Good luck, that sounds like alot of work.

I did something similar in my backyard after an addition was put on and I had to replant grass several times. I don't know the weather in CT but in OH it's best to wait to plant until September. I could not keep the seed wet enough to germinate thru August.

I have some more spots in my yard from ground stumps and I am waiting till fall to lay dirt, plant and cover with straw to save me from watering twice a day and still not having much luck.

I think this has been my problem, so this year I'm taking a break from any more grass seed. I put a ton down early in the year and now have some patches. But, it seems like I have the same issue. For example, this week has been balls out hot in Chicago and I'm gone for ten hours of the day that are the most intense in terms of heat. A couple of times I came home and the dirt was hard as concrete and the seed was just laying on top. There's no good way to keep it wet long enough.

    So yeah, Steng. Good luck!

Thanks, bros. Luckily the back yard is pretty shaded so I'm hoping that'll save the seed from drying up too much. I wake up pretty early in the mornings so I can also get the sprinkler going and my wife can shut it off before she leaves for work a couple hours later. I'm hoping I can at least get some solid growth in a majority of the yard and work on the spots in the seasons to come. I'm just sick of looking at dirt in the back yard, it's been like a month since we got it regraded and I've just been too damn busy to take care of it until Saturday.

I cannot stand seeing the dirt patches in my yard. There's just no need for them!!

Speaking of which, I'm going to go water. It's another hot day here today.

I've been watering my garden and landscape twice a day, aside from a few vegetable plants and two flowers that dried up, everything else is still holding up.

We got our first rain in almost two weeks on Tuesday.

Good luck. Hopefully you get some milder temps than we've had. Seeds germinate best in 55-75 range, which is why people usually reseed in the spring or fall.

To the bolded: That's a LOT of water. Especially for seed. I think you're going to drown/rot the majority, especially if it's shaded as you say. You really just want to keep the top of the soil damp until the majority of your seed sprouts.

Do you water in the morning or at night? Fungus usually comes from watering at night or watering too frequently.

I was thinking it was too early for grub damage, but I know it is the right time to out down grub control anyway. I haven't had to water much yet due to rain but when I do it starts early in the morning, around 4:30 am

I always thought that until I became a homeowner too.
I enjoy it, though. It's my 'Zen' time. I was outside for a good three hours today mowing, edging, weeding the beds, etc. Just pop the headphones in and zone out.

If I could get to just maintenance, I'd be fine and totally do the same. I just struggle with getting a whole lawn. It's like whack-a-mole.

    Re: Lawncare/Landscape Thread

My front lawn (I posted a pic here a week or two ago) was about 50% dirt when I bought my house 2 years ago. The rest was boston ivy, creeping charlie, crabgrass, clover and a bunch of other shit like sedges, plantains etc. I never bought sod or paid anyone to do anything. Just lots of manual labor. So the front is mostly maintenance.

The back is whole other animal. I'm currently waging war on bamboo, Japanese knotweed and poison ivy. None of which are very easy to get rid of.

That might be it. Heavy thatch can promote fungus. Or these fuckers, which will also turn your grass brown:

In most regions you won't start seeing the damage from grubs until late summer/early fall. Normally around August and September.

You are correct, this is the time to apply grub control because the grubs are still too young to start feeding (on the roots of your lawn). Kill em before they can do any damage

Well my grub control will also take care of chinch bugs, if that doesn't clear it up I'll try a fungicide. Based on what I'm seeing, I think I may have an issue with both. Luckily, it's not severe so my lawn still looks pretty mint.

That's a good grub control to put down. Chinch bugs can absolutely decimate a lawn, more so than grubs if not taken care of
Depending on what you're weather has been like it is prime season for fungus. What exactly are you seeing? Just general browning out?

Are there any super lazy ass ways to cultivate a better lawn over time?

Like could I just develop a system where I manually sprinkle some super fertile soil for like 2 minutes each day in random parts of the yard and call it good?

I had this start to take over. No way to kill just it so I had to hit it with roundup and replant.

It has some name the guy told me.

    Yes.

Hire a guy. Mine comes every other week for $30. I fertilize 2x a year, that he does for free.

If no rain, water the front 3x a week and back 2x a week. Adjust accordingly if there is rain.

The first picture you posted looks like "leaf spot" which is not a huge deal and is quite common.. Could also be Fusarium Blight which is a bigger problem. If the areas start to spread or form larger circles that is major cause for concern.

A lot of the tougher fungus issues are in fact soil born fungus so round up and replant doesn't always fix the issue. It's important to have a regular/proper fertilizing schedule as well as proper watering

I definitely fertilize regularly, mostly with Milorganite. I have an irrigation system that I use when the rainfall isn't sufficient (usually in the Summer months).
