Re: Netflix Instant Watch Recommendations Thread

We watched Altered Carbon last week. Surprised it didn't get good reviews. Stylistically and conceptually a very cool series. Some of the dialogue and story was a little cliche, but it made for a solid 10 hours of entertainment. I feel like the rules of the universe could lend itself to very interesting storytelling in future seasons.

If you haven't seen "Welcome to Leith" yet, you should check it out. It's a similar story but on a smaller scale about a group of white supremacists that try to take over Leith, North Dakota. I assume i watched it on Netflix but that was about a year ago so i'm not sure it's still there.

I'm halfway through Seven Seconds and enjoying it. Pretty predictable so far, but well done. A little bit of Training Day meets Law and Order.

Also really enjoyed Altered Carbon. The visuals were spectacular and I really like the lead actor. Could definitely see anthology type stories in the same universe going forward.

Training Day is on my watch list on Netflix. Amazingly, i've never seen it.

Everyone should watch S1 of Big Mouth. I don't even really like Nick Kroll but I thought it was perfect.

so you're 3.5 seconds into it?

I liked the visuals more than the story for Altered Carbon. There was also a shit ton of full frontal that I didn't see coming... er phrasing.

it also bugged me that he could understand everyone 250 years later b/c if you dropped someone from 1768 into today they wouldn't understand a word we said - language changes so much. They made the time gap too long.

anyone have thoughts on Santa Clarita Diet? I didn't think I'd like it much. S1 was ok, but I'm finding S2 to be hilarious. Its the right amount of campy, and it plays to it

Started watching this because of your post. I am also not a fan of Nick Kroll, but the show is outstanding and hilarious. Really captures the absurdness of puberty and somehow even while it is pushing lines left and right, it stays in the lines.

I had put this question in the general movie thread but nobody really bit, I guess it's more appropriate in here anyway.

I've been experiencing over the last few days a lagging when watching Netflix content (no matter what it is), when I start it's always fine, but over time the audio and video get to be out of sync with each other, enough to be very annoying. I can pause, refresh the page, and it's okay to start again but winds up syncing out again.

    anyone else having this issue?

What device does this happen on? It happens once in a while on our 'cheap' Samsung smart TV my fiancee's dad got at Costco or something but not on our smaller non-smart TV we use with a Roku.

    Evil Genius was really good.

Another True Crime Docuseries, but one of the better ones I've seen. I recognized the beginning of the story a little, but a lot of other crazy stuff going on. Highly recommend. Only 4 episodes which I liked as well.

If you want more and have Prime there is a fairly lengthy documentary called the Guru about the Bhagwan and the whole thing that’s worth watching.

    Owl theory all day.

Apparently this one is similar to Making a Murderer where they left out a lot of evidence that was bad for him.

Based on what we saw I fully agree he got railroaded.

The Staircase was a gigantic waste of time.

Look up all the stuff they left out and I guarantee the "railroaded" label will fade away pretty quickly.

What exactly points to him being guilty? Everything here seems very circumstantial and minor compared to the actual evidence (or lack there of)

That list doesn't change my mind too much. The shoe print on the back of her sweatpants and the time of death/dried blood are more concerning to me.

It's definitely biased in favor of the defense.

That said, I strongly disliked the prosecutors and appreciated that 15 years later or so the Judge said he would have handled a lot of the admitted evidence in a different way.

Overall I think it's an interesting look inside a complicated criminal case most people wouldn't otherwise see.

He didn't get a fair trial, which is a fact, and was prosecuted in a city where shady shit has gone down from a legal standpoint before for political reasons (hey Mike Nifong!)

That and there's zero evidence pointing towards him killing his wife.

Duane Deaver sure was a piece of shit. How many other people did he falsely put behind bars?

I don’t think either the prosecution or defense knows what happened. I think if he beat her there would be evidence but there wasn’t.

    The judge screwed up, agreed.

I found him extremely unlikable too.

And the documentary could have used some serious editing.

I agree that from a legal perspective he did not receive a fair trial and that the judge also made a few baffling evidentiary rulings.

That being said the stuff they left out pokes holes in the defense's arguments and leaves less room for reasonable doubt in the eyes of a jury, IMO.

    Like?

What was left out that pokes holes in what specific defense argument?
