Re: You think Dave writes some corny lyrics?

Exactly. Apples to oranges

"The above in bold is laughable to me. Way off base, and I really think maybe you don't play an instrument yourself if you have those opinions. I really love everyone mentioned, but come on. Mike Gordon is much more creative than Stefan and carries a much larger load of the music in his band. Much like Phil Lesh, Mike almost plays lead bass and fills even more than Phil Lesh did with the Dead."

Which is one of several reasons why this comment is ridiculous

Phish isnt a jazz fusion band.

Noone is arguing these other musicians arent great or super talented. I dont think anyone would even argue if the original post was "I like x more than phish", but that wasnt the point trying to be made.

Not my intentions. As I said I got a bit defensive as well. I have played for about 15 years. I hear the music differently than you I guess. You were just so sure about Stefan > Mike and that is not something I have ever heard some say without trolling. So for me it was a new opinion that I couldn't imagine one having.

Edit: I will also apologize for any disrespect. Normally my approach to these threads is to go after people hating on anything because I find the thought of it absurd when talking about music. No reason to hate.

You seem to imply being classically trained automatically makes someone a better musician. I dont think thats the case at all.

Like whatever you want, its fine, but trying to start X is more talented than X arguments is only going to devolve conversation.

    I love to rank trees!

Pine trees are my favorite, but red woods looks pretty awesome. I also like weeping willows a lot.

Butch Taylor tops Page, he’s a trained Jazz pianist who is way underrated. Carter tops Fishman by a mile. Dave’s voice is not even comparable to anyone in phishs, almost to an objective level. Tim is on par with Trey on the electric, I prefer Treys style, but Tim is really good as well. And Stefan writes better bass lines than Gordon. Gordon is more in your face, slap style, but as a bass player myself, I take Stefan all day. That’s all opinion of course, but I stand by it. Plus dmb has a violin, and LeRoi, who’s sax playing is just beautiful. Now with Coffin in the band, he’s arguably more talented than anyone out of both bands. DMB is actually pouring with talent, and Dave’s song writing is superb and is a much better lyricist than Tom Marshall. Not bashing Phish, they’re a good band and I really like them, especially their more technical songs like It’s Ice, and YEM

I mean, this was also my original reaction to that post. Everyone can have their opinion, I just strongly disagree with that one, but respect the listeners right to it.

Slightly off topic, but why has Dave never guested with Phish when Trey has guested with DMB a few times?

An acoustic guitar would get pretty lost in phish’s music and Dave isn’t much of an improv guy outside of scatting

This is actually false as the band has guested with Phish a couple times in the 90s. There's a famous version of YEM that turned into a Somewhere of the Rainbow jam as well as a version of Watchtower.

What bothers me about Phish are the vocals. Nearly makes my ears bleed. However I do appreciate their talents. Their jams are sweet, unfortunately the terrible voice of Trey ruins it for me.

Once you move past the lyrics completely you can tolerate it, it’s so far down the line of importance for them, but it’s a hard hurdle to get over. Took me some time, so I get it

I keep listening to them in small tidbits every once in a while to try to get into them. I try to expand my music horizon beyond DMB for times when I get "Daved out" as I call it. Doesn't happen often though. I don't venture much from John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Pink Floyd if I need to switch it up.

Some of the first songs that hooked me:

    Timber
    It’s Ice
    Character Zero
    Slave to the traffic light
    Backwards down the number line
    Chalk Dust Torture
    Stash
    Harry Hood
    Punch you in the eye
    Wolfmans brother

A live one and Ventura releases I’d suggest too.

I’ve only gotten into them in the last two and a half years really but they very quickly became a top 3 favorite band ever.

All good calls from LastPig, I'll add Limb by Limb to that list. Actually really solid lyrics and one of the first songs that hooked me

But let's stop this comparison. I think Dave, even weighed down with Seven's and Shake Me's is an unbelievable lyricist. He takes the cake in this era of music, for me...there are masterpieces (Stone, Spoon, Warehouse) love songs (Crush, Crash) social stands (Cry Freedom, Gator Pie) darkness (Captain, BEF) and feel goods (Billies, Everyday). He's been playing with house money since tLWS and no debate will change my mind.

Trey and Phish aren't even on the same planet. Way more about the music. Purposely quirky lyrics that help shape the soundscape they're going for. That's not to completely disregard the lyrics Tom, Trey and Mike put out, because they do have their share of poetic and brilliant pieces. It's just that their sound takes precedent over the lyrics usually.

So for me, it's far different when DM tosses another cheeseball line our way. I expect more. Phish can get away with it, because I don't hold them to the same standard.

I like DMB. I like Phish. It'd be great if some phans weren't so pretentious. It'd be great if some DMB folks would stop trying to compare
    Really well stated.
