It's always weird to hear people that love phish say they don't like a song for bad lyrics, even if it has great music.

Phish has never been noted for their lyrics, many times Dave has. That's the difference here.

What he said. You dont listen to phish for lyrics, you listen for music.

And theres a difference with a dmb because they are all a more normal song structure. You cant ignore bad lyrics when theyre repeated over and over like DS. It drags the song down. Not to mention, with dmb, dave's voice is a key instrument.

Trying and writing bad lyrics can hurt a song. Writing great music and throwing some nonsensical lyrics at the end or beginning doesnt hurt it nearly to the same level.

There are some incredible exceptions (Dylan, obviously), but if you're listening to music other than hip hop for the lyrics, I think you're doing it wrong.

    that isnt true at all.

Most of DMB's catalog that is considered good has incredible lyrics... its one of the biggest things that drew me into the band.

For me, the main reason to listen to music is the music — the instruments, the arrangements, the composition, harmony, melody, etc.

Bad lyrics can turn me off to a song or an artist, but I can abide some average/mediocre lyrics if you're doing interesting stuff with your music.

I think rap is an exception to that because lyrics are so essential to the art form.

I understand this and am mostly joking, I get that people go to Phish shows to see Jams and people go to DMB shows to see songs.

That being said, it's funny to me to think of someone turning off DS because of the lyrics and start jamming to, well, pretty much any Phish song with lyrics.

Shit, I was going to try and not engage in this thread anymore but now we're talking Phish, too. I'm hooked, here we go.

Even in much of Phish's nonsense, there is purpose. Much of it is thoughtful and pushes the songs theme forward. They essentially have a ghostwriter for their lyrics..and you think it's just nonsense?

Side note..one thing that has always made me DMB >Phish, is that Dave, even with the Shake Me's and Cornbreads weighing him down is an artist in full...lyrically, musically, hell he even draws the album artwork now. That's more than honorable..it gives him a leg up on the Dead, too IMO. It differentiates him and the band from those two. And he'll keep that leg up in my book, so long as he continues to write with purpose

Not really understanding the people who say the lyrics are bad and were written without much thought. I think there's a lot of poetic vibes throughout

And man, people love to simplify LIOG and use it as an example of whimsical writing all because of the "splish, splash" line...but that lyric has a point to it that directly relates to the songs overall message..IMO "splish, splash" is a brilliant little line that conveys the feeling of innocence and connection to the natural world when "walking by the water". It is not meant to be taken literally, as taking a bath.

That same feeling of wonder about nature and taking on the world is expressed uniquely in the first verse, I don't see a tired trope there unless you're speaking about "legs hanging free".

And then, "I can't believe that we would lie in our graves.." ties the whole thing together..our connection to the natural world, are ability to seize the day as it is, our remorse if we don't. It all fits nicely together.

Do You Remember is just a bunch of jumbled, half baked cliches about childhood that comes off cheesy.

Sorry to rant..Graves is one of my favorite things the band has done. I won't let it be compared to this haha
I mostly agree with this. While I like the new song more than others debuted last tour, it's not something I would listen to on a regular basis. I just can't see it compared to LIOG, a song whose lyrics and the band's instrumentals are paired perfectly to convey the content and tone of the song.

Farmaid is copyright claiming the full show videos so if you want to watch, looks like you will have to manually jump from song to song. Good news is Farmaid uploaded what looks to be every song from D&T's set in 1080p.
