I agree with this take. In Vide Noir’s defense, I never anticipated it to equal Strange Trails. That album is one of my all-time favorites and there was about a 4-5 month period where it was pretty much all I listened to. The time it came into my life I was able to relate to it on a deeply personal level.

I am anxious to give Vide Noir more listens. I definitely think it could grow into a great album over time.

I’m not the biggest J. Cole fan but I thought it started strong, fell apart in the middle, and then ended strong. Not bad but not great.

Yeah, I've never liked a full album from him. He's got a couple great songs though (i.e. No Role Modelz, Power Trip). Really don't like his "no features" gimmick. He's not interesting enough to hold my attention for an entire project.

ugh, I've become resigned to the fact that I'm just never going to really love a full j. cole project. for some reason, I continually see potential for him to put out a truly great album, but it just never materializes.

there are parts of his new record that I really like (KOD, Brackets), but some of his hooks and singing is borderline cringeworthy. his production work largely remains uninteresting and just sounds empty and dated sometimes. someone on twitter put it perfectly last week - this album is the kroger version of to pimp a butterfly. and I hate to compare it to kendrick because kendrick is unbelievable, but kendrick is doing what cole thinks he's doing. and he's just leaps and bounds ahead of cole in every way imaginable.

I don't really listen to j cole's music, but any time a discussion of him comes up I think about this bit from an article by shea serrano:

    Quote:
    J. Cole as a rapper is like if one of those paint-by-numbers things were a human. He’s like if a pair of Sketchers had come to life. He’s like if one of those braided leather belts became sentient. He’s like the last 30 minutes of a comedy movie where they try to get all serious but mostly just end up saying a bunch of regular-ass stuff. J. Cole does not rap in a good way, or an interesting way, or a challenging way, or a way that exists in any manner other than what it is presented as. If J. Cole wants to make a song about, say, riding a bicycle, he will call it "Bicyclez" and there will be lines in it like, "I always wanted a bike when I was a kid / Never got one / I got one now / Just rode 5 miles on it / Cole!" If J. Cole wants to make a song about the hardships of growing up in the underclass, he will call it "Hardship" and there will be lines in it like, "When you don’t have money / Life is hard / I have money now / Still can’t cover up the scars." That’s what he does. And it’s not good.

yeah that is absolutely spot on. is that the article where he and another writer took a stance on if j. cole is good or not? I remember reading that awhile back.

more than anything, J. Cole is plain boring.
