Re: Official The Wire Thread

I almost feel like Season 2 should have been Season 1. It sets the stage for the final 3 seasons, and provides a lot of context for the first season.

I'm starting to watch Season 2 again, off the bat it isn't nearly as good as Season 1, imo. Ziggy is too annoying and unlikeable for me, especially during the first few episodes, when the stage is being set.

I like Season 2 a lot more than everyone else it seems. Probably because my dad grew up in Locust Point and his entire family still lives there. My grandmother actually lives on the street where they filmed the old lady trying to get the gangsters off her porch. You could throw a stone from her stoop and hit the Domino Sugar plant.

I think it's very good, but it's a very radical departure from Season 1, which confuses a lot of people and runs them off.

I think that was the idea. Hell, the creators even said each season is a theme and they wanted to show different sides of the city.

Season 1 was the drug war, Season 2 was the end of the working class, Season 3 is politics, Season 4 education, and Season 5 the role of media in today's world.

Its not like Season 2 dropped any of the threads from Season 1.

Each season had it's theme, but at it's core the show was driven by who wore the "crown". Season 2 veers away from that for several episodes before linking everything together. I just think if some of the people intorduced in Season 2 had been introduced in some way during Season 1 then the beginning of Season 2 would have clicked with more people.

It's so fucking hard to talk about this show with spoilers, but I think eveeryone who has seen the show will understand what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It was very non-traditional storytelling in the way they went from Season 1 to Season 2. Most serialized dramas, you would expect to pick up where you left off with the same characters, but in Season 2 you were given an entirely new plot and you had to wait and see how the characters you already knew fit in to the new storyline.

And I think we should be able to talk spoilers in here, anyone who hasn't seen the show yet but doesn't want to be spoiled shouldn't be going in here.

One of the best lines in Season 2 from Sobotka towards the end of the season....this isn't exact but

"You know what the problem is? We used to make shit in this country, now we just put our hand in the next guy's pocket."

I love the line from Season 2:
"The Greek will be angry. "
"It's bussiness, so they Greek will be smart."

It's such a contrast to all the other jokers on both sides of the law, in government, and media in the series who would not handle things that way.

I have no clue. I bet HBO puts up the rest of the Season 2 episodes in April. That's usually how they do things.

I enjoyed season 2. All of the new characters were refreshing. Zig, Nico, Frank...they were all interesting. And it really, really comes together during the second half.

Having seen the entirety of both series, I will say that The Wire has the edge simply because it ended before some of the main cast left or the stories became a little too soap-opery.

But the first 4 seasons of Homicide rival anything from The Wire.
