Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

Over the last month or so, I have grown a certain, definite fondness for "If I Had It All". Would love to hear it at a show next year, but it wouldn't at all be the same without piano, I'm afraid. Does anyone know where I can find a version of the song w/ Tim in the lineup? I'm interested to hear how the song sounds with Dave & Tim on guitars and no piano. Going by the DMBAlmanac, looks like they've only played it twice since Tim's been full time.

Was blessed enough to have been at Hershey for this. Truly my favorite version I've ever heard, and the most cohesive lyrically.

    Just a tremendous tune.
Extremely underplayed tune. Only caught it 3 times.

I've never caught Drive In, Drive Out.

DIDO and Last stop are the two songs that have escaped me that I really wish I could have seen.

It's a shame how underrated DIDO is. LT3 version is so fire.

I love Break Free. Not a fan of Dave playing an electric guitar pretty much ever but he gets a pass with this one. The guitar riff is so simple yet killer.

Such a shame that the one Break Free we have in the LT series has been altered from how it was actually performed live. Add to this that a more recent LT was a '06. Who knows when we get another shot at this song.

Joe Lawlor ruins every song he guests on. He's twice as loud as the already too loud Tim. His distorted screeching obnoxiously loud guitar destroys my eardrums.

Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

While jettisoning the 3rd verse of Grey Street is the worst, most inexplicable and seemingly permanent change DMB had made to one of their songs, a close second for me – which I never hear talked about – is Dave switching the 2nd and 3rd verses after the chorus's of The Stone. To me it really kills the way the song builds.

Verse 2 is: ...But if not I'll go, I will go a long way / Ah, from that fool's mistakes / And I'll forever pay / Oh run I will run and I'll be ok
Verse 3 is: ...But if not I'll go, I will go a long way / To bury the past / Oh I don't want to pay / How I wish this / To turn back the clock and do it over again

The verses build perfectly and, imo, the line "To bury the past" - especially the way Dave sings it - is the emotional death blow of the song which perfectly sets up the emotional release of the outro. Add to it that the band starts playing forte and Carter goes nuts after the second chorus so, when Dave sings the verses in the right order, the the "to bury the past" line just augments the impact of that line and that verse. But when Dave inverts those verses – which is apparently standard now – the line that comes after Carter's crescendo is "Ah-ah-ah from that fool's mistakes." It's ok, but jut so much weaker than the gut punch of "to bury the past." In my option, inverting the verses doesn't lyrically match the musical intensity at that moment.

Just compare the impact of the way it should be:
    Alpine 04: https://youtu.be/XUqmHRKQC2A?t=28m1s
    Gorge 02: https://youtu.be/lSsnQ9I-seI?t=13m41s
    Golden Gate Park: https://youtu.be/NTa8tLVoATg?t=4m47s

To the way it is now:
    West Palm Beach 10: https://youtu.be/uw9UpP8uVwk?t=4m1s

I just don't think the inverted order is nearly as impactful. Sorry for the rant, but this switch has bugged me a lot more than it probably should

While I love the song, it somehow has a Radiohead vibe to it, this might be true. I'm glad we have LT42 and it released with a real keyboard player on it.

Funny I'm on the exact opposite. However, whereas I don't really care if the verses are switched, I much prefer to hear Carter's break during the "aaaah..." part. Imo the "bury the past" line sort of gets lost in the drum break. Anyway, speaking of the Stone in the random thread - the lt41 version is so perfect. It definitely doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.

Always wondered if anybody noticed the verse switch in The Stone. Not sure what year it actually started happening consistently.

Dave probably just messed it up one night and never noticed, continued with the reversed verses.

Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

Didn't realize the Stone verse inversion wasn't really noticed. As best I could tell it happened in the mid 2000's. The links I included in my last post go through the end of 04 where Dave is singing it the "correct" way. At my show in July 05 (incidentally my first DMB show) they opened with Stone and Dave sang it correctly, but the WOTR version had the verses inverted. The song was only played once full band in 06 and a few times in 07, but I don't know offhand which way he sang them.

At my show in 08 he sang them inverted, which is also how he sang them on the Live in Rio release from the fall of that year. At SPAC 09 he sang them inverted as well and, as far as I know, has done so ever since. There are probably a few versions here and there where he flubs and goes back to the "correct" way, but the change seems more or less permanent now, just like the truncated Grey Street.

So best I can tell, the change started happening in 05 and was essentially permanent by 08/09. It's a little thing, but has always bugged me because Stone is arguably DMB's most flawless song musically and Dave's best lyrically, so inverting the verses had always irked me in the same way the GS omitted 3rd verse does.

Love of My Life is a fantastic song. I wonder why DMB never played it when Santana guests? I looks like Dave may have written it... If so, this is BTCS and LWS timeframe. Prime Dave. Wish they’d play it without Santana. Tim could fill in!

to all of this. It's a great song and the band could kill it with Tim.
