repeat offender, what do you think they want from him? A 10.1 violation has an almost perfect record of leaving the coach out of a job. You can not defend this. There is no source you could quote me ANYWHERE that says JT is not up F'd. You can show your blinded passion, and thats great. I can back up EVERYTHING I have said today with 3-4 sources.
