Re: Rick and Morty (tv show)

It was a little difficult to follow at times so I planned on watching again tonight. I did enjoy it though, was nice to see some of the old themes and characters popup even if it wasn't a true story line.

Cum gutters is fucking hilarious

I immediately tried to access the Story Train website after the ep and was extremely disappointed to learn that it wasn't legit.

Thought that was a great episode. Love them getting meta and talking about it during the process, then bringing it all back to being a fake reality stuck inside of a toy train

I didn't follow very well, probably will have to rewatch. I wasn't even sure we were "out of it" at the end with the toy train

The point I think was that they were real copies of the multiverse reality, so likely some real hints in there, sticking evil morty in there was definitely a wink to a future showdown.

Mr Poopybutthole as Emperor Palpatine had me fucking dead.

Rewatched it last night and it made much more sense on the rewatch.

I think the "real" reality was at the end and inside the train was another vignette. Also, pretty sure them referencing the Evil Morty storyline was their way of saying it's done. Rick made some comment about not having to go down that road anymore. Reddit was saying that they think it's the writers way of saying to let it go.

I cant buy that whatsoever. Theyve been dropping cryptic hints about him in multiple seasons. I find it hard to assume they would just completely drop that storyline without explaining where evil morty came from.

I took the "no need to revisit that" as more of a joke because of the amount of teasing theyve done on it.

They certainly could just never go back to it because they have no rules, but I just dont see that being the way they approach it, especially with still like 60 more episodes to write at minimum.

Rewatched and yeah I can see what you guys are saying about them just never going back to it after that. They definitely purposefully wrote themselves an out in that episode. They might not even know themselves, and thats probably part of the point, they dont want to write themselves into a corner.

I've re-watched it several times now, and the line that keeps standing out the most is "We don't have to do anything, Morty. This is just a structural guide. We're obviously going to impart our own style."

Maybe they'll revisit the Evil Morty storyline, maybe not. This show is all about subverting expectations. They don't owe us anything.

While I'd love for them to explore the Evil Morty storyline that doesn't seem like they're style to do something so linear. They're very episodic. And I can see them playing out the entire series then end it with some grand master plan of Evil Morty. Who knows. But the way I read it in my rewatch was that they were getting out of finishing it.

This one is on pace to be the weakest for me, unless the final three episodes really slap

Caught up on the latest episodes. Story train was a trip. Was difficult to get my arms around it, but I loved how they poked fun at Dan Harmon's story circle concept. Something he swears by for all stories.

I would be shocked if they drop evil Morty all together. Although I do think they might lean more South Park than Bo Jack in terms of gag of the week vs linear character arcs.

I listen to a podcast that breaks down the episodes, they brought up a good point about the family/emotional element kinda has felt missing in a lot of this season's episodes. A lot of these have been single standalone type eps, which is fine, but I think thats a big reason why this season is probably the weakest of the four.

It seems like this season has them taking aim direct at themselves and CN/AS in terms of their sudden popularity, marketability, and high demand for new content. It's like they're taking a break from pushing the overall narrative while they're in the middle of this super disjointed period of the show where they had to renegotiate their deal.

Yeah this is actually something they discussed as well. They did a lot of writing about avoiding getting caught in fan service or writing themselves into a corner. Even is this week's ep Rick says something like "You know how many episodes we couldve gotten out of purge planet? We dont do sequels, its called integrity."
I do love when the get meta like that, but there is a point where you start doing it too much. Its like 'ok we get it, you dont want to do that, but just shut up about it and write different stuff then'.

That feeling is probably more fresh because of the recent train ep, but I hope they keep that to a minimum for a bit.

I think the rest of this season will be more of the same of R&M bitching and complaining while also inching closer to "classic rick and Morty hijinks"

I'm hoping that's the case at least. I'd love for them to go back towards where they left season 3 when the family came back together and bonded against Rick. That's was a fascinating wrinkle that was sort of overlooked.

This has easily been the worst season for me so far. Not that it's been bad by any means but the vibe/dynamic/whatever you want to call it just feels off. I agree they've leaned a little too heavily into the meta aspects. Little winks and nods like the Purge planet joke mentioned above are always fun, but I think collectively it's gotten a bit out of hand. I actually really enjoyed this last episode even though it felt a bit lower stakes because it was just a more straight forward and fun R&M adventure. They do the incredibly complicated and zany stuff well but sometimes it just feels unnecessarily overdone.

Haven't watched the latest R&M yet

Has anyone checked out Solar Opposites? It's Roiland with one of the R&M writers

I wrapped it up this morning. I enjoyed it. A bit of a lighter touch, generally speaking, than R&M, but identical animation
