Re: Lawncare/Landscape Thread

I have the Ryobi as well (it has the trimmer, and edger attachments). I love it as well.

Edging with a trimmer just takes getting the hang of it. It's not difficult at all.

Yea, i edge with my gas trimmer and i have no issues at all. Also, no issue with the gas getting to the engine when i hold it sideways, this is first time i heard that, might of just been a salesman trying to get you to buy a battery trimmer?

I have a gas trimmer (4-stroke Honda) and I was using it to edge before I got an actual edger. It would cut out after a while because it wasn't getting gas when I was holding it at the angle to edge. Maybe it's just my trimmer, but either way, it wasn't intended to be used for edging.

Is there a certain winter fertilizer that anyone recommends?

I use Scotts winterguard, you're just looking for a high dosage of nitrogen before you get first frost. I usually apply this the weekend before Thanksgiving as part of my final mow process.

My fall plan is usually overseed in early September, milo in mid October, winterguard end of November. Seems to be a good plan for my lawn (i'm in south jersey).

Just lots of Milorganite. It's the biggest fertilizing of the year. For my cool season grass, I put down 1.5 lbs of N/1000 square feet for the last fall fertilizing. My fertilizing schedule looks like this based on research I read a while back:

Early Spring 0.56 lbs of N/1000
    Spring 0.86 lbs of N/1000
    Summer 0.86 lbs of N/1000
Early Autumn 1.0 lbs of N/1000
    Autumn 1.5 lbs of N/1000

I didn't think a slow release N such as Milo was recommended as your winter fert

I'm not sure. I've had great results using Mio as a winterizing fert.

This has about everything you could want to know about fertilizers:

    https://extension.psu.edu/turfgrass-...grass-managers

Here is a quote that is relevant to your question:

"Slow-release nitrogen sources, such as natural organics and IBDU, are ideal for late fall applications mostly because they are not as likely to leach as quick-release sources."

One thing I really think is beneficial for giving the lawn a good boost ahead of the first frost is sticking my fucking dick in it, really helps to loosen the soil just below the top 1-2" and also is a good direct injector of solid proteins and other nutrients

Here's my mow from yesterday. Probably my second to last mow of the year. Glad I got it in because we're getting rain until Saturday here.

Love the curved double stripes. The Timemaster doesn't stripe worth shit. I definitely need a striper.

That's awesome! I was hoping to get a mow in this afternoon but the rain came early. Not supposed to rain again until the overnight hours but now the grass is wet with no hope of drying.

been really rainy/cool here the last week...hoping that helps the seed, its def helping the water bill. If we get a couple sunny days after this the new grass should blow up

Is the mid 40's too cold to mow the lawn? Rain Sunday and my new fence is being installed Monday. Really want to get one in this afternoon.

I mowed 2 weeks ago when it was 35 degrees because we were getting 7 inches of snow the next day and I needed to get the grass short for the last mow of the season. It was actually lightly snowing while I mowed.

If you aerate and overseed next year, I would recommend doing it much earlier. I seeded 9/15 and the results are fantastic.

Had aeration and ovverseeding done 2 weeks ago (for TN that seems about the right timing) and been really happy with the result. Got a nice mow in earlier today. Probably have another month of cutting before I can call it quits.

we just never got any good rain for the first 2 weeks, then we got a lot of rain, then it got cold as fuck...it's gonna be in the 60s this week, so hopefully the lawn blows up

i mean it looks thicker, but it's hard to tell...the bare spots aren't as full as I was hoping, so I cant imagine the thicker spots are much better
