Answered this question in May of 2014. Here it is June of 2021 and I still have this vehicle. Just over 164,000 miles on it.

I'm a huge subaru person so I say yay. We've owned only subarus and I've never had a mechanical problem yet. 7 years on my wife's 2011 legacy, 6 years on my 2004 wrx, 15 years on my STi that granted doesn't get driven much, 4 years on my BRZ, and 2 currently on my 2013 wrx. Never had one problem bigger than one wheel bearing needed to be replaced.

I've been driving Volkswagens in some shape or form since the 90's, but I just got a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and I'm enjoying driving it around so far
I'm looking forward to hitting some trails when I head up north in July, and maybe even get a beach pass for RI

My wife has a Forrester. Not impressed, has had oil leak problems the last few years no one seems to know how to fix. Will stick with Toyota in the future.

I had a 14' JKUR for a couple years and I only really drove it all over the desert out here (Mojave and Death Valley areas and a bit of the Sierra trails) camping and just exploring. REALLY loved it but wasn't a good a long term solution as I needed more room and range for where I was using it. Wound up with a bit of an amateur expedition Tundra for that purpose now. I miss parking the jeep but don't miss 75MPH on the freeways too and from where we left the roads. =p Great vehicles for what they are though and if I had more room, I'd have probably kept it.

    JKUR in DV

On topic, right now I'm doing my short (10 mile) commute in a pretty heavily modified miata of all things. I bought it last year as basically a street legal track car and just love the stupid thing. It's like driving a go cart and just induces a grin all the time. Also have a corvette that is just miserable on the street but fun on the track; it's murder on tires and brakes upkeep though hence miata. A venza is the normal thing that might have gained 1000 miles on the odo since 2019.

This last few years are the first time in my life I haven't had both a honda car (usually accords) of some kind and a toyota truck (from hilux/pick up days through tacos and now a tundra). I am boring as fuck with my appliance vehicles but it's sure nice never having any concerns with them at all.

I’m 16 months into my first Subaru (‘20 Forrester) and I love it. Outside of the thin windshield which I just replaced and the thin paint it’s been great!

Re: What kinda car are you driving?

Let's talk about how crazy the car market is & how buying a vehicle from out of state can be a challenge.

Situation: Bought a vehicle just before pandemic (Dec 19). In March of 2021, vehicle was declared a total loss due to a tornado. Very low miles (less than 15k)....insurance company paid me MORE than what I actually paid for the vehicle. Many vehicles are on 2-6 month back orders, with many dealerships adding 10% / 10k + all of the stupid dealer ad ons; needed a vehicle asap, and there were less than 10 used ones available that fit color, year and trim level. One of the online vehicle sites had one, at a great price, so bought the vehicle online. Vehicle was in Florida (I'm in Texas), and was shipped to us 2-3 weeks later. Slightly used (about 10k miles), and the purchase price - while still a great comparative deal - was above what a new one would cost (dealer also threw in a bunch of add ons that I didn't want or need, but I had to take them or I wouldn't get the vehicle). So here's the thing - I've had the vehicle for 2 months - and I still have temporary tags (I do a monthly temp registration) and no sign when I am getting them. And for shits and giggles, I went to the same online site that I bought the car from 2 months ago - and they offered me 8k more than their selling price, and 3k more than my drive off price (including taxes, transport and dealer ad ons).

That is crazy. Will you sell it back to them? One thing I wish would come from all this is that car companies eliminate dealers all together. Just order the car online from the company and have it delivered. No haggling, no BS.

Not selling - was too difficult to find. I agree with you about how this could change the industry - why even have dealerships if they aren't going to compete?

Just passed 100k miles, still running p good. We picked it the year after getting married, prior to kids but with them in mind and it's been great now that we have 2 car seats, and there's a third row or plenty of room for shit when those seats are down. My favorite feature is still the pano sunroof which is bigger than almost any other vehicle's that I've seen.

Don't know when I'll want a new ride but it'll definitely be a similar sized SUV. I like the Highlander, but I'm also interested in electric so maybe by the time I'm ready there'll be more choices.
Almost exactly a year since this post. My fuckin car went and died on me. Engine shit the bed out of the blue, 2 hours from home no less. Was a whole damn ordeal and I was forced to buy a new ride on short notice. So I had about a week to research and test drive (while working, while my wife had covid...) I was still eyeing a bunch of Highlanders and I liked one I drove. Then one day I went to a dealer that had both a Highlander and a Chevy Traverse that I'd read was good and similar, so figured I'd go see it and just rule it out. I ended up liking it a lot so I got it the next day.

It's pretty nice. Traded my beautiful giant pano roof for two regular sunroofs but got a few more tech upgrades. Still have a third row and even more room than the Fe. It's white and I blacked out the gold Chevy bowties on the front and back as well as all the chrome badges around it. Gonna do the wheels black soon too. Looks pretty sharp.

I’m pretty brand/platform loyal at this stage in life. Though I am eyeing different electric offerings amongst the big Europeans.

    New or used?

New Highlanders are rare to catch on a lot.

    My Traverse is used. 2019.

I was only looking at used. I did go to a Toyota dealership just to see if a new one would be worth my while but yeah they said they had none.

I was only looking at used. I did go to a Toyota dealership just to see if a new one would be worth my while but yeah they said they had none.
Toyotas - at least in my area - you cannot preorder. You can pre-buy an allocated vehicle - dealerships get a list of what vehicles they are getting 2-4 months beforehand. Most dealerships are then adding 3-10k mark up on MSRP. But, with no vehicles on lots, you can't even test drive. The vehicle I just bought, I found a used dealership who bought one new from a dealership in Montana, selling it used for 7k over sticker.....which I considered, but wasn't quite the trim wanted.

Glad you found something you wanted, and if something doesn't change, I see people holding on to cars a lot longer.

People are already holding onto cars much longer than pre-pandemic. It's having huge effects in the automotive industry.

Yeah, I considered switching to Toyota but couldn’t handle the wait. Stuck with GM… previous 3 trucks were Silverados. Went with a GMC Sierra Elevation. Not upset with my decision.

Still rocking the 07 camry and 16 forester. Love both, but both are getting up there in miles. I have both paid off and will keep them until no longer financially feasible to.

This is me. 2014 Prius and want a Crosstrek Sport but it’s soooooo nice not having to worry about a car payment.
