I feel like more of a court jester for doing it. Hit my mark though. The rest is gravy.

12 Hour Shift was a fun time. Angela Bettis is great. Hell, the whole thing was well cast.

Jingle Jangle, we enjoyed it...kinda combined Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Peter Pan, and generational redemption/forgiveness. Great cast, very cool visuals, and decent tunes for a musical...not that they'll get listened to again.

My wife and I starting watching this last night and finished it earlier in the day...rather good for the genre. This is one of first times I recall seeing Aubrey Plaza play a "normal" realistic character, which was rather weird. I thought Stewart was rather good, but I think she's long been underrated with a certain amount of the disdain she's received being based in the weird internet jealousy over being the center of the Twilight love triangle. A lot of folks decided to judge her based on this one series and not her overall career.

anyone see Hillbilly Elegy yet? The reviews make it sound like its pretty terrible and transparent oscar bait. I have a personal connection to one of the main actors so I'm interested in how it turned out but haven't seen it yet

I don't think it's as bad as critics made it out to be, but it's still bad nonetheless. Just your run-of-the-mill poverty porn that thinks anyone can improve their station in life by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

Was very very turned off by the trailer. Poverty porn is a good word.

i don't really understand the outrage for the movie. i mean, the internet is really, really heated about this one

some say it's offensive to those from the Appalachians? to me, it was more about his personal upbringing with a very mentally ill mother. it's based on his memoir (i haven't read it)

all of the anger reminds me of the controversy for American Dirt

i think a lot of it centers around the politics of the book, which was completely left out of the movie

All of the criticism I've heard is that its just a very shallow, one dimensional oscar grab attempt

I just watched the movie. Have no idea why there would be outrage over the movie or why it would be described as poverty porn. It's based on a memoir. I have no idea what the politics thing is.

It was an alright movie. I didn't find it to be bad like many of the reviews, but I also wasn't blown away and it was a pretty formulaic "come from nothing" story, albeit well acted.

    Thought Young JD was great.

hillbilly elegy (the book) was basically just “this is our fault and only we can bring ourselves out of it”, which completely ignores the idea that effective policy could really help a lot of people. but the government’s neglect of families in the Appalachia region makes people think it’s their own fault and that the government can’t help them or only enables poor decisions.

frankly it’s a very shitty worldview to have about your common people.

I can understand that point. I'm all for social reform and providing support to impoverished families. But I guess I'm still missing why it would cause an uproar here. Like does dude specifically address policy in the book and say it's a bad idea?

Otherwise it's just kind of a weird thing to harp on. This is one guy's memoir. Who is anyone to say that "this is our fault and only we can bring ourselves out of it" wasn't the case?

his memoir is marketed as the voice of those in the Appalachian region, and he disappointingly mentions virtually no policy or other meaningful ideas in it.

there’s no question his story is amazing & worthy of being told, and obviously no single person’s story can apply to all.

but he has a shitty view of his people. I can’t say I have much interest in checking out the movie.

American Fable is a thoughtfui story about childhood naivete slowly being chipped away, but not developing into cynicism. A person's essential nature isn't always the things they do.

Thought Tolkien was really good. They weaved in his influences without hitting you over the head with it. There was no 'that's why he called them orcs' moment.
