As I was reading through the thread, I was surprised it took until page 4 to be mentioned. Beautiful, haunting cover.

I would also add the majority of the first Led Zeppelin album.

I've always liked Jack's Mannequin cover of "American Girl" better

Some of these have been mentioned before but here's my favs.

    Covers that are better:

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help from my Friends (Beatles)
moe. - In a Big Country (Big Country) <----love this one
Bloodhound Gang - Fire Water Burn (Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three) (not exactly a cover, but the same chorus)
Ben Folds - Bitches Aint Shit (Dre)

Covers that are good or equally as good:

Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide (Stevie Nicks)
Obadiah Parker - Hey Ya (Outkast)
Channel 4 News Team - Afternoon Delight (Starland Vocal Band)
Ben Harper - Strawberry Fields (Beatles)
Robert Randolph - Jesus is Just Alright (Doobie Bros.)
    Tool - No Quarter (Zeppelin)
311 - Love Song (The Cure)

I'll second Tim Reynolds "All You Need Is Love", that's quite good.

I also like Matt Nathanson's "Starfish and Coffee" (Prince), and Ben Folds Five "Twin Falls, Idaho" (Built To Spill)

Bolded are not even close. Cocker's version of "With a Little Help..." is nauseating.

Harper's 'Strawberry Fields' is not bad, but can't hold a candle to the original.

Really? I've always loved Cocker's version. I might be in the minority hear, but I feel that more people associate that song with him than the Beatles. I've talked to plenty of people that had never connected the dots in realizing that it was originally a Beatles song.

I don't think Harper's cover is better by any means, just a good version.

I'm pretty sure I'm probably the minority - most people I know love his version. I just really don't like Joe Cocker in general. And I hate the female back-up singers on it.

    Agreed on Harper.

One I was just listening to last night that I love:

Joe Bonamassa's version of Tom Waits' 'Jockey Full of Bourbon'.

This is the one thing I hated about Cocker's version from Woodstock. They had dudes singing the back up vocals and it was much, much worse than the female back up singers.
