Re: New Song Debut at Farm Aid

I dig it.

Songs like this, Samurai Cop and Bismarck work for me. Just keep the trash like Plastic Girl away and I'm good.

People complaining of Dave sticking with the same theme is hilarious given the entire discography from 91-97 is centered around carpe diem.

Bismarck and Bob Law, unsurprisingly are my favorites out of this current pack. Maybe I'm just in a weird place with DMB. Mid 20's, no kids..I guess it's my problem.

I don't need every line to be deep and philosophical, but just for laughs...when was the last time Dave wrote a line that hit those marks? Hands of God?

That's a great point..I'm realizing this batch just doesn't resonate with me..not a bad song. Just not for me, right now

Haha this is such a solid rebuttal to that.

I for one am really digging the "Dad Rock" theme that these new tunes have. Keep 'em coming, Dave.

As a father of two young children the "Dad Rock vibe really resonates with me.

I'm not a dad and I can still dig the dad rock. Honestly, I'd rather have dad rock than no new music at all.

After first listen I think it sounds really good. Though it does feel unfinished to me, but I like whats there. Immediately gave me a Bismarck vibe which is probably my favorite of the new tunes we've gotten recently

Yeah it's my favourite I think since the 2006 songs. Exception possibly LITHOG. I'm not excited however for the rest of the band's involvement. I think with Tim, Carter and the horns it could go the way of all the last decade's music (which is both overplayed and simplistic - otherwise 'unnecessarily busy'). But I really, really like the song D&T.

I loved the lyrics, although I'm not sure how Dave comes up with them given his renowned dislike of the concept behind Pig (ie carpe diem)

For me it's a 80-85/100 song, D&T. Dunno how it'll translate to full band.

Cool song musically, but pretty bad lyrically IMO. No, not every song needs to be deep and philosophical. But does every new song need to fit this inane, trite "random patchwork of thoughts"/childhood nostalgia theme? It worked well with Black and Blue Bird, but I'm not sure how I feel about it here.

I'll wait to hear a full band performance before I make a final judgement, but as of now, Samurai Cop and Bismarck remain the best of the new songs.

    Lyrics are fairly easy...

    Do you
    remember
    when we
    were small
    Do you
    remember
    when we
    believed

There were bones in the river
    and ghosts in the attic
    Don't go up there alone
    The enemy's coming
    We should take cover
Cause the odds are against us
    odds are against us

    Do you
    remember
    when we
    were small
    Do you
    remember
    when we
    made believe

    We're sinking in quicksand
There's no rope to save you
    When you're on your own
    (panning?) for treasure
    making love in the backseat
    We're all on our own
    and the enemy's coming
    We should take cover
But the odds are against us
    The odds are against us

    Do you
    remember
    when we
    would scream

    The color of sunshine
    The color of laughter
    It's the color of blood
    The color of water
    Rising up like an ocean
    And pouring all over us
    The enemy's coming
    we should take cover
    The odds are against us

    Do you
    remember
    when we
    would scream out loud

    Come out and get me
    (Death can be coming?)
Won't you come out and play
    Come out and get me
    Shivering
    We should take cover
All the odds are against us
    The color of water
    And the color of summer
    Is pouring all over us

Really like it. That bridge was a cool change. Looking forward to full band and how Carter/Stefan groove with or around it.
