Gordon and Fonz are very different and both very talented... but Gordon just does so much more with his bass than stefan has. Its not only about in your face bass, he can be very technical too while also being bold and up front.

More instruments doesn’t equal better, but saxophone is my favorite instrument and DMB has that jazz to them that phish doesn’t, Phish has more progressive and funk roots. Which I love as well, don’t get me wrong, they’re great. And Genesis is one of my favorite bands which really influenced Phish. I said I prefer Treys style over Tims, but Tim is still a great guitar player. All the members of the Flecktones minus Futurman, are more talented at their respective instruments than the members in either Phish or DMB, and I was into Bela Fleck before I got into DMB (that’s actually how my brother converted me) so to me, DMB getting Coffin in their lineup is fucking awesome. He’s crazy good, especially with the Flecktones. Butch vs Page I can see how you’d take Page, but I’m a big Jazz guy and Butch brought the Jazz, that dude knows his stuff. Hard to argue the Stefan v Gordon comparison, I agree Mike is really good and probably has more versatility than Stefan, that’s tough for me. Okay, I’m done, sorry to beat the Phish v DMB horse

The above in bold is laughable to me. Way off base, and I really think maybe you don't play an instrument yourself if you have those opinions. I really love everyone mentioned, but come on. Mike Gordon is much more creative than Stefan and carries a much larger load of the music in his band. Much like Phil Lesh, Mike almost plays lead bass and fills even more than Phil Lesh did with the Dead.

Page is light years ahead of Butch. Yes, I think Butch could hang with Page with Jazz music, but what about all the other types of music that Page plays and is able to improve on? Butch couldn't do that.

Finally, when it comes to the electric guitar, Trey is a Jedi and Tim is loud and annoying playing common electric licks. I actually can't stand Tim on the electric guitar. In fact, with Boyd leaving, knowing that Tim will be even more featured on the electric guitar is why I am skipping my first DMB tour since 2000.

I do think that Tim is better acoustically than Trey though. Classically trained, Tim is best unplugged with an acoustic. I think he is very average at electric though (professionally speaking...obviously he is way better than me lol

I have faith that Mayer and Co could get them over the hump. Plus, the Dead's catalog is over 250 songs deep when you include covers. I am sure they could dust off some stuff. I agree that it would be a stretch for them though. Maybe 6-7 show run would be better haha

It's a lot easier when it's your own catalog to do those shows than if you're basically a glorified cover band with a couple old guys.

Don't get butt hurt because I posted something with actual content rather than just saying someone's opinion is wrong. The claims made in that post were crazy and I could only conclude that one would have to not be a musician themselves to form those opinions, or be extremely defensive. Which I get as I was a bit defensive in my original response.

Look, I love the Dave Matthews Band. I was listening to #41 for LS the other night and I believe that is as perfect as music can get. They are my favorite band of all time.

All of that said, there has been a significant drop off in quality recently which Phish has not seen. In addition, I think everyone in DMB is great, but I could name a lot more musicians than the members of Phish that are individually better at some of these positions (Keys, Bass and electric guitar) than the members of DMB.

by far thats not even a question. But yeah, I do play bass, played electric for 10 years before switching to upright. I played in the jazz band at my college in Gainesville FL. The transition from electric to upright is way harder than some would think, And I've never seen Gordon play an upright, which Stefan not only plays, but is what he originally started on back when he was a wee one. I never attacked anyone, just stating my opinions, you sir insulted me, thanks.
