If you can find a place!

What we have is the little bit of hall between the door to the garage and the downstairs half bath just long enough for a washer and dryer. It's also downstairs, with all the bedrooms upstairs, which I think is why I'm starting to hate laundry more than any other chore.

My last house the laundry was in the garage. It was such a pain in the ass.

Now it’s in a hall off the kitchen.

My laundry is in a small "hallway" off the kitchen leading to the garage (across from the powder room.)

I would kill to be able to move the laundry hookups into the garage so I could use the laundry space as a pantry.

    Laundry in the garage?!

    Jesus

I’m JK, obviously that’s a lot more practice in a place like Austin than it would be in the North East.

Has anyone had luck selling old kitchen appliances? Just purchased a new stainless steel set and feel like it's stupid to pay a company to come haul away a perfectly good dishwasher/oven/fridge/cook-top/microwave. I just put the entire set on Craigslist for $500 OBO, does anyone have any other suggestions or am I wasting my time?

Put old fridge in the garage for beer.

    The rest, yeah... sell it.

You should be able to get SOME money for them. Whether or not it's enough to make dealing with Craigslist morons worth it is another question.

You shouldn't have to pay anyone to haul them off though, if you decide not to bother with trying to sell them. Junk companies will come get them for free because they either refurb and sell them or they sell them for scrap. OR, you can put them out on the curb and put them up for free on Cl and someone will come get them. I've done both.

We don't really drink but I do love our garage fridge we ended up with in the last year. Like to stock up on meats at Costco so it's a great place for that, plus drinks, and plus extra space whenever we're having a party of some kind.

Yeah I tend to try Facebook first for selling most things. I feel better that it's usually a somewhat closed group and you can see people's profiles and whatnot, rather than anonymous randos on CL.

Seller left a beer fridge in the garage, keeping that one

Best buy charges $14.99/appliance to take out the old appliances so it's not horrible, but that's roughly $100 that seems silly to pay.

I'm not on Facebook so that isn't an option put appreciate the feedback.

Nothing wrong with a 2nd beer fridge.

I have french doors that lead on to my deck. Both need to be replaced but probably not at the same time or by the same person. Does it matter which I do first?

Why not replace them at the same time? Seems counterintuitive to pay two people to do two projects on two separate occasions, when you can just knock it all out at once. Plus it would be far less inconvenient to you to have it all done in a matter of a few hours.

Yeah... also confused by that? If you need to replace them both, replace the whole thing (including the jamb). You're never going to find just the door that's going to fit properly anyway.

By doors, I meant the whole thing down to the frame of the house. In my experience, jobs get done better by people that do that specific thing for a living. I want the deck done by someone who does decks every day and I want the door installed by someone who installs doors every day. The deck and doors that are being replaced were built/installed by the same person. Now I am replacing them.

oooooh, oh... I got it now. I thought you were talking about replacing each of the French doors separately. Didn't realize you were talking about the doors and the deck. I'm clearly slow today... carry on.

However, lots of dudes that do doors also do decks. I know my dad has always done both regularly. Actually, it's pretty much all he does nowadays (and windows).

Oh, I thought you meant the two doors that make up the French door. "Both need to be replaced" in that context is confusing. Definitely did not infer that you also need to replace your deck

I don't know, man. Most carpenters are pretty versatile and can handle these sorts of things. Building a deck is, at its core, one of the easier carpentry jobs you can do. It's labor intensive and expensive, but fairly straightforward. I would just ask around to see if people can do both jobs at the same time. If the French doors are a replacement in kind, then it should be fairly easy, as well. Neither of the things you need are super complicated, by any stretch.

That's just the way I read it... brain haze. But also, you'd be surprised at how dumb some people are when it comes to construction. Dad tells me some good stories all the time.

With all due respect it was very poorly worded and two people interpreted that as your question.

Nevertheless, you'd do well to hire someone who can just do both projects for you all at once. Doesn't make sense to pay two people's labor. And the all-in price for both projects by one guy will almost undoubtedly be cheaper than hiring two people for two jobs.

If you are going to do them separately though, I would probably go deck first. That way any rot under the door can be addressed.

However, in a perfect world, I would do it in this order:

    Remove deck
    Replace door
    Build deck

We're actually ramping up to do a similar project ourselves in about 4-6 weeks. We have a very old, very small, very bad deck right now. It's in such bad shape that I'm scared every time I go out to grill something

We're going to be putting in a slider to replace two windows which will serve as the new deck access, and eliminate a door in the kitchen that goes to the current deck. I'll try to take some before/after pics as the project progresses. It's been on our to-do list ever since we moved in, so we're pretty pumped to be able to take care of it. Goal is to have everything wrapped up by the time our daughter's first birthday rolls around (6/17) so we can have the party at our house and outside on the new deck. We're essentially tripling it in size, so it's going to be pretty sweet when it's all said and done.

    Re: Home Repair/Remodel Thread

What's the reasoning behind eliminating the door from the kitchen to the deck? Seems like if you're going to be grilling out there, having immediate access from kitchen to deck like that would be beneficial.

Or is the new slider also going to be off the kitchen?
