Re: New “Butterflies” Song just played @ Save the Stages

at first i thought it was a cover because it didn't sound like something dave would write, especially compared to the style of everything else he's written lately. i liked it though. definitely looking forward to hearing what the rest of the band adds to it.

I definitely got more of a “full band arrangement” vibe compared to Windows. Sounds good.

Agreed. Windows is a Dave solo tune. This one feels full band

I feel the opposite way. I like Do You Remember full band, just think it has been overplayed the last couple years. The horns add a subtle little touch to it live that I feel is missing when Dave plays it solo. I could see this being similar. As others mentioned though, I would love to see this turn into something very Jeff-centric live.

That 50’s vibe at the start of the verse threw me for a loop. Thought for sure it was a cover, until he got to the bridge, nope that’s Dave Matthews haha. How to tell good lyrics? When you can read them on their own without cringing. Well done, Dave. Love those lyrics and I’m loving Quarantine-Dave. It’s becoming evident to me that he and the band needed a break years ago. These two new tunes are a great step in the right direction.

Damn, this is solid. Love it when Dave shows off the chops. This could be tough with a solid Carter/Stefan groove and then let Jeff rip.

That's what I said in one of the responses last night in one of these threads. Then when we listened to it a second time, I got super slow LIOG kinda feel, but just from the intro guitar part/chords.

Lyrics aren't important to me, but I thought the lyric police would approve. I dig the music a ton.

But alas as so many others have stated on these boards, too bad Dave can no longer write good songs...

I know you keep saying this but I don't think I've seen many people saying this at all, it hasn't stuck out to me as a common theme on Ants. There are gripes about which songs have been included on albums at the expense of others and that kind of thing.

Here's a first pass at that riff. I am on trying to juggle a conference call with tabbing it so no pride of ownership here but I think it's close. Will revisit after work:

Actually I think the end is more like:

    -----------
    1-1-1-1-1--
    3-2-0------
    3-3-0-3-2--
    ------3-3--
    -----------

    Really?

I can't go to more than a coupla threads here where folks are talking about their music or shows w/o seeing a spate of posts about how:
    - He's not written any worth a damn since tLWS.
    - That a happy life and family have taken all the edge away.
    - How Ballard ruined him.
    - Then how Batson ruined the band.
    - How BW was their last great album, but still not a big "four" (or five) album
    - That AFtW is overrated hype and/or a disappointment despite work w/ Lillywhite again.
    - That Come Tomorrow is as bad an album as they've ever made.

And more. I know I'm not making this up because: I share none of these thoughts, don't hang anywhere else where folks talk about DMB (unless it's me), and while I don't care for either ED or SU they've not impacted my enjoyment of the material released between or after these albums.

I will acknowledge that these two new tunes have received near (but not complete) unanimous praise here, but people regularly still talk shit about the band's more "recent" output.

A lot of what you are posting here speaks to consistency in songwriting which anyone would have valid reason to point out, comparing his consistency in songwriting quality from the 90's - early 00's to the last 15 years shows a drastic drop off. Aside from Squirm I can't think of any songs that have an edge since the early 00's, no songs have been written that could close a main set or encore. The expectation that they are going to come up with the next Two Step is pretty far gone for most people but that doesn't mean he flat out can't write anymore.

Lying in the Hands of God
    Baby Blue
    Squirm
    Broken Things
    Drunken Soldier
    The Riff
    Snow Outside
    Sweet
    Again and Again
    Black and Blue Bird
    Do You Remember
    Here on Out
    Idea of You
    Samurai Cop
    Virginia in the Rain
    Bismarck
    Death on the High Seas
    Mother of Africa

All of these songs have been talked about positively by many Ants. I think the consistency is an issue which has been discussed a lot and range of emotion which is a huge factor when it comes to why DMB fans get hooked.

Old Dirt Hill + STJL + You & Me + Beach Ball + Eh Hee + Little Red Bird.

Aka, a song that Dave wrote that sounds like a song that Dave wrote

I fully realize this, but don't fully agree with it. Specifically the notion of not being able to write songs as good as he used to as well as the idea that there are certain songs that are acceptable/unacceptable as set or show closers. If I like the tune, I don't care where/when they play it.

woudl be nice if this represents some of the other stuff cooking, but we also felt this way in 2015 after black and blue bird on letterman.

Aside from Squirm I can't think of any songs that have an edge since the early 00's, no songs have been written that could close a main set or encore. The expectation that they are going to come up with the next Two Step is pretty far gone for most people but that doesn't mean he flat out can't write anymore.

Lying in the Hands of God
    Baby Blue
    Squirm
    Broken Things
    Drunken Soldier
    The Riff
    Snow Outside
    Sweet
    Again and Again
    Black and Blue Bird
    Do You Remember
    Here on Out
    Idea of You
    Samurai Cop
    Virginia in the Rain
    Bismarck
    Death on the High Seas
    Mother of Africa

All of these songs have been talked about positively by many Ants. I think the consistency is an issue which has been discussed a lot and range of emotion which is a huge factor when it comes to why DMB fans get hooked.

if you listen to studio two step and the early live performances of that song, it doesn't scream badass set closer either. the biggest difference between songs now and songs from 20+ years ago is that the band developed them. remember when big whiskey came out and everyone was hyped about how much jam potential that alligator pie had, that it could become the next jimi thing? what did the band do with that potential? they got rid of the short violin solo they briefly added in to it before practically forgetting about the song's existence all together.

there are a lot of good songs that could become great songs if they were given the same development that songs from 20 years ago got. whats the newest song to regularly break 10 minutes, LITHOG? how about a badass ending jam a la rapunzel and grey street? we havent gotten any new closer type songs because the band has been content with leaving the songs as written on the album instead of being inspired to let them evolve like they used to.

I just pray tim and rashawn don't f this song up full band. One of the great things about black and bluebird is when played live it's not a wall of sound song and instead allows the acoustic guitar to shine.

I agree with a lot of points here but the intro of the studio version of Two Step has been used in many sports related things as well as weddings because it sounds epic, every song I listed lacks that. You could theoretically jam out something like DYR and the song would be added to but not in the powerful way I was referring to, they could certainly come up with the next Jimi Thing type jam but I'm looking for something that has the edge they used to have. Alligator Pie could certainly turn into a big jam like Jimi Thing but the tone of the song doesn't naturally lead to Dave screaming his head off and the crowd erupting as used to be the case.

sure, the intro to two step is great, but a great beginning doesn't equal a great ending. drunken soldier wouldn't be a great closer because even though it has a great start, there's no oomph at the end. two step never had that ending oomph from the very beginning. it grew into that. they evolved the song into what it is today.

none of the new songs feel like they would have a closer feel, but they've also never been given the chance to evolve like two step did. they don't evolve songs, period, these days. forget about the next two step badass closer, what about even just the next grace or crush? they are both fairly mellow songs that evolved into more. outside of LITHOG, what other song has really done that in the last 10 years? they're never going to make a new closer when they can't even evolve mid-set songs.

I think Broken Things and Belly Belly Nice have potential as a good set/encore closer
