so, i never finished college. im going to be 24 in May, and im probably going to go back to SUNY Stony Brook to finish up my last couple years of school. thing is, i never had to take out any loans. any one have any advice as to how to go about this?

how long does the whole process take of actually being granted the loan, and would a college defer payment if the semester started while your loan application was being processed?

You'd definitely want the money before the semester started, I don't think the college is going to let you float by if the funds aren't secured before classes start. My college wouldn't even let you register for the next semester's classes if you weren't paid up

Citibank is great for student loans. Smart people work there, they are very nice and know how to keep records.

Definitely fill out the FASFA first though and see if you qualify for any federal loans. They have a much lower interest rate than private loans through somewhere like Citibank

My Citibank loan interest rate is 2.65%. My federal is 2.75% booyah, grandma

when can you start consolidating your loans? do you have to wait til you start paying them (6 mos after graduation), or can you do it before then??? anyone?

You can do it right after you get out of college, but if you consolidate you lose your 6 month grace period of not having to pay anything

Once you consolodate, you usually have to start paying then. It's a trade-off for a good interest rate, usually. I consolodated in June after I graduated, and for my 2.65% interest rate, the trade-off was that I had to start paying in August.

it just depends on the loan company, i think.

FAFSA

It's due by June the 1st I think. Get all your paperwork ready and do it online. It's annoying. You've got to redo it every school year.

Yeah, get the process started around month 5 of your grace period and you should be fine

Yeah, the only reason you would consolidate sooner is to lock in a lower interest rate if they are going to go up.
