Re: Carter Beauford

2002 were the 18 and 17" k dark medium thin crashes. I think they were brilliant versions when Zildjian redesigned them.

Also used 14" k dark thin, 14' zxt trash former, 18" a custom, and 20" oriental crash of doom.

Maybe to kick start this again... what are all the hihat combos we know he's used over the years?

13" Z Dyno Beat on top, K top hat (on bottom)
Same as above with K Custom top hat on bottom
    13" A Custom
    13" A Custom Projection
    14" New Beats

Having trouble with more off the top of my head...

    Re: Carter Beauford

As much as I love the current kit, I've come to realize that I much prefer the 02/03 setup. I really miss watching him use the crash of doom, trashformer, and the 4 front splashes. Also have started to miss that projection ride.

That kit just had something magical. I love the current setup as well, but Carter has simplified a lot of his drumming now and it's mostly alllllllll China cymbal. He requested those extra splashes in place of the 15" crash and he never touches them. You can't hear those little cymbals over Tim and the horns either. Just very interesting.

I've had every iteration of the kit over the years, and it's what got me in touch with Henry, but I think I may end up going back to the older setup.

Or else keep it until they retire then definitely will have the old kit.

Yeah, I’ve been saying that for a decade now.
You can thank the Rockapalooza that Timmy brought to the band in 08 for that.

I just think all the old equipment he had would actually work better now. Projection ride to cut through. Bigger splashes over these little ones. Big crash of doom for accents. Maybe he gets bored and Henry just changes it up.

Also miss the timbale on his right side. He hardly touches it other than gravedigger now

How about the gear in his Music Masters video? Is his front left crash a K Custom? I did find out if you see a K under a Zildjian it may be from 2003 instead of an EAK.

That crash has always been a regular k other than the Armand years. Usually an 18, but 20 in the early days.

    Re: Carter Beauford

Started the move back to the 2002 kit. Still a ways to go, but I really do prefer this setup of all of his. The location of everything, plus the additions that are now gone, just make this kit the best in my opinion.

It's interesting watching him play nowadays verses then. Seems nowadays its all rock feel with the china's constantly being smashed. Like mentioned above, I think that's all due to Tim, but he was bashing that thing like crazy when he added it in 06 and 07 and they just had Butch.

The timbale placement I really like in the old spot. Carter hardly ever uses it now and it used to be a staple in his playing. Hardly any other drummer incorporated a timbale like he did on a regular kit. The 10" snare in that position he hardly ever touches.

Progress.... 1st Pic is the current 2018 kit. Will post more once it's completed.

There’s a notable difference between his China use during the Butch years and during the Tim years. Significant increase with Tim.

I would never call his timbale use a staple of his playing. It certainly was used during JTR consistently and into the Salsa Jam in Warehouse but I wouldn’t call his timbale use “groundbreaking” or a “staple” of his sound.

i knot a drummer and I don’t know much about drumming here’s my take on carter.

The dude has always been great. Let that be clear. With that said, I felt over the last several years (pre 2018 ) he was overplaying a bit. Now since buddy has joined I feel like he’s playing with more dynamics again. The Deer Creek two step slolo is a good example. It just felt his older solos back in the early to mid 2000s. It was more dynamic then his straight up fast rock solos he was doing for a while. I just really like the way he’s playing this year and it seems like he’s moving back to a more jazzy drummer. Maybe not the best terminoligy, but that’s the best I can explain it.

Also I’m enjoying his tone a lot more this year. My favorite tone of his is that early to mid 00s tone, but his current tone sounds damn good to me.

He's definitely playing much softer now. The other night I watched them play Do you remember and during the verses, it's like there almost weren't any drums in the song. He's calmed down a ton from 2016 that's for sure.

Dude will always be my favorite drummer. Would love to just say a quick hello one show. I was set up to meet him at the Arkansas show this year but he simply told their manager, who contacted me out of nowhere, that he didn't have time and needed to focus on the songs. Sucked big time, but maybe next year. Not holding my breath though.

I wouldn’t hold my breath. I have a friend that’s a Yamaha artist, artist with other brands too, in some hall of fames, etc. (so a legit percussion name). Anyway, he tried multiple times to get a meet through Yamaha and Pro-Mark (at the time) to no avail. If a fellow Yamaha artist isn’t getting a meet, your chances don’t look to hot.

There’s a 18” Zildjian Classic China for sale on Reverb.. thinking of snagging it. Didn’t Carter use this?

If I wanted to replicate his current snare sound what would you suggest? I know that he has been using the Alex Van Halen signature snare as of late but those are near impossible to get. Would the ludwig black beauty still be the closest?

14x6.5 Gretsch Rosewood. I had one before I got my Tama reissue and it sounds nearly identical. Highly recommended those
