Re: Ryley Walker To Release Lillywhite Sessions Cover Album

Ryley Walker is the man. Seeing him on Wednesday night here in Seattle. Also invited him and the band to come crash at my place after the show since they’ve been looking for places to stay. If he takes me up on it, I’ll gladly make breakfast for all in exchange for a cover or two.

Curious if Dave likes the take and will be there to check it out.

I could care less if they release it tbh. Release the shit in the vault and actually play the songs from tLWS and I would be happy.

This is so cool, and that Stereogum interview is great. I think he has a good perspective on how to approach this project. Her could have so easily just picked a handful of the hits and went at it. And that still would have been cool.
This is even cooler. Really looking forward to this!

Double dipping makes records harder. Like ice cream. The last part of Monkey Man are some of the best lyrics Dave ever wrote. Probably buy this still. Give $20 to the man who’s covering the man I’ve spent thousands on over the years.

Pretty stoked to hear the while album. After all, The Lillywhite Sessions is when I started listening to DMB and what got me so into them. 75+ shows later I'm still hanging around. Definitely getting a copy and will be going to see Ryley when he plays in Philly. Thanks for the post and a heads up about this. Pumped.

Don't like the cover; props to the drummer, though, for not trying to be Carter but doing a great job anyway
I do, however, hope this sort of sets out a campaign to properly release the sessions in 2020 (hopefully with Lillywhite on and behind the board)

I really don't get the hate. It's one of the more poignant patriotic songs I've come across.

How young and innocent our country is compared to the rest of the world. And how quickly that innocence crumbled post 9/11. How easily this freedom we take for granted could fall.

Fenway version of both AB and ABI have legitamently put tears on my cheeks. "Seems God doesn't smile down on anymore than this, so stay my American Baby" is an incredible improv outro from that night.

    Much love for ABI too

Never heard of this guy, but really can relate to why he digs this record. "Absurd," "bonkers"... all things I love about it, and why it's #1 for me (understand it's Fall, otherwise this could easily slip to #2 or #3, but still way up there for me. Love the sessions and always have). Agree Dave always seemed to be too hard on himself and takes himself too seriously. Have thought that for a long time.

Makes me wonder how many other sessions were shelved for being too "out there." There Are Ghosts?

One problem with this, and I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but tLWS isn't really an "album." Much more of a "these are various incomplete songs" than an "album."

That said, props to whomever is covering them

Surprised at the reactions here. I got that it’s a unique take but the musicianship is nothing short of exceptional. That alone should be appreciated. This isn’t somebody who learned a tune and slightly adjusted it to their own style. Ryley essentially broke it down and built it from scratch.

very stoked about this...just pre-ordered the vinyl and bought a ticket to his brooklyn show

it would've been interesting for him to have just released this without revealing the origin so overtly and seen if critics/indie folks would've given it props on song quality alone, only to find out later that the songs are dmb covers...but i suppose that's a practical impossibility given the strong crossover marketing tie-in and such

reminds me of when dirty projectors "covered" black flag's damaged in full (2007's rise above) but changed all of the songs to their own style

Now would be a good time for Norlander to do his LWS interview with Lillywhite as they alluded to in the last interview.

I mean, you’re welcome to take it how ever you want. But he just got finished ripping apart one of the most progressive songs Dave ever wrote (he clearly does not understand why that song is so great) so that only makes sense that he’d love Stand Up

I would say that what Ryley and his bassist play on the ripped apart version is more musically progressive than what Dave and Stefan brought on that track in the Lillywhite Sessions. For the record, I’ll take DMB’s Busted Stuff any time.

I’d prefer an alternative take for a cover song rather than someone putting their own sauce on the same steak. You could argue the Dave’s version of Watchtower doesn’t incorporate what makes Dylan’s original so great.

Well, if he clearly does not understand why the song is so great, then the criticism is also fair to Dave himself for shelving Monkey Man in the first place. And we know Dave loves Stand Up to some degree.

I’ve only heard Busted Stuff so far. I didn’t hear Monkey Man yet, just what he said about it. He said it’s horrible which is so far off. That’s what I meant by ripped it

Second bold, I absolutely agree. An artist doing a unique cover is fine, but it doesn’t mean Im gonna like it. Also, I hold the original LWS in such high regard, and kinda hate this newer “Indy” sound so it just makes me wanna vomit lol. I kind of can’t believe this is real. I know that’s selfish, it’s just how I feel about this special album. Like, out of all albums for someone to cover... uhhh

No, it’s not IF he clearly doesn’t. He doesn’t. He said so. He said it was horrible (which is funny to me, because he’s covering it) and said he loves Stand Up (which is fine I guess, to each their own).

Dave has admitted that Stand Up wasn’t a good album, but he did write it. But he also wrote Monkey Man. So he definetly saw its greatness at one point in time as well, although it was a much different period for him musically and mentally I believe.

Dave has admitted that Stand Up wasn’t a good album, but he did write it. But he also wrote Monkey Man. So he definetly saw its greatness at one point in time as well, although it was a much different period for him musically and mentally I believe.
No. Monkey Man has never been played live and didn't make a released album so I'm not sure why him recording it shows that he somehow saw "its greatness at one point."
