Woodstock 50

https://www.iheart.com/content/2019-...h-anniversary/

Just came across this and wondering if anyone has heard about it or thinking about going. Does the venue having camping? DMB plays here, don’t they? so is it in a shed? Was kind of hoping for a multi stage camping event.

DMB hasn't played Bethel since 2013 I think, but are rumored to return this year.

I regret not going to the 25th anniversary back in 94. I was a teenager and the rents said HELLLLL NO! Should’ve rebelled and just went. No way I’ll go to the 50th or be caught dead at any festival for that matter

The 25th was right before my 13th birthday, and I grew up in Columbus, OH so that was out of the question. My grandfather passed away the week before and we drove out to MA for his funeral. On the way back we left the day Woodstock was ending, so we got stuck in all sorts of nasty traffic on the way back to OH.

I've never done a festival before. Closest thing to it was Gorge 16. I would like to cross it off the bucket list if I can, but will need more details about this one.

Not sure why, but this surprises the shit out of me.

Mostly b/c you're a musician and seem to enjoy different types of music... also, they are kind of hard to avoid. Even though I've grown to hate them, I've been to a few. I think the main difference is that the number of people completely wasted is at least 10 times greater at a festival.

Yeah, its a shed. I saw DMB there once. Super nice venue, but I'll always remember it being the most boring DMB show I ever saw. I try not to get too critical of their sets these days, but this one was ZZzzZZ. http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.as...056659&tid=106

edit: In any case, excited to see what they'll do to celebrate this year.

You and me both. It was just one of those things lost to time. I don't think I ever had the funds to do something like Bonnaroo in college, and then once festivals started becoming the thing to do my priorities started changing. Engagement ring or music festival? Wedding or music festival? Gorge was my top bucket list priority and that ended up being a very solid choice.

That's a little disappointing. Kind of surprised to see the 50th anniversary of one of the most famous music festivals getting a bit of a low end celebration. With festivals being what they are these days you'd think they would have gone all out.

so apparently there is a "woodstock 50" taking place at watkins glen that weekend...and a "woodstock golden anniversary" event happening at bethel, less than 3 hours away, that same weekend

there's no way both of those events happen at the same time...just no way

I just learned this in the Phish thread as well - berman schooled me. I had only heard of the Bethel event and he was like naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah bro, WG is putting one on too.

"August 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the seminal Woodstock Festival, which is rumored to see Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters headline, and the town of Bethel, New York is set on making this year's installment of the music affair one to remember.

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts recently announced the three-day event, which is intent on "celebrating the golden anniversary at the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival."
Renamed the Bethel Woods Music & Culture Festival, the affair is set to take place August 16 - 19 and feature "live performances from prominent and emerging artists spanning multiple genres and decades, and TED-style talks from leading futurists and retro-tech experts."

So, aside from the fact that the article I posted has the venue itself stating it is hosting a 3 day music festival at their venue, which someone confirmed is a shed venue, and is being billed as a 50th anniversary celebration of the Woodstock festival, I have no reason to make assumptions that a 50th anniversary festival is being held at Bethel Woods...?

What I meant by "low end celebration" was a three day event at a shed venue sounds a little underwhelming compared to a festival out in the open that can accommodate a 6 figure capacity for he anniversary of a festival that did exactly that.

I'm just seeing the information about Michael Lang's festival that will supposedly be held on the same weekend at Watkins Glen. There's mention of it at the end of the article I posted but it didn't paint it in a big light. So my assumption is based on the facts stated in the article I posted and rumored big name acts like Pearl Jam, Foo fighters and Phish.

yes-we hashed that out a while ago

I still do not believe that there will be competing woodstock music festivals 3 hours away from each other.

Yeah the Bethel event sounds a bit more sure of itself than the other one, but we'll see. If Watkins Glen is a thing that happens then that would be more on par with what I would have expected/hoped to see.

Their set in 99 is one of my favorite performances from the band. That's my favorite #41, and there's always been something about that Two Step and Watchtower.

From my experience small festivals like Festival at the Farm are fun, bigger festivals like Levitate which isn't even that big suuuuuuck, neither are anything like The Gorge. The problem with bigger festivals is you are constantly walking against a wall of drunk people, can rarely get a good spot, it's just a hot frustrating experience. The smaller festivals are more like hanging out in a big back yard party, can get closer, walk wherever you want and easily, etc.

The Bethel event can't use the Woodstock name, hence the Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival (however all the imagery harkens back to the original)... it's being promoted by Live Nation and already has everything rolling.

The Watkins Glen event can use the Woodstock name as Michael Lang owns it, he just came out recently stating he's putting on an event there the same weekend as the Bethel event but nobody in Schuyler County has any idea about it. No permits have been issued, and nobody has started any of the official business.

So one has the infrastructure in place, the promotion using the foremost promoter in the industry (LiveNation), and acts already signed to play. The other has a guy saying things that has next to nothing in place.

    Hmmmmmm...

As Graham said yesterday, I'm hard pressed to believe these two events will occur simultaneously 3hrs apart from each other.

But they have to have some acts already booked for the WG one or they wouldnt have announced. They made it sound like tickets will be on sale by next month, so not much time left to just up and cancel.

Michael Lang "announced", Watkins Glen International has not. It's not listed in the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce events list, nor is it listed on the Watkins Glen International website. So again, Michael Lang said it's happening, the venue hasn't announced anything.

I have no horse in the race - I'm simply trying to say that Bethel had been officially announced (to the point of having it on their website, having a proper promoter, and having acts officially signed), then berman mentioned WG the other day and that's the first anybody had heard about it. There's a lot of confusion surrounding the whole thing in general and locally as well.

That's the other thing... it doesn't matter if and when Watkins Glen would hypothetically cancel if tickets for it are never available.

problem is the logistics of that if too many bands are booked as a whole, but youd think cooler heads would prevail and this would happen. But at the same time Lang has known about the other event for a long time and hasnt done shit about trying to reconcile and merge.

This whole thing is a mess and just reinforcing my lack of desire to attend.
