The compression.. if you listen to the original mercy single .. it’s super open the song has room to breath.. it’s way more panned out .. the version in the album .. everything is smashed together in the middle of the space.. no room to breath.. it’s muddy and not super clear…

Belle belly sounds like they did 1 take on it and just called it good.. everything is dry and boring.. live it’s a good tune.. studio version needs some bells and whistles .. gloss..

The middle of the album is a boring run of gaucho, the riff, belly full, .. roof top has the same problem as belle nice..

Snow out use and drunken are really all I can handle on the album..I think it’s as close to a BTCS re do as we’re going to get.. but it’s still a poor production.. they both would have benefited from some extra instrumentation and a bit more shine… they sound like demos

Yeah, my impression on listening to the first couple versions was that Dave, especially during the debut, was purposefully going for a somewhat scratchy, halting voice. Kind of like he thought it may match the sense of what the song means to him.

Maybe it's been mentioned, but I do remember that in the long interview someone did with Lillywhite on BTCS a few years ago Lillywhite said they actually scrapped his mix for AFTW and used another one - all basically really last minute - and that's why he doesn't like the finished product, he likes his original mix (he didn't go into details, the decision seemed to have come from the record company, not the band)

Always liked that take better. Seemingly small thing, but the delivery of "don't let any fool" elevates that chorus melody and provides a lot more punch.

Whoa how have I not heard this? Where did it come from? What are the differences—chorus lyric, maybe guitar and horns somehow a little brighter? This is great, if this is the original mix I wish I could hear the whole album like it. That album satisfied me when it came out, then faded fast, but I don’t think it’s so bad now. I find as I near 20 years of fandom I like all their studio stuff more than I used to and I am a little less passionate about the songs I like or dislike, I just want to listen to it all. Lots of good memories and cool sounds even with their worst albums.

Seven has such a great groove. If it wasn’t beaten to death live, I think folks would appreciate it more. The lyrics are… meh. But other than that, I’ve always liked the unique song.

Yeah I remember expecting Belly Belly to be this massive glistening studio production after hearing and loving the live version. What a missed opportunity for a great studio track and a massive single. The studio version sounds so bare and flat, so disappointing. I could be very wrong about this but I remember distinctly when part of Belly Belly was played during some sporting event on TV (can’t remember which) and the production sounded much bigger than what we ended up getting on the final album. I could be wrong about this though

I’m sure there is a better mix if lillywhite also wasn’t happy in the end. However if Dave wanted it to sound like big whiskey I much rather the version we got of it. There’s layers and I can actually hear everything going on.


And people bash the album seeking perfection which I get but the collection of songs on that album vs anything post BS isn’t even close. Complete tracks with solid performances and actual musicianship all around. SOLOS and FILLS TOO!! IMAGINE THAT! But seriously what solos do for an album is amazing. I will die on this hill that AFTW is the type of work we need more of from this band not less.

The fans bashing AFTW pretty much gave the band all reason to never work hard again because the bashing is completely exaggerated. Sure we can nitpick here and there but comparing this album to standup and CT isn’t even close. I personally think it’s way way better than whiskey too.

Don’t get me wrong I like big whiskey and I think it’s solid. But it always felt like majority of it was written for high school kids. I personally believe little red bird, beach ball, and write a song are better songs than 90% of the album and would be excited to hear any of these live. Why I am, LITHOG and APie are only others I’d like hearing. Squirm has always disappointed me. Chorus just doesn’t do it for me at all. In fact it kills it for me. Love the rest of it even the drum beat part but could never get into singing the chorus which actually annoys me now.

The high school kid remark is odd feeling I get from the album and I probably will relate that to the overall bright production and maybe some of the subject matter. Blows me away that it was really their last really successful album but they also promoted the shit out of that one compared to the previous 2.

I agree with all this too. The Little Red Bird disc was better than the album itself. I don't hate BW, I just would rank it a little lower than AFTW. I wish Grux was a minute or two longer. Shake Me was disappointing after seeing the studio video. Funny is ok I could take or leave. Big fan of LITHOG, WIA, and Dive In, I like that run a lot. Spaceman is one of my least favorite DMB songs. Squirm I could take or leave as a studio cut, I do like it live. Pie is a great song one of my favorites on this album. Seven could take or leave. I do enjoy Time Bomb. Baby Blue is kind of boring but I can appreciate it's significance. You and Me is as meh as it gets.
