Awesome '98 DMB story from Relix

Didn't see this posted, correct me if I'm wrong, but this was an incredibly enjoyable short story to read.

yep someone posted it in the "Random DMB thoughts..." thread already.

Cool read, it's kinda funny to see them using the AAA trip-tychs (sp?) and pay phones

I actually needed to use one the other day (went to a job exam, couldn't bring my phone), and there were none at the train station. Had to borrow someone else's phone to make a call.

Re: Awesome '98 DMB story from Relix

1998 was the year I became a super fan. I got Live at Red Rocks in Christmas 1997 all because I liked the songs Two Step and Crash (which I mistakenly thought was on L@RR) and it took off from there. I remember checking DMBML and a smaller site called Tripping Billies for info.

I remember when DDTW was played on the radio and someone uploaded to a website. Then a week or so later, Crush was leaked. The weekend before BTCS release, radio stations aired a special about the album and played a few songs off of it.

I also remember when they released the tour dates and people freaked out about the stadium dates. People were calling them sell outs.

I also remember people disliking the album. Saying they played too many songs from BTCS each night, etc.

Good times. I will forever cherish that year and a few years after that. I miss being that "in love" with something. Thanks for sharing the link.

With complaints on the band with Boyd leaving, not knowing if there will be a violin player, pessimistic views of an album we haven't heard yet and some people not even wanting new music and the band not being the same etc. etc. yadda yadda. It is the trips themselves that makes me keep going to shows (a little part still song chasing and love for live shows). But from my first DMB road trip 11 hours to the Chicago Caravan after graduating High school and the yearly Saratoga Trip, to Mexico. It is all still worth it. And why I also keep getting excited for every tour. Memories with my best friends and family instead of worrying about the "the band not being what they were 20 years ago"

Well said. My favorite trips ever are based around the DMB/D&T shows that I've traveled to. So many great memories and friends that have been made.

Yep. The peak-DMB nostalgia in the story is amazing but so is the premise that spur of the moment travel creates amazing memories. That's what it's all about and what makes me so thankful I found a love for live music.

God damn, the nostalgia this story brings...

Makes me think of a trip I took with a buddy from university, when we drove from Lawrence, Kansas to the Gorge, with tickets, a tent, sleeping bags and some bread. We left on Wednesday, slept at a friend's place in Missoula, then carried on to the camp grounds at the Gorge, the shows, then back to Lawrence - almost 3,000 miles in 5 days.

Unfortunately, no shows this side anytime soon, if ever.

My story is nowhere near as awesome as the Twitter poster's but here's some pics of my ticket and related stuff from the day.

This was my senior year in high school. I remember waiting in line outside of the Blockbuster in the mall so we could buy our tickets. I remember caravan-ing to the concert with friends and getting separated and then hoping we'd meet up again. No cell phones so no way to call each other. Luckily we did find each other. I do remember crossing that bridge (in the newspaper pic) to get to the concert. I swear I think we walked but one of my friends said she thinks we took the bus once we parked. I remember the rain and the mud. At one point we all had a tarp (no idea where it came from) covering us and security made us get rid of it. We were about halfway between the soundboard and the stage. I remember everyone crowd surfing and losing my 15 year old brother to said crowd surfing. He made it all the way up to the stage and was was pushed back by security. I remember dancing and singing and just having an amazing time. And I remember the crowd singing the last line of So Much to Say in the E2 and then it was over.
