Yeah this is actually something they discussed as well. They did a lot of writing about avoiding getting caught in fan service or writing themselves into a corner. Even is this week's ep Rick says something like "You know how many episodes we couldve gotten out of purge planet? We dont do sequels, its called integrity."
I do love when the get meta like that, but there is a point where you start doing it too much. Its like 'ok we get it, you dont want to do that, but just shut up about it and write different stuff then'.
That feeling is probably more fresh because of the recent train ep, but I hope they keep that to a minimum for a bit.
