Re: Dogs Are The Damn Best

30 days after saying goodbye to our Sheltie, we had to say goodbye to our Yorkie, who has been with us for 17 years of our 18 year relationship. We got him when we first moved in together.
The house just feels so empty now.

My boy Trace just turned 10 and has is paying for his total disregard for his body when he was younger. He's got a touch of arthritis on his back left leg that has been slowing him down on our walks, and I wasn't too sure how he was going to be at the beach this year.
He seemed pretty happy when he arrived, and on the the first morning there he started whining at around 4:30. On our daily walks he's mostly poking around behind me, but he was right out in front on the way to the beach.
After the amount of drinking we usually do while we are there it's a little tough to get out of bed.
But it's worth it in the end

    Trace on the beach

    Damn dude... sorry to hear.

I know that empty house feeling. Went through it about a year ago. It's not easy... we were just there for each other when we had our moments of breaking down. We kept taking walks every day like we did if we still had our pups. Also did an airbnb just to get out of our own house for a few days.

For a reason I haven’t yet figured out, we decided to get a 3rd dog last week.

Meet Charlotte, our Bernese mountain puppy. She’s about 3 months.

Great looking crew! My boy Riff (yellow lab) came from a breeder that also breeds Bernese mountain dogs. When we went to pick him up there was another dog there that was clearly from an accidental litter between a berner and a lab. He was huuuuuge and had the tricolor but mostly looked like a lab. I wanted to take him home.

Fack, I love Berner puppies. I think I'm gonna get one in the future, be interested to hear what you're experience is vs your labs.

    Thanks!

I bet the mix was adorable!

I wanted a chocolate lab. My son wanted an axolotl.
    Somehow we got a Berner.

She’s an adorable ball of fluff right now.

Our yellow “lab” is a mix of lab, Rottweiler, golden, beagle, and boxer.
Grace, the black, is full lab.

We’ve only had her a week.
But so far, she loves cuddles and is pretty low key.
Our black lab takes the retrieving part pretty serious, so I’m used to that for play time and Charlotte is more a ‘take the ball and chew it’ kind of puppy.

The only downside of her is their life expectancy is pretty short (6-8 years).

Oh wow… your yellow looks full lab and I thought the black was a mix bc she looked smaller. So hard to tell sometimes!

If all goes well we’ll be adding a chocolate this fall.

    I know! She’s tiny. And she’s a year, so she’s done growing.
She is definitely the smallest lab we’ve had (and probably smallest I’ve met). And her parents were decent size.

Jack was supposed to be a yellow lab. His pink nose clued is in early that he wasn’t a full lab. I did his dna over Christmas and confirmed.

Hope all goes well for so you can add your chocolate! They are my favorite dogs.

What a nice looking pack you have there.
I have a couple of friends that have a BMD and they all have an awesome temperament.

Our youngest dog (still 8 years old. Our oldest is 9) tore her right ACL back in February. My wife and I went to Chicago for Labor Day and boarded the pups at the vet. Shortly after she got home yesterday, she noticed she was limping on the left leg, and immediately feared for the worst.

Just got home from the vet, and sure enough she was diagnosed with a torn ACL on her left side. Made it through the vet visit without crying, but I’m just sitting in my living room now just sobbing. We got fortunate with the last surgery in terms of expenses (the timing was around my work bonus and us both qualifying for the stimulus payments) so we didn’t have to pay much out of pocket, but this time, to have another surgery, that’s 4 grand that we’ve got to figure out.

She’s only 15 pounds, which seems insane to me that a dog so little would have so many problems like this, but here we are. Sorry to be such a bummer and bump this thread after a month, but I figured my fellow dog parents would understand.

Sorry to hear that. Health problems are always brutal especially when they are close together. Will your vet do a payment plan? Mine did when my one dog had surgery but it’s not the usual.

Damn that's awful. Do you have care credit? It might help with that second chunk. Good luck

Re: Dogs Are The Damn Best

I broke from our normal routine of a morning walk because my son left his laptop at home and I had to drive to his school to drop it off. My dog has literally be sitting next to me staring at me for an hour wondering why the hell she didn't get her walk today and when we are actually going.
