    Re: MLB Strike?

We can put some math to a real life case of Bryce Harper & Nationals

If Harper resigns with the Nationals & Nats are unable to move Strasburg they will hit the luxury tax threshold. If they sign Harper for $33 AAV they would be somewhere between $18 - 24 million above luxury tax which means they would have to pay somewhere between $6 million - $10 million in luxury tax for 2018.

The high number is if they don't move Stras. If they resign Harper, Eaton comes off the books and Nats are most likely paying $6 - $7 extra in luxury tax

When you break it down this way it's really not that bad, but the kicker is maintaining the current roster is where the trampoline multipliers come in

For Nats to maintain competitiveness with Harper all else equal 2020 & beyond, the jump in luxury tax jumps to $10 - $15 for 2020 & would rise going forward

I just saw something today on Twitter maybe that the WS last year cost Boston $12M in penalties.

A drop in the bucket for a title.

I really don't see what the MLB players are upset about(if in fact they are upset) in terms of salary. Sounds like owners have gotten smart about these 10 year contracts.

Yes both sides. Players want to be paid for past performance. Too many teams don’t spend money. Not good

Harper was offered 10 years, 300 million....would have been one of the largest contracts in major sports history.

Yeah definitely. It's going to hurt too. I was 10 in 1994 and having no baseball sucked.

Personally, I love it. I hate having to pay for some guy's 35-38 if you want his 28-32. That sucks and is bad for business. But if I was a player, I would obviously hate it. Owners are getting smart. As a Yankees fan, I would love to be successful with the homegrown talent we have. Make some obvious big deals but do it with a strong core from your system.

The way CC Sabathia put it was that the players are pissed that the multi-year contracts aren't there anymore. and the ones that are, are for "pennies". All of the older players are pissed that they aren't being signed anymore and have to wait until Jan or Feb to sign a 1 year deal when three years ago, that same guy would have gotten a 4/25 year deal.
