My feeling on races, whenever they come back, and those that choose to participate will determined on the comfort level for runners. There is really no one-size-flts-all scenario, even with contract tracing, expanding testing, a vaccine and/or if some type of face covering is mandatory. It really boils down to are the participants comfortable in that environment.
My thoughts on any large scale event, like the NYC Marathon, will offer a myriad of options for runners, if any of them goes forward. Some runners will be fine and run, others will prefer to defer to later dates, other might want a refund and try again later.
Laura, your choice on deferment for Big Sur to 2022 I think shows that exact idea at play. Every runner/person will have a a varying level of comfort and only that person can make the choice/decision that works best for them. The key will be if races offer enough options to runners and stay around to honor those options.
