More like not gonna happen, in real life, this year. Only virtual.

Curious to see how the other big dominos fall after this announcement.

Hoping to run my 10k tomorrow morning. Weather is supposed to be low 70s and sunny. Technically I ran it last weekend but I wasn't pleased with my time. It was high 80s and super humid and I was running on an unfamiliar course that turned out to be super hilly. I mapped out a new 3 mile course (running it twice) on my bike last week and ran thru it Monday. It was significantly easier than the last course. I'm hoping the combo of the two will make this a much better run.

Fingers crossed my calf will let me get through this. I've been rehabbing it pretty aggressively all week. Already told my PT she's gonna be hearing from me next week

ya, i'd say no races for the rest of 2020.and if there's another wave during flu season, maybe no big races until until fall 2021

i ended up deferring my big sur entry to 2022, starting to feel more confident that this was the right decision

I pretty much run exclusively by heart rate now. Pace is 100% secondary except when I do speed runs.

Did my 10K! First 10K since 2018 that I've done without stopping to walk. My time was about ~1min less on my avg mile. I'd like to get it under 10 min but to not stop running the entire time was a big win for me.

I really figured out pacing today. My lungs caught fire around mile 2 and I unintentionally eased back and realized I could catch my breath. It was awesome. Completely changed my entire run.

My feeling on races, whenever they come back, and those that choose to participate will determined on the comfort level for runners. There is really no one-size-flts-all scenario, even with contract tracing, expanding testing, a vaccine and/or if some type of face covering is mandatory. It really boils down to are the participants comfortable in that environment.

My thoughts on any large scale event, like the NYC Marathon, will offer a myriad of options for runners, if any of them goes forward. Some runners will be fine and run, others will prefer to defer to later dates, other might want a refund and try again later.

Laura, your choice on deferment for Big Sur to 2022 I think shows that exact idea at play. Every runner/person will have a a varying level of comfort and only that person can make the choice/decision that works best for them. The key will be if races offer enough options to runners and stay around to honor those options.

Very nice! How did you feel in the days after? Been able to ride/build on this run in your training?

Some soreness but overall felt pretty good. Went for a short run about 3 days later and all my pain returned. I haven't run since. My PT is going to check it out next week but I fear I'm gonna be looking at some time off again.

Fortunately, I got a bike and have been tearing up the roads with that. Nearly 30 miles this last week alone.

Sounds like up and down with the pain returning. What did the PT end up advising?

On a brighter note, I think I have finally found my groove again. Took some much needed time in April to rest up, then that leaked into May. Did a few speed workouts during the week, nice easy paced run and a long-ish run on the weekend. All seems to be coming together again, or at least I do not feel like I am running through molasses anymore.

She said since we're friends at this point she'd stop by after work one day to look at it and give me a recommendation. She's going to dry needle it as well. If she thinks it's more than that one session she's going to tell me what to say when I go to the doctor so I can get an order for more PT.

Anyone have a good treadmill recommendation? I don’t want to break the bank but realize this is an investment and something I will hopefully have/use often for many years.

So that was almost 2 months ago. Since this post, I am now at the point where I'm running 3-5 miles every day at a 11-13 minute mile pace. Another 25 lbs down brings me to 55 lbs since the beginning of the year. 255 -> 200. My resting heart rate, which was in the late 80's early 90's BPM in December is now 40...This Apple Watch and running have absolutely added years to my life. Hoping to get down to 185 lbs by the end of the summer (I'm 5"10). It's insane how fast the body can change. I couldn't jog 10 minutes straight 3 months ago and now I have had days were I go 50-60 straight minutes jogging without stopping.

Damn! That is an 8 mile per day average to get that done. Bravo! Do you have the next virtual race picked out? After the leg feels better, of course.

You can keep going to 1000 miles if you want by 8/31. I'm mentally exhausted of trying to keep up. To be fair also that was running and walking. Probably a 70/30 split.

You don't keep a spreadsheet of your mileage that is color coded for what pair of shoes you were wearing, keeps a tally for each month, what's you're on pace for the year, and a rolling total for the previous 12 months?

I weight trained all winter. Had to end it early Bc of covid. I started running again i think in eary may. Have my weekly long-run up to 9 miles and I’m trying to run just about every other day anyway 4-6 miles. Again one day per week is reserved for 9ish miles. I’m hitting the point where my paces are shit and my legs are dead. I think it’s just heat

But my last two runs around the perimeter of Central Park, I notice the unevenness of the sidewalks really affects the top/dorsal aspect of my left foot. Any ideas how to help it along other than rest?

ya summer running is a different game, humidity and higher temps will slow you down. don’t get caught up with hitting a pace

uneven road/sidewalk can increase injury risk. since you are starting to notice a little pain, id immediately switch up the route. so you aren’t putting that stress on your body for every run

also do ankle exercises. make the alphabet with your foot every morning

I know that area/place you are running on, Justin, and Laura's recommendation of ankle exercises is spot on. Really any type of lower leg strength and stability will be very helpful, even when not running on the uneven pavement. Running is a single-leg sport, so making sure we are evenly balanced and supported on each leg is key to injury prevention.

Heat and humidity is brutal. I'd taken some recovery time (and I've been enjoying biking) and went back out for the first time in about a month this morning. Good lord, it wasn't even that hot yet, probably in the mid-80s, and I was dripping sweat after 3 miles. Really glad I didn't wait until this afternoon to go

Anyone try to follow the 80/20 rule? Supposedly you can run faster by training slower. Basically you want 80% of your running to be "easy" aka in the aerobic zone and 20% to be "hard" or "moderately hard" aka in the threshold or maximum zone. This allows your body more time to recover and you get more benefit from the speed work you actually do.

For me, that means doing my easy runs with a heart rate below 149.

I'm trying it out mainly because I want to keep injuries down. I did 7 on Sunday and man it's hard to keep the heart rate below 149 in the heat. I ended up still in the threshold zone for like 50% of the run.

I did 3.5 this morning and I was able to stay almost 100% below 149. I'm doing like 9:45 miles now whereas before I'd probably be doing 8:45 miles.

Here's the book I'm reading on it: https://www.amazon.com/80-20-Running.../dp/B00IIVFAEY
