Here's a pic I took the other day...the mom of the group that lives in our yard. I love seeing them everyday, they don't even run anymore when they see people. It's awesome.

Ok guys, I need some good thoughts! I tried like hell to get hired on at this place http://www.theoutsideworld.net, but never heard anything, so I took another local part time job (which I love!)....well the other day, the guy finally calls me in for an interview, which is Tuesday. Now, I'm hoping to work weekends only since I have a pretty sweet local job-assistant manager in a brand new specialty toy store (I left the medical field for good!). I really really want to get this other job too, especially for a kickass discount on gear. Please keep me in your fingers crossed for me on Tuesday!

i am taking a rock climbing class right now for school. I like it, but I would rather just hike, or backpacking.

also there are trips that we can take through the school. there is a backpacking trip to pictured rocks, michigan. i want to go there but it is full right now.

I was wanting to know if anyone out there backpacks or could give me some ideas for a place to go backpacking or hiking.

Are you going to be thru hiking the entire AT at one time? I'd need to know that first.....how much gear you would need depends on how much cu ft. you would need in a pack....

EDIT: Also, are you going to be hiking alone or in a group? Gear can be split with everyone so you're not stuck carrying everything...

The plan is to do the entire trail at once. It is my hiking buddy and me and that is it....right now I have a osprey atmos 50...I am pretty lightweight as far as gear goes. I am just not sure how to go about setting up a BIG thru hike...like the entire at for example.

Atmos 50? Is that a weeklong pack? 'Cause I've got the atmos 35 and it's just a small weekender...I'm looking at the new arc'teryx pack for weeklong trips.

My buddy has been on a 2 month long thru hike with something similar to the 50 in size....they are big enough, with thru hiking its all about limiting your equipment to the bare minimum.

Yeah, I'm really having trouble deciding how much space to purchase as far as my pack is concerned. We will be carrying a tent(which we can split up), cooking equipment, sleeping pads...pretty much the whole nine. So I was thinking about 4500 cu in. or less..

I'm not too keen about mens packs, but if it's you and one other person, and you're lightpacking it, I'd say about a 3500 or 4000cu ft pack. Plan on getting supplies in trail towns about every 4-5 days. You must definately have some type of water purification, the UV handheld wand is the best, but you can buy cheaper (but bigger) filters. I wouldn't even bother with the tablets, it doesn't kill everything and the last thing you want is Giardia in the middle of the woods. Plan on 2 pairs of boots. Get the smallest camp stove, ethanol fuel based is the best way to go for a thru hike. Most people make boxes up of food and supplies and have them sent to stores and post offices along the entire AT so you won't have to keep alot of money on hand, or if you can't find something in the stores. Plan on leaving in March, you have to allow enough time to make it to Mt. Katadhin in Maine (the end of the AT) before Baxter State Park closes in mid October due to the snow. Definately get the bundle of maps and the current data book for the AT, available in the AT store on their website. Get a good first aid kit, don't forget to include moleskin for the awful blisters you will get. I'd recommend hiking poles, I got a midgrade set from REI that are lightweight and shocklite. You will need them to get up some of the tricky parts. Anything else you can pretty much do as you want. Just ask away if you have anymore questions.

Thanks for the info......what do you know about the sterapin? I have heard they are great, but the only thing that scares me is the battery power on the trail.
