Sorry, I was just saying what I personally use.
I guess I wasn't really looking at it in terms of a recommendation (although if you have the means and like zooms, then you'll probably never regret getting the 24-70).
For the budget, I'd definitely go for primes. Get like the cheaper 35mm available and then either the 50mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.8. For just walking around, especially while traveling where weight of the lens makes a huge difference in how much "fun" you have, then primes are great!
My wife and I are hoping to someday take a trip to europe and just this morning I was trying to imagine what camera equipment I would bring. I think I decided I would have the most fun using just 3 lenses: 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, and the 85mm f/1.4. Maybe substitute the 35mm with something wider. You can't beat the optics and versatility of the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200, but for traveling/walk-around they are a little impractical.

I totally agree. I used both the 50mm and the 24-70mm in Seattle last summer as "walk-around" lenses and while I love the images I got with the 24-70mm, I had more "fun" with the 50mm. Like Matt said, prime lenses made me focus more on composition and the fact that the 50mm is so much lighter and so much less conspicuous (people tend to stare at you when you're walking around with lenses like the 24-70mm because they are so large) made it just more enjoyable to use. Again, the 50mm isn't for everything, like a landscape type picture, but it's good for most things that are immediately in front of you.
